10 Amazing Co-Op Games That Will Hook You From the Start

I mostly prefer playing games by myself, but I always enjoy a great co-op experience. Some of my best gaming memories come from playing with others when I was younger.

One of the best things about gaming is sharing it with friends and family – it’s a special experience, whether they’re seasoned players or completely new to games.

As a big fan of playing games with friends, I’ve noticed something: not all co-op experiences are the same. Some games take a long time to finish together, others really test your skills, and then there are those that are just meant to be fun and relaxing – and honestly, I love all kinds!

So, to highlight games that are instantly enjoyable when played with others, here’s a list of ten fantastic co-op games that are fun right from the beginning.

10. Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel

Thoughtless Gunfire

The Army of Two games are a huge part of my childhood. I played them all with a close friend, and we both think Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel is the best one.

The franchise doesn’t focus on a strong story, prioritizing action instead. However, it succeeds in providing thrilling, fast-paced fun with its well-executed shooting gameplay.

Honestly, this game really shines when you play with a friend. There are tons of awesome moments that need teamwork, and it’s just as fun when things go wrong and you can playfully rag on your buddy for messing up!

While not a lengthy or groundbreaking game with a complex story, Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel is consistently enjoyable from start to finish.

9. Elden Ring Nightreign

An Extremely Powerful Base

I’ve often mentioned Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree when discussing my worries about the game’s development, but I want to acknowledge its strengths. It deserves praise where it’s earned.

Despite constantly finding things to critique, I ended up playing the game for 30 hours in just a few days. It’s surprisingly addictive, building on the strong gameplay mechanics established by Elden Ring.

Playing alone was really difficult, but the game became much more enjoyable with friends. The large-scale challenges and especially the unique final bosses made it a great experience, and it was nice that the bosses weren’t just repeats from older games.

While it might not be the best roguelike, and honestly, it’s debatable whether it’s even a good co-op game when you really look at it, if you and your friends love games like Elden Ring and other Soulsborne titles, you’re almost guaranteed to have a lot of fun with Nightreign.

8. It Takes Two

The Hazelight Formula Doesn’t Fail

Hazelight, the studio behind the popular game Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, has consistently believed that if something works well, there’s no need to change it – a philosophy they’ve followed from their first release right through to their latest game, Split Fiction.

For this list, I think It Takes Two is their best game. Its original story is deeply touching, and the gameplay makes that emotional connection even stronger.

The game’s levels are imaginative, and the gameplay is even more innovative. Each section feels fresh and exciting, constantly delivering a thrilling, fast-paced experience.

Instead of slowing down, the game steadily builds to an amazing finale, though it might feel a little long at times. It Takes Two is easily one of the best co-op games ever made, and it’s consistently fun to play, starting with the very first level.

7. Wizard of Legend

Roguelikes Never Go Out of Style

I’m a big fan of roguelike games, so I’m always happy to recommend one. But Wizard of Legend truly stands out and deserves to be on any list.

This game lets you become a powerful wizard, able to control and combine all the elements. It’s a fantastic experience even when played solo, offering a huge variety of magical abilities.

Playing with one sorcerer is fun, but adding another dramatically increases the excitement. You’ll experience incredible moments filled with amazing magical powers as you battle tough enemies.

Wizard of Legend is a fantastic game that really gets what makes the action-roguelike genre so compelling. It’s exciting to first explore all the different abilities, and then even more satisfying to perfectly combine and use them.

6. Left 4 Dead 2

Your Favorite Co-Op’s Favorite Co-Op

Valve has a strong track record of creating successful multiplayer games, and has even pioneered entire genres with titles like Team Fortress 2 and, notably, Left 4 Dead 2.

Many developers have attempted to recreate the magic of this fantastic co-op game over the years, but nothing has quite measured up to its unique quality.

Even with the years passing and new games coming out, this zombie shooter remains one of the best co-op experiences available, and it still holds up incredibly well today.

Whether you play for a short while or a long time, Left 4 Dead 2 is incredibly fun when played with friends. It uniquely combines the excitement of first-person shooter games with the teamwork of cooperative gameplay, making for an unforgettable experience.

5. Absolum

A New Gold Standard for Beat ’em Ups

The video game world has seen many trends come and go, and even though beat ’em ups aren’t as popular as they once were, that didn’t stop the development of the fantastic game, Absolum.

