I, as a seasoned gamer and tech enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, have witnessed the rise and fall of numerous gaming studios throughout the years. Among them, some have left an indelible mark on the industry, their legacies echoing long after they’ve ceased to exist. Today, I’d like to share a few stories about such studios – tales that will make your heart ache, your eyes well up, and perhaps even elicit a chuckle or two.
Many video game studios have ceased to exist or no longer operate as they once did due to the constant rise and fall in the gaming industry.
This situation might arise because the company has filed for bankruptcy, its higher-up organization has terminated all positions in the studio, or the studio has undergone a radical transformation, much like the Ship of Theseus.
These companies were once powerhouses, but now their key personnel have shifted to various other teams or have left the video game sector entirely.
Today, we grieve over the demise of certain development teams responsible for crafting influential, remarkable, or incredibly diverse, legendary games, yet their journey ended tragically.
10. THQ
Diamonds in the Rough
If you share similarities with me, chances are that you recall recognizing the THQ logo on numerous games from your childhood, but at that time, it may not have held significant meaning because their products spanned a wide range of quality.
From around 2012 onwards, I’ve been an avid follower of this company that was known for publishing a vast array of content. However, their uDraw tablet product, launched in the same year, unfortunately faced an unprecedented failure, eventually leading them to financial ruin.
Previously, they had released notable titles such as Drawn to Life, You Don’t Know Jack, Saints Row, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, and numerous licensed games. However, these successful releases were not sufficient to sustain their business.
Following the sale of all their belongings and properties, the THQ brand was acquired by Nordic Games, an entity that shares only intellectual properties with the original THQ studio, having minimal similarities otherwise.
9. Atari
Brand Name Hot Potato
It’s possible that you’re unaware that the brand associated with the pioneering video game creator, Atari, has been passed among various corporations since 1984.
As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I’d recount my perspective on the iconic company behind the Atari 2600: They infamously produced a subpar interpretation of Pac-Man, a move that almost crippled the entire video game industry. Regrettably, they ceased operations in 1985 and passed through various owners since then.
Back in approximately 2001, there was a significant shift in ownership at Infogrames Entertainment – a change that I found quite noteworthy. This transition led them to utilize the company’s brand for retro consoles, compilation games, and other offerings designed to evoke nostalgia, often with the aim of cashing in on our collective memories.
Afterward, the Atari brand was passed on to numerous other studios, yet it bears little resemblance to its initial form, and these days, it’s scarcely employed by the current owners.
8. Sierra On-Line
Slowly Fizzled Out
Sierra Online, also recognized as Sierra Entertainment, was renowned for developing timeless titles such as King’s Quest and Frogger, in addition to distributing games like Half-Life, Crash Tag Team Racing, and numerous others totaling around 300.
Due to an overwhelming number of layoffs, closures, and cost-cutting measures, their main company, Vivendi, concluded that insufficient revenue was a pressing issue. As a result, they announced further layoffs and the elimination of more divisions altogether.
2005 saw a significant overhaul of Sierra, and during the 7th generation of gaming consoles, they enjoyed some success with TimeShift. However, upon Vivendi’s merger with Activision, Sierra effectively ceased to exist.
Consequently, the majority of their trademarks got transferred, leaving Microsoft as the owner of the Sierra name. However, it’s extremely rare to anticipate any new projects or releases stemming from this brand.
7. AlphaDream
Died With The 3DS
AlphaDream was a studio renowned for its high-quality work and extreme specialization. Mostly, it focused on the Mario and Luigi series in collaboration with Nintendo, taking on few other projects.
Due to a lack of diversity in their game portfolio, they faced difficulties when Mario & Luigi Paper Jam received negative reviews, and the remake of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga didn’t sell as well.
They chose to re-create Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story for the 3DS, however, it arrived too soon and too late. It was released two years following the launch of the Switch, on a platform that had already made the initial game accessible to play.
