In a typical storyline, a character embodying the classic heroic figure consistently champions tranquility and fairness. Such actions are motivated primarily by the belief that they’re morally correct, rather than requiring further justification.
A character labeled as an “anti-hero” isn’t always straightforward. While these characters can share a desire to rectify injustices, their motivations aren’t always pure or altruistic.
It’s possible that they prioritize their own interests over assisting others, or they might approach tasks in a manner that raises ethical or legal concerns.
Using an anti-hero character in a game can introduce fresh dimensions to otherwise routine narratives and scenarios, making the gaming experience more engaging.
10. Devil May Cry 3
Dante
In his debut in Devil May Cry 3, Dante from the game series Devil May Cry can be considered a protagonist who takes on that role by default rather than being deliberately designed as such.
In the third game, though he eventually thwarts Arkham’s plans to save the world, it wasn’t out of concern for humanity that he acted.
Dante was eager for the opportunity to engage Vergil in combat, and he also desired to prevent Arkham from gaining control of his father’s power.
Throughout his various appearances, Dante consistently expresses a mixed or indifferent attitude toward the assaults by demons.
If there were no issues concerning him or his family’s belongings, it’s likely that he would avoid all the unnecessary hassle.
9. Duke Nukem 3D
Duke Nukem

Duke Nukem, a well-known character in the gaming world, didn’t truly shine as a significant antihero until his appearance in Duke Nukem 3D, which was his third adventure.
Duke could potentially serve as the main barrier against an extraterrestrial attack, yet he’s not exactly known for his tact or sensitivity.
He’s battling the aliens primarily due to the fact that their attack disrupted his planned holiday.
Additionally, he is responsible for substantial destruction of property, frequently misuses performance-enhancing drugs such as steroids, and often squanders his time in adult entertainment venues.
It would be wonderful if someone other than Duke, who seems to have an excessively large sense of self-importance, could handle everything for us. However, that’s not the case, as we only have him available.
8. God Of War (2005)
Kratos

If your gaming experience is limited to recent installments of God of War, then you might recognize Kratos as a stern yet sensible father-like character who exhibits great strength.
Initially, Kratos wasn’t exactly a kind or virtuous character in the original game, if I may be blunt about it.
Before his quest for vengeance against Ares, Kratos had a reputation for widespread devastation and disorder, indiscriminately slaughtering both soldiers and the innocent in large numbers.
In essence, Athena gave Kratos a mission to safeguard Athens, but it didn’t matter to him who he needed to harm, so long as he could exact retribution on Ares in the end.
7. Saints Row (2006)
The Playa
![](https://static1.dualshockersimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/screenshot-615-cropped.jpg)
Originally, the Third Street Saints banded together with the primary objective of dismantling the three powerful gangs in Stilwater, ultimately maintaining tranquility throughout the city.
In this scenario, you’re more concerned with outsmarting and overpowering rival gangs rather than tackling a broader range of criminal activities.
Regardless, it’s important to note that despite any changes, you remain part of a gang, and you’re deeply entwined with questionable activities. Moreover, it’s highly likely that blameless individuals are unintentionally becoming victims in the line of fire.
In the original Saints Row series, The Playa’s relentless determination as an antihero can be attributed to the constant presence of a more menacing faction (either a powerful gang or an extraterrestrial empire) that he must confront and overcome.
6. The Secret Of Monkey Island
Guybrush Threepwood
![](https://static1.dualshockersimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/screenshot-616-cropped.jpg)
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve often pondered about the peculiar choice of labeling Guybrsh Threepwood from Monkey Island as an “anti-hero.” To me, it feels a bit off because he’s more than just a common anti-hero. He’s a lovable, bumbling pirate who stumbles into adventure with a heart full of dreams and a mind brimming with quirky ideas. Sure, he may not always follow the conventional hero path, but his endearing charm and good intentions make him so much more than an anti-hero in my book.
To put it simply, although Guybrush might not be as outwardly menacing as certain other antihero characters, it’s also fair to say that he’s far from being an entirely virtuous figure.
His greatest passion lies in becoming a notorious sea-roving outlaw, essentially a criminal at heart, whose initial voyage brought harm or trouble to many unsuspecting individuals.
