Summary
- 007 First Light will lack multiplayer, contrary to most of the highest-rated James Bond video games ever made.
- The upcoming title will instead aim to tap into IO Interactive’s single-player expertise.
- 007 First Light will feature the youngest James Bond yet and take place in “kind of a modern day.”
007 First Light will not include multiplayer mode, a characteristic that has been a hallmark in some exceptional James Bond games. This decision underscores IO Interactive’s proficiency and design aesthetics, qualities that have made 007 First Light a game designed for solo play only.
Back in late 2020, IO Interactive initially revealed their James Bond game under the codename Project 007. Fast forward nearly five years, and during the Summer Game Fest held in June 2025, the Danish studio finally unveiled the official 007 First Light.
With the debut of the SGF 2025 announcement trailer, the game became available for purchase on all significant digital marketplaces, verifying IO Interactive’s earlier suggestions that 007 First Light would be a standalone player adventure. The omission of multiplayer functionality represents a significant shift in the James Bond video game series, as multiple top-rated installments have included it to some extent.
IOI Sees 007 First Light As a History-Making Opportunity
As a passionate gamer, I had the pleasure of chatting with Stephen Totillo from Game File, where IOI Global Marketing Director Jonathan Lacaille shared his excitement about 007 First Light. He described it as an incredible chance to etch our names in gaming history by finally bringing a new James Bond game after such a long hiatus. This ambitious goal was one of the reasons he decided to leave Ubisoft subsidiary Massive Entertainment, where he worked until early 2021. For context, the last time we saw a James Bond video game was with the critically panned 007 Legends in 2012 – a first-person shooter developed by British studio Eurocom, which unfortunately marked their final project before they faced financial difficulties.
Looking at its roots, the James Bond gaming series produced several timeless hits such as GoldenEye (1997), Everything Or Nothing (2003), and The World Is Not Enough (2000). Despite the fact that their enduring fan bases can be attributed to their chaotic, addictive split-screen modes, multiplayer wasn’t a forte of IO Interactive. Instead, their latest self-developed game with multiplayer, Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days (2010), took the backseat. In contrast, the upcoming 007 First Light intends to capitalize on IO Interactive’s expertise in single-player experiences, as stated by Game File’s Lacaille, “We want people to remember this game, not just the one from before.
007 First Light Features the Youngest James Bond Yet
As a fervent admirer, I can confirm that the recent Summer Game Fest trailer hints at IOI’s ambitious production, slated for release in 2026. The enigmatic identity of the actor portraying James Bond in “007 First Light” remains a secret, as per the words of Lacaille, who emphasizes that they want the game to capture our hearts first before revealing this detail. Intriguingly, “007 First Light” introduces the youngest James Bond yet, a 26-year-old agent still on his way to earning his license to kill. However, he’s expected to leave quite an impact with the number of foes he encounters throughout the game, as Lacaille hinted during his Game File interview, without specifying a particular year, suggesting a modern-day setting for the narrative.
