Enthusiasts of role-playing games are typically well-aware that when presented with an option to perform actions that are deeply immoral or despicable, many gamers tend to seize the chance eagerly.
In the realm of video games, the repercussions of your decisions remain confined within the imaginary setting, thus absolving any real-world responsibility for misbehavior. However, it’s important to note that the decision to act morally or immorally is still admired.
Essentially, role-playing is about having the freedom to choose your actions, yet some games remove this liberty and compel you to perform abhorrent acts in order to advance the plot instead.
Ranging from heartrending scenes to shockingly violent acts, there’s a broad spectrum here. However, to reach the finale, you must confront and accept your own inner darkness.
We’ll focus on showcasing games that don’t permit avoidance of certain actions. This means we’ll exclude any instances where players must intentionally search for negative or harmful behaviors.
10. Untitled Goose Game
Causing Constant Mischief

Let’s begin with something casual, as things can get quite grim soon. The game Untitled Goose Game isn’t inherently dark, but it offers numerous opportunities for you to channel your mischievous side.
To advance in this game, explore a small village in Shropshire for a while, stirring up trouble wherever you go. Expect to damage objects, irritate villagers, frighten children, and much more along the way.
This goose doesn’t seem particularly menacing, but if you’ve ever thought a school bully was wicked, then you might get a similar vibe from this bird.
Instead of simply passing time in your pond, why not try out being a bit more playful, like a joyful goose?
Okay, savor this one because the rest of these entries aren’t quite as palatable.
9. It Takes Two
The Elephant Scene

As I dive back into the gaming world, I’m keeping things friendly and enjoyable for everyone. After all, playing It Takes Two is a fantastic family experience that brings laughter and bonding moments!
Yet, even though it’s a game centered around childhood amusement and fancifulness, it contains one specific sequence that requires you to carry out an extremely distressing and malevolent action.
As a miniature gamer version of myself, I came up with a not-so-smart plan to grab my child’s attention while in a shrunken state: I decided to ‘remodel’ her beloved elephant teddy, the absolute joy of her world. But the act of disassembling this cherished toy and letting it plummet to its doom was far from easy, given how much delight it brought to her life.
Without a doubt, apart from having a torn ear, the small teddy bear will likely be fine once you complete the game and it reverts to its regular size, enabling you to sew up its ear again. However, during this part of the game, it’s a particularly challenging scene to navigate.
8. Shadow of the Colossus
Killing The Colossi

Instead of immersing yourself in the thrilling journey of your video game character, battling through vast worlds according to the game’s instructions for maximum enjoyment, it might be worth pondering the reasons behind our actions within these digital realms and if they align with our personal values.
In Shadow of the Colossus, the character embarks on a journey upon being asked by Dormin, prompting them to kill the Colossi in order to resurrect something he’s lost. However, with each Colossus defeated, the consequences become more apparent.
Indeed, these colossal beings are generally peaceful, but any unprovoked aggression towards them results in a sorrowful demise that’s hard to bear. However, to complete the task at hand, active involvement is crucial.
Ultimately, it seems our actions led us to a sad ending, and perhaps this was the consequence we earned for bringing down such magnificent titans.
7. BioShock
Would You Kindly?

Discussing instinctive moves in video games, Bioshock might be the most renowned title that poses the challenging query and invites us to delve deeper into our thoughts.
In the role of Atlas’s pawn, we forcefully arrive at Rapture, descend using a Bathysphere into its depths, and ultimately aim to locate Andrew Ryan, the tyrannical leader of this crumbled paradise.
Yet, when confronting him directly, it becomes clear that we are a puppet soldier under the command of Frank Fontaine. Upon hearing the trigger phrase “would you kindly,” we are compelled to obey his every instruction without question – like grabbing a golf club and shattering Ryan’s jaw at his behest.
Afterwards, it is stated, ‘A man decides, a servant follows.’ Regardless of how much time you spend dawdling or procrastinating, eventually, you’ll find yourself confronted with the task of eliminating Rapture’s creator and acknowledging that you are bound by the creator’s intentions. It’s a beautifully crafted moment, and few plot developments can rival the emotional punch delivered by this one.
6. Papers, Please
Gatekeeping Arstotzka

