A fun and exciting video game known as “Shinobi Chronicles” or simply “The Shinobi Way.
For those among us who are more youthful, images of sleek figures, intense violence, and dramatic actions might spring to mind when considering modern video games. However, my older companions may find themselves visualizing various other aspects instead.
Recollections of meticulous jumping puzzles, grand narratives unfolding amidst pauses within gameplay, and the terrifying sensation of being snared aloft by a foe only to plummet downwards to destruction.
Since the Ninja Gaiden series has achieved such a legendary status, we thought it would be fitting to compile a collection of top games that capture the distinctive Ninja Gaiden flair. However, for this specific list, we will primarily focus on the original series, rather than the modern reinterpretation. So, buckle up for some 2D chaos, breathtaking aesthetics, and relentless combat!

Ninja Issen
Cyberpunk Ninja
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch |
---|---|
Publisher | CFK Co., Ltd. |
Genre | Platformer |
Release Date | November 22, 2023 |
As a die-hard fan, I’ve always enjoyed the blend of modern and ninja action in Ninja Gaiden. Yet, the gaming world is rich with future-set ninja games that truly captivate me. One such gem, which initially debuted on PC before finding its way to Nintendo Switch, is called Ninja Issen.
In contrast to its setting in a futuristic cyberpunk world, the game Ninja Issen shares many similarities with the character Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden. The protagonist, Kiba, is on a mission to clear his name, and what truly stands out is his proficiency in using the dangerous weapons of his ninja profession.
Apart from slicing enemies with a katana and throwing shurikens, Kiba possesses an additional skill – teleportation. By doing so, he can transport himself to the location where his trusted blade is thrown. This skill enables him to perform intricate and accurate jumps, maneuvers that would make Ryu envious.
Apart from occasional technical issues and a somewhat unengaging narrative, this game boasts challenging and formidable boss fights with multiple stages of difficulty. If not for these minor setbacks, it would truly shine as an exceptional ninja experience.

HAAK
A True Ninjavania

Platform | PC, mobile, Nintendo Switch |
---|---|
Publisher | OKJOY |
Genre | Metroidvania |
Release Date | August 24, 2022 |
You might not immediately associate the Metroidvania genre with Ninja Gaiden, but there’s nothing stopping these styles from blending together. In essence, many Metroidvanias are platform games that heavily emphasize exploration, which is quite similar to the movement and traversal mechanics found in Ninja Gaiden.
In the game HAAK, I find myself, an outsider, navigating through a foreign, post-apocalyptic landscape overrun by formidable robots. To fuel my inner ninja, the protagonist is equipped with moves such as grappling to distant locations, dashing swiftly, executing powerful charged attacks, and countering opponents effectively.
To put it simply, HAAK is an exceptionally great game across the board. However, when it comes to choosing the top game from this list, it won’t just be about having a thrilling ninja experience, but one that embodies the unique spirit of Ninja Gaiden in the most authentic way possible.

Shadow Blade: Reload
Kuro’s Quest

One aspect that “Shadow Blade: Reload” effectively conveys is the grim narrative style reminiscent of “Ninja Gaiden”. The game revolves around a breached pact, ruthless samurais, and a ninja named Kuro, who must restore balance to the world.
In this game, you have the opportunity to boldly color the city crimson, slicing a path through your adversaries while navigating dangerous obstacles. But keep in mind that stealth isn’t your only option – the game also presents tough encounters with numerous mechanical opponents as formidable bosses.
Additionally, it’s enjoyable to note that Shadow Blade: Reload incorporates secret locations and amplified difficulty across various game settings such as Hardcore. Plus, playing on Steam allows you to leverage the Workshop, enabling you to design your own levels and experiment with those crafted by others.

Strider (2014)
Assassin in a Dangerous Future

Platform | PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 |
---|---|
Publisher | Capcom |
Genre | Platformer |
Release Date | February 19, 2014 |
A famous ninja character that many recognize is Strider Hiryu, and although the series has been around for a while, the 2014 remake of “Strider” by Double Helix offered a particularly thrilling journey.
This game offers fast-paced battles against tough adversaries and menacing cybernetic hazards. Additionally, it presents the Cypher tactical system, allowing for multiple approaches in confronting enemies.
In simpler terms, what kept Strider from a higher position in this ranking was primarily the overall ease of the game compared to Ninja Gaiden. To fully honor its legacy, we require a game that is not only thematically consistent but also incredibly challenging.
6.
Super House of Dead Ninjas
Ninjas Gone Rogue