Even though battling the infamous Dread Pirate LeChuck primarily serves as a means to an end, this goal encompasses two aspects: acquiring some pirate street credibility and captivating Elaine’s admiration.
5. Persona 5
The Phantom Thieves
![](https://static1.dualshockersimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/screenshot-617-cropped.jpg)
In contrast, although the groups in contemporary Persona series undeniably uphold justice, the Phantom Thieves from Persona 5 seem to reside in a zone that’s somewhat ambiguous or uncertain.
Indeed, the majority of their objectives involve manipulating individuals who have been severely warped, leading them to inflict cruelty upon innocents and coerce confessions. This seems advantageous to all parties involved.
Yet, they’re finding ways around the law through an approach that resembles brainwashing, as several characters hint at within the narrative.
In essence, the goal often makes actions acceptable, yet there’s no denying that Joker and his associates are still breaking laws, even if they seem charmingly similar to Robin Hood in their actions.
4. Sly Cooper And The Thievius Raccoonus
Sly Cooper
![](https://static1.dualshockersimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/screenshot-618-cropped.jpg)
When it comes to characters who are thieves, Sly Cooper certainly embodies a popular type often seen in stories – the suave and sophisticated rogue thief.
The Cooper Clan has traditionally believed that robbing other criminals is their motto, not out of concern for morality, but rather because it’s more exciting.
Initially, Sly confronts and successfully thwarts the schemes of the cunning Fiendish Five, a group who posed a threat and caused harm to the local population through various malicious means.
Yet, in this action, he not only interfered with several active police investigations but also made off with a significant amount of goods that likely belonged somewhere else.
3. Tales Of Vesperia
Yuri Lowell
![](https://static1.dualshockersimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/screenshot-621-cropped.jpg)
In the game titled “Tales of Vesperia“, the primary character, Yuri, is deeply concerned with the welfare of residents from the lower part of the royal city.
He’s tired to the point of exhaustion from seeing people mistreated by corrupt rulers and soldiers, and he frequently takes matters into his own hands as a form of self-appointed justice when those in power refuse to address issues.
To put it in my own words as a devoted admirer, not only does Yuri exhibit exceptional skills, but I’ve witnessed instances where he takes down influential knights and military leaders directly – a fact that underscores his unique abilities and unwavering determination.
While their actions might have saved innocents, as Flynn emphasizes, it’s crucial to remember that no individual should assume the roles of both judge and executioner, regardless of Yuri’s belief that his actions are justified in the long run.
2. Darksiders
War
![](https://static1.dualshockersimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/screenshot-622-cropped.jpg)
In the story of Darksiders, it centers around the ultimate battle known as the Apocalypse, where forces from both Heaven and Hell engage in their final confrontation.
In the story, the Four Figures symbolically known as the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, among them our main character War, serve as balancing forces. They prevent either side from initiating conflict before a predetermined moment has arrived.
If war is blamed for hastening the onset of the apocalypse, however, the Charred Council locks him up and tasks him with discovering who prematurely set off the trigger.
War isn’t a result of concern for the Earth, humanity, or any side of the cosmic struggle. Instead, someone interfered with what he was assigned to do, and higher powers have placed this issue onto his plate.
1. Pokemon Colosseum
Wes
![](https://static1.dualshockersimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/screenshot-626-cropped.jpg)
In the primary series of Pokémon games, it’s a strict prohibition that you are not allowed to try capturing another trainer’s Pokémon.
In the game “Pokemon Colosseum”, Wes, the main character, became the initial one to violate a certain rule by employing the Snag Machine to snatch Pokemons directly from their trainers.
It’s important to note that you can only capture Corrupted Shadow Pokémon, and the fact that their ultimate cleansing is beneficial is beyond debate.
Or:
It should be pointed out that only Shadow Pokémon can be captured, and there’s no argument about the good effects of purifying them completely.
As for me, I can’t help but notice that ol’ Wes is still swiping Pokémon left and right. What’s more, he was one of the folks who built the Snag Machine in the first place. So, it’s safe to say he doesn’t exactly have a spotless record in this whole ordeal.
