As someone who’s spent countless hours immersed in the fascinating world of board games, I must say that these digital adaptations are nothing short of remarkable! Each one offers a unique gaming experience, transporting us into captivating worlds filled with strategy, intrigue, and unparalleled fun.
When Nintendo introduced the Switch, it chose a distinct strategy compared to its rivals, opting for reduced overall power in favor of the device’s dual functionality as both a home console and portable system. One method they used to leverage this difference was by investing more in independent games and mobile titles, such as their Indie World Showcases.
That made app versions of board games a prime target for the system, and in recent years the Nintendo eShop has built up a respectable library of titles for those looking for a console alternative to the Steam library. Nintendo unfortunately does a pretty good job of burying its board games category deep in the eShop and behind a wall of Hasbro titles like Monopoly and Cluedo. But there are gems to be found for those willing to dig a little deeper and these are 10 of the best.
10 Charterstone
Grow The Town
- Publisher: Acram Digital
- Key Mechanics: Worker Placement, Legacy
As a devoted enthusiast, I can’t help but sing the praises of Stonemaier Games’ masterpiece, Charterstone, a sprawling legacy game that offers an arguably most captivating and distinctive board game experience on the Switch. Initially, it might appear as a straightforward worker placement game, but as the game unfolds, it transforms into a vibrant, living, and breathing world, making each playthrough an immersive adventure.
In contrast to being self-contained, the game of Charterstone is meant to be experienced as a series of connected sessions, where new elements are added to the world after each play. As you progress through multiple games, the goals adjust subtly, leading to an ever-changing landscape for players. This digital adaptation beautifully brings the vibrant characters and movements to life through colorful sprites and animation.
9 Mystic Vale
Restoring The Valley Of Life
- Publisher: Nomad Games
- Key Mechanics: Card Crafting, Push Your Luck
John D. Clair’s card crafting system, which the designer has refined numerous times, includes notable additions such as “Dead Reckoning“. This game is a fresh take on the widely played deckbuilding genre, allowing players to enhance their deck of 20 cards, granting new capabilities to them. By doing so, it significantly reduces the reliance on the luck that’s often characteristic of this genre.
The board game “Mystic Vale” offers a streamlined gaming experience. New cards either boost your buying power or grant points when later drawn and played. While the app interface could use some polishing, with multiple submenus and screens for information that should be readily accessible, it does eliminate the need for constant sleeving and unsleeving during each game. Additionally, expansions are available on the eShop, enhancing replay value.
8 Overboss
16-Bit Dungeon World Builder
- Publisher: Goblinz Studio
- Key Mechanics: Drafting, Tile Placement
In a brief timeframe preceding the game Cascadia, Overboss emerged, however, it was soon overshadowed by the multitude of releases in a year. The game world is that of Boss Monster in the 16-bit era, where players select a tile and token combination with the aim of strategically placing them on a grid for scoring. Although it’s more intricate and limiting compared to Cascadia, once you grasp the scoring system, you’ll discover cunning strategies.
Featuring 12 distinct tile types, each with unique scoring guidelines, and 11 character-specific scoring methods, this game offers numerous possibilities to create winning combinations. What’s appealing is that you can finish a solo game in just 10 minutes, making it an ideal choice for on-the-go gaming enthusiasts using the Nintendo Switch.
7 Sagrada
Stain Glass Windows
- Publisher: Dire Wolf Digital
- Key Mechanics: Dice Drafting, Pattern Building
This isn’t the final post about Dire Wolf Digital, as their digital division, a popular choice for premium board game apps, has been setting standards in the industry. Sagrada served as one of the initial milestones for this brand.
In simpler terms, participants alternate selecting colorful dice and inserting them into their church-like structures, often referred to as cathedral windows. Each die must be situated next to a previously placed die, making a sequence. However, each window has specific rules regarding placement, adding an extra layer of challenge to the puzzle. Players must utilize various tools or strategies to organize their windows effectively and aim for the highest scoring outcomes.
6 Istanbul
Race For Rubies
- Publisher: Acram Digital
- Key Mechanics: Worker Movement, Pick Up and Deliver
In the realm of board game app creation, another significant player, Acram Digital, offers the strategic title Istanbul. Here, players navigate a predefined grid using a group of workers, accumulating and bartering goods to become the first to amass five rubies. The strategy lies in meticulously planning each worker’s route for optimal efficiency as they are dropped off at various locations.
