Initially, I found myself hesitant when I was introduced to the blend of Bullet Hell and Metroidvania genres. The tranquil pace of Metroidvanias has always been my preference, and I was skeptical about how the chaotic nature of Bullet Hell would fit in that setting.
Over time, my belief that this combination might succeed grew stronger. As a result, I chose to compile a list featuring top-tier Bullet Hell Metroidvania games.
To be honest, you won’t find a large number of games that combine these two genres extensively, with most of them leaning more towards Metroidvania with occasional elements of Bullet Hell. However, they are all enjoyable and creatively designed adventures.
Get your dodging boots ready, and let’s dive in.

A Robot Named Fight
Down With the Flesh!
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4 |
---|---|
Publisher | Morningstar Game Studio |
Genre | Metroidvania |
Release Date | September 7, 2017 |
Fight,” a versatile robot, offers a captivating blend. It’s part roguelike, part Metroidvania, and at times, it transforms into a Bullet Hell-like experience.
Occasionally it’s because you’re facing the minions of the Megabeast, but by acquiring the right enhancements, you can transform into a relentless force of Bullet Storm.
Among the super-dedicated managers who emulate the chaos of a classic Bullet Hell game are the White Wyrm, the Metal Patriarch, and the incredibly potent Megabeast Core.

Gestalt: Steam & Cinder
Steampunk Mayhem

Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One |
Publisher | Fireshine Games |
Genre | Metroidvania |
Release Date | July 16, 2024 |
In contrast to the previous game, which has a satisfactory amount of Bullet Hell elements, this upcoming game doesn’t follow the structure of a roguelike. This implies that none of its aspects, even the Bullet Hell bosses, are randomly generated or altered in any way.
As a gamer diving into the world of Gestalt: Steam & Cinder, I’m face-to-face with an enormous mechanical spider boss right off the bat. This colossal arachnid tosses pesky electrical orbs at me, making gameplay challenging and intense. But as the levels progress, the action gets absolutely wild! Bullet Hell unleashes some over-the-top, powerful shots that will put even the most skilled players to the test.
One option for a rephrased sentence could be: The enraged transformation of Indra manifests as him teleporting about and attacking you with laser blasts.
This version maintains the original’s sense of action, drama, and power, while using more straightforward language that may be easier to understand for a broader audience.
The major challenge lies with the final enemy, who not only assaults you using a colossal robot, but does it all while you’re evading shots coming from another direction.
Sadly, the intensity of the Bullet Storm isn’t perfectly balanced according to my preference, however, there are other more balanced instances on this compilation.
8.
Minoria
Witches and Heretics

Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One |
---|---|
Publisher | DANGEN Entertainment |
Genre | Metroidvania |
Release Date | August 27, 2019 |
If you’re familiar with the independent Metroidvania series known as Momodora, you may not have come across Minoria yet. Though it comes from the same creators, it’s more accurately described as a spiritual successor, and is published by DANGEN Entertainment.
Although the experience had its flaws, it offered an engaging tale that delved into witchcraft and religious themes, along with challenging boss fights heavily reliant on Bullet Hell gameplay mechanics.
As a gamer, I can’t forget my encounters with some epic characters like the initial boss, Blossoming Witch Lissette, and the plant-wielding terror, Witch Deity Saora.
Additionally, you’ll encounter a relentless fight against Harina, requiring you to weave your way past unstoppable balls of energy.
All truly challenging examples of what makes Bullet Hell so fulfilling, but also so intimidating.
7.
Absence of Light
I Hope You Love Bullets!

Platform | PC |
---|---|
Publisher | Koala Symphony Studios |
Genre | Bullet Hell Metroidvania |
Release Date | January 22, 2024 |
While the previous games predominantly combined elements of Metroidvania and Bullet Hell, Absence of Light reverses this format instead.
The game is mainly designed based on Bullet Hell dynamics, but it also includes elements for exploration and some fundamental Metroidvania interactions.
When confronting a boss, it becomes evident just how intense the bullet storm can be. Prepare for intricate, rapid-fire barrages of shots that require quick maneuvers to dodge.
Although the game becomes enjoyable once you grasp its mechanics, it can be disappointing that this particular adventure isn’t accessible across various platforms; it seems to be exclusive to personal computers.
6.
Islets
Iko’s Floating Islands

