As a gaming enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in various digital worlds, I must say that Annapurna Interactive has truly outdone themselves with their diverse and thought-provoking catalog. From the breathtakingly beautiful “Journey” to the mind-bending exploration of “Outer Wilds”, each game offers a unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll.
Annapurna Interactive stands among the top independent game publishing companies, comparable to Devolver Digital in terms of the number of highly successful games they’ve assisted in releasing.
They’ve published everything from intense action platformers to story-focused walking simulators, and it’s almost always a banger game you’ll never forget.
Among all competitors in the industry, they stand out for having an exceptionally clean history, boasting a collection of groundbreaking, transformative events that have left lasting impacts. It sounds exciting to me to compile a list ranking their top experiences.
As a gamer, I rate these games based on my personal enjoyment and emotional impact they’ve left on me. Since these games have such a powerful ability to stir up emotions within me.
10. Storyteller
Twisting the Narrative
Instead of being a profound, life-altering work of art like many others, Storyteller is designed as a straightforward and distinctive puzzle game with a simple focus.
As I settled comfortably into my gaming chair, I found myself completely engrossed in the thrill of strategizing various methods to outwit and survive in this digital world, transforming me subtly but significantly along the way.
The entire gimmick is being presented with a simple prompt, some characters, and some scenes, and having to construct a narrative from those puzzle pieces.
This leads to the game being a little bit repetitive and short, but overall a really fun time, and especially nice for a relaxing puzzle game that’ll still work your brain.
9. Stray
The Cat Game
Although the initial scene was slightly disheartening, the game Stray won me over with its charming feline character, lovable robots, and captivating storyline.
The narrative primarily revolves around a robot called B-12, but in this game, you take on the role of a cat that merely watches the tale unfold from a detached viewpoint, striving to ascend back to the world above.
This game is somewhat of a unique blend, combining elements of platformers, climbing games, and cat simulations. It’s all wrapped up into a charming, cyberpunk-themed bundle that’s difficult not to find endearing just from its atmosphere alone.
The setting is rather brooding, and the ambiance is exceptionally captivating. Moreover, the story features an adorable cat character, which, despite certain noticeable imperfections, makes the narrative irresistibly endearing, and we wholeheartedly appreciate that.
8. What Remains of Edith Finch
This Bird Takes Off
The game “What Remains of Edith Finch” may lack depth in terms of gameplay, but its rich and moving story is a standout feature that deserves attention, offering a profound narrative experience.
The narrative is a loosely interconnected series of tales centered on a cursed clan, offering an immersive experience where the reader seems to be unraveling a hidden mystery, all while appreciating the strange and fascinating spectacles presented.
Discussing a game centered around narrative can be tricky without revealing too much, so let me just say that certain stories effectively resonate with players, whereas others may not quite hit the mark. However, on the whole, each story contributes significantly to a captivating experience, although it’s relatively brief in duration.
This engaging game offers a delightful exploration, filling you with joy as you discover every hidden detail within its virtual world, which is reminiscent of a walkthrough simulation. Despite my usual preference for intricate gameplay mechanics, it successfully captured my attention.
7. Cocoon
Somethin’ Buggin’ Ya?
Though primarily recognized online for snatching an award from Pizza Tower at The Game Awards, it’s essential to note that Cocoon is fundamentally a captivating puzzle game.
The game features adorable insects, spheres encompassing entire universes, and a system where you utilize these spheres to energize gadgets. This requires strategic resource management on your part.
As we delve deeper, it becomes astonishingly fascinating when layers upon layers of complexity unfold, such a skillfully crafted game leaves me gasping in awe each time I solve its puzzles.
Discovering solutions gives a great sense of fulfillment, and while it may seem simple and brief, it can be mind-boggling nonetheless.
6. Solar Ash
A More Radical Highway
Annapurna Studios, recognized for crafting highly artistic walking simulations and puzzles, have actually released just a couple of platformer games. However, these few entries stand out as among the finest in the platformer genre.
