Two lead developers at IO Interactive have responded to worries that their upcoming game, *007 First Light*, is just a re-branded version of their *Hitman* series. While gameplay footage shows influences from various games, some players have wondered if the new James Bond title is essentially the same as *Hitman*, but with a different character skin.
IO Interactive first announced *Project 007* back in 2020, which immediately excited fans of *James Bond*. The last game adaptation, *007 Legends* from Activision in 2012, hadn’t been very successful, so people were eager for a new installment. IO Interactive is well known for the popular *Hitman* series, and their experience with stealth action seemed like a great fit for the *James Bond* franchise. Now that *Project 007* has been officially named *007 First Light*, the response to the upcoming game has been overwhelmingly positive.
IO Interactive “Never Even Considered” Reskinning Hitman into 007 First Light
Some people have suggested that *007 First Light* might just be a re-skinned version of the *Hitman* games, pointing out the similarities in gameplay like disguises, stealth, and open level design. However, Rasmus Poulsen, the art director for *007 First Light*, recently stated in an interview that IO Interactive never considered such a shortcut. He emphasized that the team is aiming for something much more ambitious and unique for the *Bond* franchise, wanting to create a broader and more creatively driven experience than anything they’ve done before. They aren’t simply taking *Hitman* and changing the surface details.

I was reading an interview with Theuns Smit, a producer on the new 007 game, *First Light*, and it sounds like the game has really evolved. He basically said that IO Interactive has grown a lot since they first announced it, and all the new people they’ve brought on board have given them a fresh perspective and skills. It’s still got that IO Interactive feel – you’ll definitely recognize the stealth and how you can interact with the world like in *Hitman* – but they’re really trying to do something different with *First Light*, changing up the overall design and creative direction.

Though *007 First Light* shares familiar *Hitman* features like blending in with crowds, using disguises, and creating diversions, it also adds improvements such as more realistic gunplay, dramatic action sequences, and a stronger storyline – aspects that weren’t emphasized in the *Hitman* games. A major new feature in *007 First Light* is driving vehicles, something you couldn’t do in previous IO Interactive titles.