In simpler terms, the digital adaptation of Istanbul offers an intuitive way for advanced players to customize their setup quickly, even surpassing its board game version. Plus, it boasts a user-friendly interface ideal for larger console games, eliminating the need for scrolling or switching screens.
5 Raiders Of The North Sea
Plunder, Raid and Pillage
- Publisher: Dire Wolf Digital
- Key Mechanics: Worker Placement, Hand Management
The game that made Garphill Games well-known and is often considered the best in its critically praised series. Shem Phillips made a splash in the board gaming community with this unique twist on worker placement, where players put and retrieve one worker every turn.
Workers are assigned specific areas based on color, requiring players to think not only about their current move but also the options they’ll have during their next turn. The digital adaptation of the game is superb, but unfortunately, expansions, which many fans believe enhance the overall experience, haven’t been introduced for this version. Therefore, keep in mind that it’s limited to the base gameplay.
4 Everdell
Creature Comforts
- Publisher: Dire Wolf Digital
- Key Mechanics: Tableau Building, Worker Placement
Moving on to the crème de la crème, let’s discuss board games ranked among the top 40 of all time by Board Game Geek. One such game is Everdell, a unique blend of worker placement and engine building, enhanced by its charming cast of woodland characters.
Without repeating myself excessively, it’s great to see yet another impressive digital adaptation from Dire Wolf Digital. What could have been a complex interface to maneuver is surprisingly smooth and user-friendly. With 8 meadow cards, up to 8 cards in a player’s hand, and a maximum tableau of 15 cards, there’s quite a bit of data to display beyond the central worker placement area. However, the overall experience remains effortless and intuitive.
3 Wingspan
A Casual Afternoon’s Bird Watching
- Key Mechanics: Tableau Building, Engine Building
In simple terms, the popular modern hobby board game, “Wingspan,” is rapidly gaining popularity beyond the usual board game community and moving into mainstream markets. Regardless of whether you’re an experienced player or new to the world of board games, “Wingspan” offers a fun experience for everyone. If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s definitely worth giving a shot!
In terms of user interface, it falls short a bit digitally, necessitating extensive scrolling that overall makes it less smooth compared to its physical counterpart. However, it retains the same critically acclaimed gameplay and boasts two expansions that can be purchased on the Nintendo eShop.
2 Root
Woodland Might and Right
- Publisher: Dire Wolf Digital
- Key Mechanics: Area Control, Asymmetric Gameplay
The top two games on the list are not only highly acclaimed, but their digital counterparts enhance their accessibility. While Root is exceptional, as with all Cole Wehrle creations, its complexity can sometimes be a challenge, making it difficult for casual play.
In the game of Root, each faction has unique playstyles. To excel, you need to optimize your chosen faction’s performance while hindering others from doing the same. This requires not only mastery of your own faction but also a good understanding of all other factions at the table. The challenge lies in the complexity of these rules and the necessity of assembling 3-4 players who can play them effectively. Fortunately, the digital version offers an excellent tutorial for all factions, guiding you through each step, making gameplay and learning more accessible.
1 Gloomhaven
Tactical Combat In A Unique Fantasy World
- Publisher: Asmodee Digital
- Key Mechanics: Grid-based combat, story-driven campaign
On an ordinary day, you won’t find any other game occupying the top position on Board Game Geek except for either “Brass: Birmingham” or “Gloomhaven.” These two fan bases often engage in fierce competition, propelling their preferred games to the summit. This level of popularity showcases a high-caliber game selection, as these are massive dungeon crawls that many board gamers may be accustomed to experiencing in video games rather than traditional board games.
As a passionate enthusiast, I’ve noticed a surge in the popularity of expansive games, with Gloomhaven leading the charge. However, these games often struggle under the weight of their own complexity – an overwhelming number of rules, components, and setup requirements. But fear not, as the digital adaptation addresses this issue brilliantly! It streamlines the excessive content into a manageable format and takes care of all the maintenance tasks for you. The level of detail in the digital version is so impressive that it might be mistaken for a standalone turn-based fantasy RPG on its own merit. Even die-hard fans of games like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, who may have never dabbled in board games before, could lose themselves for countless hours in the strategic combat and immersive narrative layers.