The game captures the feel of classic beat-’em-ups like Streets of Rage and Final Fight thanks to its roguelike design, but updates the experience with modern polish and impressive visuals and sound.

Even though each new game doesn’t change drastically, playing with others adds a lot of variety. Combining different characters, powers, and abilities with a friend creates endless possibilities and keeps the game interesting for a long time.

Absolum is great for single-player experiences thanks to its defined start and finish, but it really shines when played with others. The game lets you and your friends unleash a relentless attack on enemies, keeping them down for a long time.

4. Overcooked! 2

The Ultimate Friend-Breaker

These days, the perfect evening with friends usually means settling in for the Lord of the Rings movies, or, if you’re looking for something more interactive, playing the chaotic cooking game, Overcooked! 2.

Few games manage to be both hilariously funny and intensely frustrating, making you want to laugh and scream at the same time. It’s this extreme emotional rollercoaster that really makes it stick with you.

The game throws increasingly bizarre challenges at you while you’re simply trying to make a basic recipe, turning each dish into a chaotic, yet hilarious, experience.

Overcooked! 2 is a blast no matter who you play with – whether they’re experienced gamers or total beginners. It’s designed for fun, and you’ll find it in hilarious moments, like struggling to cook while laughing or accidentally dropping food as the kitchen falls apart. It’s a truly sensational game.

3. Hunt: Showdown 1896

Merciless Extractions

I’ll admit, I generally enjoy the idea behind extraction shooter games. But I’m also truly captivated by Hunt: Showdown 1896.

Maybe it’s because I’ve been playing it since the very first test versions, or its uniquely scary mood, or simply that I’ve been waiting for something from Crytek for a long time and really want another Crysis game, but the gameplay in this title is truly fantastic.

The game features a huge range of weapons and challenging gameplay, but it’s never unfair. The graphics and sound really pull you in, and the levels and ways you can play are incredibly inventive. It’s a harsh world, but it gives you everything you need to stay engaged.

While it’s easier to pick up than some games, you’ll quickly know if Hunt: Showdown 1896 is for you. A couple of rounds are all it takes to realize it’s either fantastic or not your style. If it is fantastic… consider yourself a fan.

2. Cuphead

Run and Gun Mastery

Man, if you’re looking for a seriously tough but super satisfying game, Cuphead is amazing. It’s easily one of the best indie titles out there, and it’s even better when you play it with a friend. Seriously, it’s a blast!

Seriously, playing Cuphead, Mugman, and Ms. Chalice with a friend – especially if you jump into the DLC, which you absolutely should – is one of those experiences that really brings people together. It’s tough, you need to be super patient and work perfectly as a team, and honestly, it’s just incredible when you finally pull it off together. It’s a bonding experience I’ll never forget!

The game isn’t just filled with incredibly creative bosses; it’s a consistently exciting experience. This is thanks to its responsive controls, clever gameplay mechanics, beautiful visuals, and a memorable soundtrack that keeps you hooked.

Be prepared for a tough challenge – you might struggle for hours with Dr. Kahl’s Robot! But like the rest of us, and everyone who tries it, you’ll secretly love every frustrating moment of playing Cuphead. That’s just how the game is!

1. Monster Hunter Wilds

An Addictive Job from the Get-Go

When a game features epic battles against massive creatures – like a colossal, stone-skinned frog that attacks with its tongue – you know you’re in for something special, and that’s precisely how I felt playing Monster Hunter Wilds.

One of my best gaming memories of the last ten years has been joining my friends’ clan and sharing the excitement of hunting incredible and challenging creatures with them – learning about them and battling them together was truly special.

Capcom perfected the monster-hunting formula, starting with easy, quick bosses and culminating in incredibly challenging, lengthy battles like the hidden legendary dragon that requires a team and half an hour to defeat. It’s a level of polish that feels unmatched.

It’s a lot to take in at the beginning – there are so many classes, and the game’s interface and systems are complicated. But despite that, you’re driven by a strong desire to master everything and become a skilled hunter.

While you can definitely enjoy Monster Hunter Wilds on your own, it truly shines when played with at least one other person. It’s shaping up to be one of the best games of 2025, and you could easily spend years exploring everything it has to offer.