At times, exhibiting evil actions in a game can stem from our basic human survival instincts – it’s a choice between them or us. This dynamic is precisely what unfolds when you take up the post at the Arstotzka border control, where you’ll find yourself confronted with the tough decision to carry out your duties, or face the same consequences as everyone else around you.
If you can consistently choose wisely and carry out your responsibilities diligently, you’ll earn enough money to provide for your family and ensure their safety. However, this may require denying entry to the country to innocent, desperate individuals, a decision that could potentially lead them to certain death.
Continue with the guidelines provided.
In other words, carry on with the steps or rules as directed.
Essentially, it’s impossible to help every person, and regardless of whether you take action or stand aside, there will be much responsibility on your shoulders.
5. The Last of Us Part 1
Denying The World Of A Cure

Playing through The Last of Us series has left me in a predicament, as I’ve found myself faced with numerous morally questionable and distasteful choices between the two games.
To be completely honest, there’s little room for debate when I reflect on Joel’s decision in the climax of the first game. It seems more like a ruthless, selfish act that leans towards the darker side of humanity.
In a situation where Joel must choose between giving up Ellie to obtain a cure for the cordyceps virus or saving her, he concludes that an individual’s well-being is more important than the collective and subsequently takes violent action to save Ellie from the Fireflies and their surgeons.
In one sense, his actions can be seen as the opposite of wickedness, for they are driven by love to rescue her. However, this act could also lead to a world overrun by zombies. Moreover, indiscriminately slaughtering everyone isn’t exactly a peaceful or diplomatic solution.
4. Grand Theft Auto V
Torturing Mr. K

As a gamer, I’ve witnessed some intense and disturbing scenes in many game series, even the critically acclaimed Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. However, nothing quite compares to the gruesome scene in Grand Theft Auto V that left me feeling uneasy and disturbed.
In the mission “By The Book,” you must acquire information from a man of Azerbaijani origin using whatever methods are necessary, as simply causing him a minor inconvenience won’t be enough to get the job done.
You’ll have to subject them to water torture, roughly pull at their flesh with pliers, and aggressively pry out a tooth while forcing prompts. This is intense, disturbing, and one of the most malevolent acts imaginable.
3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Bloody Baron Questline

Some games present situations where you’re stuck between two unpleasant options, essentially choosing your own brand of trouble. However, I believe CD Projekt Red stands out, particularly in The Witcher 3, due to the abundance and complexity of quests. In this case, I found myself drawn to the Bloody Baron’s tale.
In this mission, regardless of your choices, harm will inevitably be inflicted, and you will carry the responsibility for it. To simplify, your decisions may result in the loss of innocent children’s lives, the transformation of the Baron’s wife into a Water Hag, or both the Baron and his wife choosing to take their own lives.
While it’s true that nobody literally dies because of your direct actions. However, if you hadn’t intervened at all, no one would have perished either. Whether this outcome is preferable is debatable. Essentially, there are no good outcomes here, only tragic consequences, and more reasons for the public to dislike Witchers.
2. Spec Ops: The Line
The White Phosphorus

It’s time to move past the lighter topics. Let’s dive into the main subject. While Spec Ops: The Line appears as a standard shooter game from the 2000s, featuring a special ops mission in the Middle East and top-notch weaponry exclusive to elite military personnel, it differs significantly from many other games in its genre. Unlike most of these games, it aims to highlight the devastating realities of war.
Because of your PTSD and the turmoil from past wars, you find yourself making increasingly contentious choices, pursuing the specter of Konrad – a man who has been deceased for quite some time.
Or:
Your PTSD and memories of war are causing you to make more divisive decisions, as you continue to search for Konrad, a man who is no longer alive.
Both versions convey the original message in a natural, easy-to-understand manner while maintaining the intended tone.
The events lead up to the use of White Phosphorus, an action believed to eliminate danger and adversaries. However, it’s disclosed later that this operation resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians, a fact you approved. This chilling scene is deeply affecting and will linger in your memory even after the movie ends.
1. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
No Russian

I pointed out that certain passages would depict senseless cruelty and bloodshed, and among all, none is as appropriate for this description, and as contentious, as the level titled “No Russian.
In the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 game, the task at Moscow airport stands out as one of the briefest missions across the whole series. However, despite its brevity, this mission has an indelible effect that lingers long after completion.
Players will walk into the airport and will simply be told ‘Remember, No Russian’. Then, when stood before a bunch of innocent civilians, you and your squad will open fire on them, killing them in cold blood, and effectively making you complicit in an act of terrorism.
This task isn’t essential for game advancement, and it doesn’t require shooting. However, without experiencing it initially, you might miss out on it. Just being present in the room with the group of henchmen is sufficient for this contentious mission to make our list.
