9. Conan Exiles
Conquer The Exiled Lands
The Conan the Barbarian series is predominantly recognized for several average films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger from the past, with other Conan-related content generally appealing to a more specialized audience.
Instead, Funcom sought to transform this by employing the franchise to craft an extraordinary open-world survival sandbox rich in history and mystery. Needless to say, they achieved this admirably.

This game can be challenging to start playing because of its complex mechanics and abundant expansion packs and additional content. However, once you’re in, it’s clear that the effort put into mastering it is well worth it, as this overlooked survival title is genuinely exceptional.
8. Greedfall
Looks Can Be Deceiving
Although Spyder’s games appear visually dated compared to more recent titles, their action role-playing game offerings are enjoyable once you can look past the graphics. They consistently deliver fun ARPG experiences.
Just like many other games, Greedfall doesn’t disappoint, providing a captivating rural backdrop, action-packed and diverse battles, and a vast open world brimming with engaging activities.
It has elements reminiscent of Dragon Age and Assassin’s Creed, though it doesn’t quite reach the peaks they set, it still manages to pay a commendable homage.
Judging from initial feedback during early access, it appears that Greedfall 2 may encounter similar problems as its predecessor. However, just like the first game, if it proves to be an engaging and enjoyable experience overall, many players might choose to overlook its rough edges.
7. Ghostwire Tokyo
The Demon In Me
Maybe it’s the trend of Ubisoft-style open-world games that some found off-putting in Ghostwire Tokyo, or maybe it was the bizarre elements and unique style from its creator, Shinji Mikami. Regardless of the reason, if you skipped this game, you missed out on something special.
This game offers stunning graphics that draw you into a fantastical, otherworldly version of Tokyo filled with captivating tales and missions. It also boasts one of the most sophisticated magic-focused battle mechanics from its time.
The storyline in Ghostwire Tokyo has a surreal, somewhat puzzling quality, but beyond that, it’s an outstanding open-world game. Essentially, if you break it down, it follows the familiar pattern of completing various tasks marked on the map, which is common in many games.
Despite being widely known for good reasons, this particular example stands out as exceptionally unique. Even if you’re feeling burned out by open-world games, this one could still be an exciting change of pace to explore.
6. The Witness
Puzzling On Your Terms
Speaking of timeless puzzle games, it’s hard to find ones as remarkable as The Witness when compared to classics like Tetris or Portal.
In terms of iconic puzzle games, only a handful can rival the exceptional quality and brilliance of The Witness, even alongside gaming greats such as Tetris or Portal.
Because each puzzle is so intricate and challenging, it can be quite simple to become too engrossed in the puzzle creation and overlook the fact that this game is set in an open world.
Players have the liberty to traverse the island at their own pace and interact with puzzles as they see fit, enabling them to abandon a puzzle they’re finding difficult, advance along another route, and revisit it later with a clearer perspective.
Johnathan Blow’s games are incredibly enjoyable to play due to their emphasis on emergent gameplay. While The Talos Principle was also worthy of mention in this regard, we believe that The Witness stands as their masterpiece.

The concept of ‘Pokemon with guns’ appeared rather shallow at first glance. However, after giving it a try myself, I was ready to acknowledge my initial misgivings were unfounded.
In simple terms, Palworld is a game that provides a massive, open-survival environment where players can construct their bases, ally with others, and employ these allies in combat and exploration of the larger world. With various mounts, base-construction options, and hidden mysteries to uncover, this game will undoubtedly keep you engrossed for countless hours.
Additionally, since the game is still in Early Access, it implies that frequent updates continue to be released. This constant flow of updates provides a compelling reason to revisit this delightful Pokemon adversary.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can confidently say that this unnamed game surpasses any Pokemon title released by Game Freak in recent memory – quite astonishingly, it’s a Pokemon-less adventure. However, until the legal matters are resolved and the courts make their decision, we eagerly await the appearance of our beloved pocket monsters.
4. Sleeping Dogs
Don’t Let Sleeping Dogs Lie
I can’t resist open-world action games that remind me of Grand Theft Auto. From quirky titles like Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip to serious competitors such as Saints Row, I find them all quite appealing. However, Sleeping Dogs stands out among the rest and could even be considered one of the best, if not the very best in this category.
This action game strikes a delightful balance between Grand Theft Auto, Yakuza, and True Crime, emphasizing hand-to-hand martial arts as its main battle style to distinguish itself from others in the genre. However, it doesn’t skimp on mini-games, engaging missions, and open-world exploration – elements that fans of GTA will appreciate.
Moreover, the storyline centers around the gritty, hidden corners of Hong Kong, where you assume the role of a covert police officer, and it’s absolutely captivating.
This game, often referred to as an underappreciated gem, might not be quite so undervalued now, given its widespread recognition. Yet, it seems to have a smaller audience than it deserves. If you’re a fan of Grand Theft Auto and are looking for something similar, this could make an excellent substitute.
3. Dying Light
Shoot ‘Em In The Head
Initially, when Dying Light was released, most people were already tired of the numerous zombie-themed media flooding the market. Consequently, not many were particularly excited about another zombie-centric game gaining popularity.
However, the extraordinary achievement of Dying Light is even more impressive given that it dared to take significant risks to distinguish itself. And oh, did it manage to grab our attention!
Playing this game, thanks to its innovative day-night cycle, offered some of the most pulse-pounding gaming experiences you could dream of. The setting and storyline were brimming with exciting instances, while the parkour-centric movement felt incredibly rewarding.
Initially, there were areas where it seemed a bit off-balance, and the style of writing wasn’t always engaging. However, overall, Dying Light stands as a contemporary zombie game that demonstrates that even when overused in storytelling, zombies remain a significant and enduring concept.
2. No Man’s Sky
The Ultimate Comeback Story
Initially marketed as one of the most highly anticipated games ever, it’s understandable to think No Man’s Sky is a top-tier AAA production. However, contrary to popular belief, it started as an AA game, heavily supported by Sony and mainstream media. This could explain why its initial release was met with such disappointment.
After some time, No Man’s Sky managed to restore its tarnished image and truly live up to its potential. Now, this game isn’t just the largest open-world adventure out there. It’s got depth too – a rich universe brimming with fascinating discoveries and immersive experiences that keep me hooked.
In a nutshell, No Man’s Sky offers exciting discovery, base creation, item fabrication, multiplayer elements, and plenty more, making it the sprawling space odyssey we’ve been longing for nearly a decade.
Though it might be a bit lean or raw for certain players, and others may still bear the scars from early disappointments, I strongly recommend giving it another try. This game is an outstanding space adventure that more than justifies the cost of entry.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m eagerly anticipating Avowed, but it remains to be seen if it will truly challenge the Elder Scrolls franchise. However, there’s no denying that Obsidian has made an indelible impact on the Fallout series.