Personally, I find myself soaring above fluffy clouds, accelerating through the air, and gliding with an agility akin to that of Shadow the Hedgehog, even dabbling in some time-bending maneuvers!
As a gamer, I can’t help but be blown away by this game’s exhilarating gameplay and smooth movement mechanics. The visuals are mind-blowing too, with their vibrant cel-shaded style that pops like a comic book come to life – it’s a real feast for the eyes!
To top it all off, the boss fights against absolutely massive beasts that you climb Shadow of the Colossus style, and that’s just an incredible decision.
5. The Pathless
Absolute Schmovement
In simple terms, “The Pathless” is an open-world video game that offers a delightfully enjoyable method of movement, making it stand out and become one of my top choices among open-world games.
You’re always in motion, taking out objectives with your bow while sprinting and soaring from one significant landmark to another, rarely pausing when possible.
The visual and audio responses when you hit your targets are quite rich, providing a sense of immense depth, even with just a single button press.
Beyond its exceptional movement mechanics, it also offers functional puzzles, an eagle sidekick, and an outstanding soundtrack. This stands among the best archery games available, making it a must-play experience.
4. Lorelei and the Laser Eyes
More Writing than College
As a gamer, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes compelled me to dust off an old notebook I’d saved from college days. Any game that demands such real-life action is certifiably nuts – but in the most delightfully exhilarating way!
This is a detective-themed game set in a style reminiscent of film noir. You’ll be tackling intricate riddles that challenge your wit, keeping track of clues manually, and pondering various potential answers to solve the mysteries.
The tale is both mind-bendingly trippy and challenging to grasp, yet extraordinarily captivating, causing me to ponder everything about it.
The core experience often involves traversing the environment and employing the information you find to tackle puzzles. However, this process is skillfully designed for an engaging experience.
3. Neon White
“Annapurna Published This?”
Neon White, the unconventional gem in Annapurna’s collection, is a fast-paced action platformer that combines first-person shooting and deck-building, featuring an anime aesthetic and emphasizing speedrunning.
Playing this game offers an incredibly smooth experience, with you swiftly discarding cards for unique skills, while masterfully navigating platforms as if you were a divine being.
Among the few games that have truly stirred up my competitive instinct, this one stands out. Whenever I noticed my friends ahead of me on the scoreboard, an irresistible urge overtook me to beat their records.
It’s got cringe writing, sure, but let the cringe flow through you and fuel you, and you’ll find an incredible experience and a lesson in how to make a game feel awesome.
2. Journey
A Masterpiece, Together
Initially, the game “Journey” wasn’t released by Annapurna Interactive, but it was later published by them for the PC version. Since I usually play games on Steam regardless, in my book, it still counts as being published by Annapurna.
In this captivating adventure, you glide above the sandy expanses of the desert, hoping to encounter a companion along the way. Without uttering a single word, you share the breathtaking vistas with them, enjoying the journey side by side.
This game stirred a myriad of emotions within me, taking me through the desolate expanse of the desert, the terrifying depths beneath the earth, and the breathtaking climb up the mountain.
Everything seemed as if I was experiencing a profound sense of destiny, with immense power flowing through my persona and into me. It’s an extraordinary demonstration of visual aesthetics, auditory effects, and overall ambiance.
1. Outer Wilds
There’s More to Explore Here
Among all video games, Outer Wilds holds a special place for me, captivating me ever since I started playing it. I strongly feel that it stands out as one of the most exceptional representations of how video games can express artistry.
It’s hard for me to explain without spoiling it for those who haven’t experienced it yet, but let me tell you this: It has deeply moved me and shifted my perspective on life in a profound way.
For nearly my whole life, I’ve battled with depression. It wasn’t until five years ago that a game, Outer Wilds, stirred me to tears again. At the end of the game, it resonated deeply within me as I absorbed its profound impact.
It’s such a powerful, potent experience, where the exploration, music, and beautiful artistry on display all combine to make something so unique it can never be replicated. All I can do is urge you to play it.