At first glance, “Super House of Dead Ninjas” might not appear to be overly similar to “Ninja Gaiden”. However, it shares some key elements: it’s quick-moving, incorporates roguelike gameplay dynamics, and challenges players with a strict time limit.
After overcoming all those obstacles, it becomes clear about the game – it’s exceptionally difficult, just as tough as playing Ninja Gaiden.
As an avid gamer, I’m absolutely thrilled about this game! It boasts a vibrant, eye-catching art style and packs quite the punch with numerous formidable bosses for the Crimson Ninja to vanquish. For those moments when you feel like you need a boost, there’s an abundance of power-ups at your disposal to even the odds!
Even then, only the most stubborn will make their way to the end of the grueling tower!
5.
Shadow of the Ninja: Reborn
Two Ninjas For the Price of One

Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | NatsumeAtari, Edigger, ININ |
Genre | Platformer |
Release Date | August 29, 2024 |
Back in the day, it wasn’t just Ninja Gaiden that received a revamp from the NES era – even the original Shadow of the Ninja underwent a transformation! Now, it lives on as the vibrant and thrilling Shadow of the Ninja: Reborn, a testament to its enduring legacy!
This adventure isn’t just visually stunning, it also offers two unique characters for gameplay: Hayate and Kaede. Although each character has distinct playing styles, the real fun lies in enjoying the retro arcade charm together by playing in a two-player cooperative setting.
If all that wasn’t enough, the game features rocking tunes by Iku Mizutani.
The primary factor that might limit the appeal of this game slightly is its overly vibrant and lively nature, which stands in sharp contrast to the gloomy atmosphere of Ninja Gaiden.
4.
Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider
Resist Your Programming

It’s quite possible to contend that the game titled “Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider” shares more narrative similarities with the “Shinobi ” series rather than “Ninja Gaiden“. However, I personally believe its storyline aligns with a comparable mood.
The title, “Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider,” encapsulates a journey filled with vengeful retribution set against a warped backdrop.
Similar to many titles created by JoyMasher, it blends various classic adventures and occasionally incorporates aspects reminiscent of the fast-paced action found in _Contra_.
Regardless, you can swiftly maneuver as if on a slippery surface and battle formidable adversaries. That’s exactly the kind of experience you’ll have when playing Ninja Gaiden games.
3.
Katana ZERO
Time is the Deadliest Weapon

Katana ZERO is an extraordinary, unique adventure that’s shrouded in mystery, filled with peril, and encourages questioning of everything seen and heard, revealing hidden depths below the surface.
Fret not if you came here for ninja mayhem, because there’s plenty of that in Katana ZERO.
As a gamer, I’ve found myself in a realm where time isn’t just my ally, but also a flexible tool. I can roll back the minutes, revisiting past decisions, or stretch out the seconds for strategic advantage. However, it doesn’t mean I’m invulnerable; one well-timed strike could still bring an end to my adventure.
The game stands out because it offers numerous strategies for conquering each level, drawing players deeply into its gritty, violent environment.
2.
The Messenger
Ninja of Past and Future

You’ve probably realized by now that I adore The Messenger.
Despite its flaws, this is an exhilarating ninja journey with high-stakes action, captivating music, and tough challenges to overcome.
Though it’s not flawless, this game offers a thrilling ninja experience packed with dramatic situations, great tunes, and hard-to-beat levels.
Just as I’m deeply immersed in the narrative of Ninja Gaiden, this game also weaves an engaging storyline that drives the gameplay, all while presenting formidable supernatural adversaries to overcome.
What makes “The Messenger” stand out is its ability to seamlessly transition not only between 8-bit and 16-bit segments, but also by blending traditional platform gaming with elements reminiscent of the Metroidvania genre.
A fantastic adventure, but the very best is just ahead!
1.
Cyber Shadow
Sole Survivor

I’ve emphasized the significance of story in Ninja Gaiden, and it’s this aspect that distinguishes Cyber Shadow from its competitors.
In this tale, its significance to the journey cannot be overstated; it’ll leave you puzzled as you progress through gameplay. Being the lone member of his tribe left alive, Shadow stands as the only hope to overcome Dr. Progen and his legion of lethal robotic warriors.
Stylistically, this looks like a flashy NES game, and it features tight controls and deadly bosses.
There are many robots around, but there are also some shockingly hazardous creatures reminiscent of those found in the world of Resident Evil.
Essentially, Cyber Shadow is a passionate project crafted by a single developer and made possible through the support of Yacht Club Games. It’s an outstanding instance of a ninja journey that transcends the ordinary.
