The storyline in The Callisto Protocol might not live up to expectations, and at moments it seems like a less polished version of Dead Space. However, considering how amazing Dead Space is, anything that manages to approach its greatness should still be commendable.
In terms of The Callisto Protocol, these aspects align perfectly – the chilling horror, the tense atmosphere, the unsettling sound design, and the gruesome violence are all spot-on.
If you approach it without the expectation of another Isaac Clarke epic, you’ll discover that The Callisto Protocol offers a compelling replacement that definitely deserves your time to play.
8. Atomic Heart
Crispy Critters
Crispy critters, was this a game that didn’t get the love it perhaps deserved on launch, or what?
In simpler terms, Atomic Heart, like other AA games, found itself on a notorious bandwagon known as the “hype train.” Players had high expectations for it, believing that its Russian developers would create the next masterpiece akin to BioShock.
Instead, their experience seemed more aligned with the style of MachineGames’ Wolfenstein series, offering precision combat, a partially non-linear environment, captivating and bizarre key scenes, and a dash of campy action film flair.
The game does have some issues; for example, the open-world aspect can feel empty and challenging at times due to difficult boss battles from a technical standpoint, and the exploration doesn’t seem very rewarding. However, overall, Atomic Heart is an intriguing anomaly worth investigating, as it may just leave you pleasantly surprised.
7. The Darkness

In the realm of gaming, gritty crime stories are a common theme, with titles like the Mafia series, LA Noire, and numerous others exploring this terrain. Yet, it’s challenging to come across one that delves as deeply into the realms of darkness and depravity as The Darkness does.
Experience life as Jackie Estacado entails managing complex family affairs, surviving numerous assassination plots, navigating drug trafficking networks, and dealing with the abduction of your beloved childhood sweetheart, which barely touches upon the depths of your troubles.
However, here’s an intriguing twist: You hold the power to summon an ancient familial affliction that can unleash a destructive spirit, capable of causing widespread destruction and death in an instant. Yet, it falls upon you to determine whether this lethal potential is a boon or a burden instead.
This tale is remarkable, largely due to its foundation in an exceptionally witty comic book series. Additionally, the gameplay is thrilling and packed with action. If you’re interested in exploring your more sinister nature, I’d highly recommend giving it a go.
6. Stalker: Heart of Chornobyl

The STALKER series has maintained a devoted fanbase yet hasn’t quite broken into mainstream popularity. This is largely because of its challenging survival elements, authentic firearm gameplay, and immersive, eerie, disorienting atmosphere.

In a more casual and relatable manner, I find myself repeating this about the game quite frequently, but it still holds true – it’s the most fitting description for this particular title. Essentially, it offers an experience where you can master speedrunning speedrunning, if you enjoy pushing your limits and competing against your own past performances to save fractions of a second, then this game is perfect for you.
3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
He Didn’t Ask For This
Let me be straightforward with you: I won’t pull any punches here. In my honest opinion, the original Deus Ex takes the cake as the best game in the series – and there’s a significant gap between it and the rest. That said, don’t get me wrong; Human Revolution has its own unique brilliance too.
In the style of both an immersive role-playing game (RPG) like its predecessor and a contemporary first-person shooter (FPS), Human Revolution delivers refined gunfights, stealth sequences, and unique augmentations that elevate every interaction to an exciting experience.
By blending an enthralling setting, intriguing missions, and interactive gameplay decisions similar to its earlier versions, the result is a breathtaking display of gaming.
Adam Jensen might not have actively sought it out, yet it’s clear that we were the ones who desired it, and we indeed received more than we anticipated. The conclusion exhibits hints reminiscent of Mass Effect 3, offering its unique narrative, but if you can set aside those similarities, this is an exceptional cyberpunk saga.

As a gaming enthusiast, when we talk about classic shooter games, it’s hard not to immediately think of DOOM. After all, it’s the granddaddy of this genre and continues to make waves in the gaming world with its ongoing series.
Despite a revival in DOOM’s popularity, the boom-era shooter genre associated with AA (Indie) has flourished with numerous suitable substitutes. Titles like DUSK and CULTIC caught my attention, but ultimately, I chose Turbo Overkill as the boomer shooter inclusion for this compilation.
In this game, you’ll find yourself in a gritty, high-tech future setting riddled with decay – your play area. Your character is a swift-shooting, overly aggressive hero armed to the teeth like an entire military force. The movement and traversal mechanics are smooth and intuitive, ensuring that staying on the offensive is effortless.
This game offers unrelenting, raw combat and brutality that other shooter games for baby boomers can merely fantasize about. If you’re curious to imagine a Bladerunner scenario filled with more rocket explosions and chainsaw duels, Turbo Overkill is ready to give you an exciting glimpse of this violent spectacle.