As a gamer, I can confidently say that Islets strikes the perfect balance between two beloved genres. It seamlessly combines classic Metroidvania exploration with challenging Bullet Hell-style boss fights, making it an unforgettable gaming experience!
Additionally, there are parts where you’ll glide through the skies in your makeshift aircraft, battling treacherous pirates as you advance.
Throughout your journey in the game, you’ll be connecting the drifting islands and unraveling a sinister conspiracy.
Among the most striking demonstrations of the game’s “Bullet Hell” essence are the bosses: Tomb of 1000 Spirits, Buried Beast, and The Stone Witch. This game offers a delightful blend of exploration and adventure.
5.
Laika: Aged Through Blood
Racing Into the Apocalypse

In the midst of this discussion of one crazy genre hybrid, enter another—the Motorvania.
This work titles itself “Laika: Aged Through Blood“, and indeed, that name seems quite apt for this post-apocalyptic journey.
One distinctive feature of this Metroidvania game is that it deviates from the typical pedestrian exploration. Instead, players will find themselves navigating the environment at high speed on a motorbike.
This setup offers distinct ways to fight, involving evasion of bullets while firing back from the air. It’s quite difficult, yet rewarding to try.
4.
Rabi-Ribi
The OG Bunnyvania

Based on what it represents – a remnant of an era where Japanese games often embraced their fanbase’s enthusiasm and whimsy – I should find Rabi-Ribi more appealing. However, for some reason, that’s not entirely the case.
It’s also a Metroidvania that goes wild in the boss battles, throwing streams of bullets your way.
In most cases, rabbits would struggle with such a scenario, but if we were talking about a rabbit turning into a human, that’s an entirely different tale.
Rather than listing all the supervisors, there are far too many to name. Remarkably, this game boasts over 40 of them, a truly astounding figure.
This Bullet Hell Metroidvania could rank higher if it weren’t so unevenly balanced. However, despite its imbalance, it’s still an enjoyable experience.
3.
Minishoot’ Adventures
The Surprise Challenger

I only became aware of “Minishoot’ Adventures” quite late. However, upon learning more about the game, I happily decided to add it to my collection.
As a diehard gamer, I’d liken the experience to stepping into an alternate universe where a classic Shoot ’em Up (Shmup) has been seamlessly blended with the top-down world design of the beloved The Legend of Zelda series. It might sound like an odd fusion at first glance, but trust me, it’s a captivating blend that truly works!
As you advance, you’ll encounter fresh Primal Powers that not only boost your abilities, but also unlock previously unexplored regions for you to delve into.
Similar to the game “Absence of Light“, it’s a fantastic title that could greatly improve its appeal by being available on gaming consoles.
2.
Touhou Luna Nights
Lovely Team Ladybug

Platform | PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One |
---|---|
Publisher | Playism, Active Gaming Media |
Genre | Metroidvania |
Release Date | February 25, 2019 |
The brilliant minds at Team Ladybug have provided us with numerous thrilling journeys throughout the years, ranging from “Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth” to “Drainus”, and most recently, “BLADECHIMERA”.
One exceptional title among them is “Touhou Luna Nights,” a Bullet Hell Metroidvania. If you’re not deeply acquainted with the Touhou universe, don’t let that deter you! This game offers an incredibly difficult and fashionable journey that’s well worth exploring.
Sakuya might seem like a regular maid, but she possesses an extraordinary skill – the power to manipulate time itself. This unique talent is crucial for her survival amidst the torrential barrage of bullets.
In Touhou Luna Nights, while there may not be many superiors, each one possesses an overwhelming strength that could potentially turn you into cinders. Oh, and by the way, you’ll even earn a reward if the projectiles brush against you.
A wonderful and hard Bullet Hell Metroidvania, but we’ve saved the best for last!
1.
The Knight Witch
Nighty Knight

This list likely wouldn’t have come into being without the influence of “The Knight Witch”. Therefore, it’s not overly surprising that it earned the first place award.
In this game, Metroidvania and Bullet Hell elements are seamlessly integrated across all aspects, including control schemes, twin-sticks, and the advancements that character Rayne will earn as you advance.
One particularly fascinating aspect of the game “The Knight Witch” lies in the way you construct a pack of enchanted cards, which grant you powers.
The main challenge is keeping everything running smoothly while dodging all sorts of mayhem.
Even though no one mentioned it would be simple, this game certainly lives up to the challenge of being a challenging blend of the Bullet Hell and Metroidvania genres, offering an exceptional gaming experience.
