It’s fair to say that the impact of the late, talented Akira Toriyama on popular culture is unmistakable and long-lasting.
Apart from creating games like Dragon Ball and Chrono Trigger, he also significantly contributed to the iconic character designs within the Dragon Quest series. This contribution has played a crucial role in making Dragon Quest one of the most cherished Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG) franchises ever.
The monsters of Dragon Quest, in particular, exemplify some of Toriyama’s very best work.
Toriyama’s creatures range from the traditional elements of fantasy to the downright peculiar, effortlessly blending charm and threat, while adding a touch of absurdity for added intrigue.
Among all the marvelous creatures that have appeared across the series, these ones in specific managed to truly capture ours.

Certain Dragon Quest monster types effectively maintain their distinctive, almost-cartoony charm reminiscent of the series, yet they exude an undeniable menace in a bold manner.
For example, let’s consider the unusual figure of a four-armed Zombie Gladiator. Without a doubt, it has a comical appearance with its snout resembling a pig, droopy eyes suggesting sluggishness, and an open mouth that seems to be wide awake.
Despite its comical appearance, its towering size and four distinctive weapons serve as a stark reminder that beneath the jest, it’s a true beast, ready to confront you.
This particular item often shows up as mini-bosses in certain Dragon Quest series because it’s quite formidable or challenging to defeat.
9 Bongo Drongo
A Genie And His Toothy Drum
Certainly, some of the enigmatic and supernaturally endowed characters created by Toriyama share distinct visual traits, like curved antennae situated atop their heads.
Dragon Ball’s Majin Buu serves as a great illustration, while we also observe it with the extraterrestrial character, Bongo Drongo.
First appearing in Dragon Quest 11, this character resembles a stout genie and hovers about carrying a gigantic, pulsating wooden drum affixed to its midsection.
In peaceful situations, Bongo Drongos and their descendants might occasionally entertain surrounding creatures by drumming energetically.
8 Weartiger

In the game Dungeons & Dragons, a character known as a Weretiger is someone who undergoes a transformation, turning them into a hybrid creature that resembles both a human and a tiger.
Dragon Quest’s Weartiger, however, is not that, at least not as far as we can tell.
A Weartiger is some manner of humanoid creature clad in tiger-striped feety pajamas.
Whether that’s an actual tiger pelt or just something this creature made for itself, we can’t say.
As a gamer, I can tell you, whether it’s a real beast or a mythical creature like a Weretiger, it brings out the same fierce intensity you’d find in a wild tiger on the hunt.
7 Sham Hatwitch
A Warthog In A Witch Hat
In the realm of traditional JRPGs, transforming an ordinary creature into something magical can be achieved in several creative ways.
This includes giving it wild, spiky hair or having its body crackle with magical energies.
The Sham Hatwitch, however, opts for a different concept: take a warthog and put a witch hat on it.
It’s rather brilliant in its simplicity, and no less magical than any other spellcaster you may encounter in a Dragon Quest game.
We do have to wonder who’s in charge here, though: the warthog or the hat.
6 Golem

The Golem is another mainstay of sword and sorcery settings.
Typically, a Golem is just an animated pile of nondescript stone or mud, raised from the ground.
Instead, consider this: You might find it fascinating that the creature known as Golem from Dragon Quest is constructed with an intricate setup of either stones or metal blocks.
Beyond just refining its appearance to appear more rugged and commanding, it also suggests a human touch, as if someone carefully placed each brick.
As Golems are usually man-made, this is a novel way to portray their creation.
5 Eggsoskeleton
Sunny Side Up
Not only does Toriyama excel at creating unique characters and fearsome beasts, but he’s also renowned for his talent in dreaming up extraordinary machines and vehicles.
You can see a lot of this kind of work in productions like Chrono Trigger and Sand Land.
A recurring theme Toriyama often explored was the design of bipedal robotic creatures, exemplified in Dragon Quest through the character known as Eggsoskeleton.
This mysterious egg-shaped mechanoid delivers powerful jumps and kicks with its spring-loaded legs.
In Dragon Quest 11, it was discovered that the object could be carved out, offering a handy mode of travel instead.
4 Dancing Devil
The Sweatpants Really Sell It
In many of Toriyama’s creations, you’ll often encounter classic depictions of devils and demons, characterized by their red skin, horns, tails, and other distinctive features.
This encompasses both grand, intimidating demons and small, unassuming ones. The Dancing Devil from Dragon Quest belongs to the second group.
These lively troublemakers leap and sway across the open space, persistently aiming to pull adversaries into sync with their dance beat.
Here’s a fun tidbit! Did you know that the original Japanese name for the Dancing Devil was “Bikkuri Satan,” which translates to “Surprise Satan”? Quite fitting, isn’t it? It’s always intriguing to learn about the origins of our favorite characters!
It’s quite unexpected if an ordinary person dressed in sweats, possibly resembling a mischievous spirit, were to invite you for a dance.
3 Killing Machine
Exactly What It Sounds Like
Toriyama often showed his affection for the Mobile Suit Gundam series by playfully referencing it in his comic work, while also adopting certain aspects of its mech design for his own monster creations.
One similarity you’ll notice with Dragon Quest’s Killing Machine is that it sports a glowing, ruby-red eye, much like the eyes on the Zaku mobile suits.
Instead of advanced weapons like guns and heat axes, the Killing Machine uses more straightforward tools such as a crossbow and a sword.
It’s still frighteningly efficient, though, bounding after prey with its four articulated legs.
2 Cannibox
The Original Gaming Mimic
In fantasy literature, the idea of “living predator chests,” often referred to as Mimics, has existed since the 1970s and beyond.
Nevertheless, it was the Cannibox character from Dragon Quest 3, first appearing in 1988, that truly convinced players about this concept within video games.
Another simple, yet effective design, the Cannibox looks like any old treasure chest.
As I reach for the mysterious box, I find myself taken aback when its lid transforms, revealing menacing teeth, glowing orbs that seem to be eyes, and an enormous tongue wagging out at me.
It’s the Cannibox that has given us a healthy skepticism of treasure chests in every JRPG since.
1 Slime
The Perfect Mascot
Crafting a mascot requires a unique skill. It should be straightforward enough for easy replication, but also instantly recognizable even in a quick glance.
The iconic blue Slime character, first appearing in the initial Dragon Quest game, is arguably one of the best-designed mascots ever conceived.
The unique outline of this object is defined by its rounded, tear-like structure, reminiscent of a droplet. Its small, insect-like eyes and bright red grin are straightforward enough to be easily replicated by a young artist.
Anyone moderately acquainted with Dragon Quest would easily recognize a Slime, making it an effective tool for marketing fresh games or generating various promotional merchandise in the real world.