This Mario game turned out to be one of the least successful ones ever released, significantly contributing to the company’s downfall, ultimately leading AlphaDream to file for bankruptcy in the same year. (26 words)
6. Arkane Austin
A Recent Tragedy
Arkane Austin initially started out as a small, independent studio, eventually getting acquired by ZeniMax in 2010. Later on, in 2021, ZeniMax was purchased by Microsoft.
Developers behind popular games such as Dishonored, Prey, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and Deathloop now face stricter corporate supervision, a situation that historically hasn’t resulted in positive outcomes.
2023 saw the release of Redfall, a game that unfortunately didn’t perform well, leading to a wave of downsizing and studio dismantling at Microsoft shortly thereafter. Among those affected was Arkane Austin amidst the upheaval.
The termination came unexpectedly, as developers were still in the process of adding content for Redfall, only to receive a closure notice via email. It was truly disheartening to witness this unfortunate event unfold.
5. Hudson Soft
Lost To Time
In the mid-2000s, the pioneers behind hit games like Mario Party, Bomberman, and numerous other timeless classics, Hudson Soft, began experiencing a decline, largely due to important personnel departing from the organization.
In 2004, the inventor of Bomberman experienced financial losses, which led him to depart in 2006. Over time, a significant portion of the workforce either left or transferred to Nintendo’s NDcube department in 2011.
Approximately at the same period, Hudson Soft was moving closer to Konami, who served as their primary publisher. Later on, in 2011, Hudson Soft was fully absorbed by Konami.
In 2012, there was an agreement between the companies for a merger. This ultimately led to Hudson Soft ceasing to exist, with most of its staff being let go. As a result, the Bomberman intellectual property, once owned by Hudson Soft, is now largely overlooked by Konami.
4. Telltale Games
Stretched Too Thin
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always admired Telltale for crafting some of my favorite interactive story experiences. They’re the geniuses behind The Walking Dead games that had me on the edge of my seat, as well as other choose-your-own-adventure style narratives like Minecraft Story Mode and Tales from the Borderlands. Their work never fails to captivate me!
Despite delving exceptionally deep into a specialized field, the studio’s performance, for the most part, was subpar, with the majority of their releases (excluding The Walking Dead) not being as successful. However, the studio began experiencing difficulties from approximately 2018 onwards.
Approximately 90% of TellTale’s workforce had departed by September, as a majority of team members were unexpectedly asked to gather their belongings and exit the premises within half an hour after receiving news that the company was shutting down.
25 employees were left, forming a core team to complete the final tasks on ongoing projects, as Skybound eventually assumed control over the Walking Dead franchise, with Telltale ultimately disbanded.
3. Neversoft
Burned Up
In the early 2010s, Neversoft, known for creating the Guitar Hero series, Tony Hawk’s games, and Gun, lent their expertise to several Call of Duty titles as well.
Approximately in 2004, they divided into two entities, which ultimately led to their resources being stretched too thin, resulting in moderate feedback on their titles like Gun and subsequent Guitar Hero series.
Approximately in 2010, around 50 staff members were let go. The surviving teams then focused primarily on developing Call of Duty, until Activision decided to combine the remaining Neversoft team with Infinity Ward.
By 2014, the company was formally disbanded, and the last few staff members chose to destroy a statue of their company’s emblem, symbolically representing the tough and resilient spirit of Neversoft.
2. Midway
Sold and Sued
In the ’80s and extending into the early 2000s, Midway was a powerhouse of creativity, renowned for producing a multitude of arcade hits such as Tron, Mortal Kombat, and Killer Instinct.
By mid-decade, however, Midway faced significant financial struggles, reporting substantial losses on sales and accumulating a considerable amount of debt.
In the year 2009, Midway Entertainment sought bankruptcy protection, dismantling its studios through sales. However, this process proved to be more complicated than anticipated.
A multitude of allegations involving deceptive practices towards shareholders, fraud, and contract violations arose against the struggling company, effectively eliminating any possibility for Midway’s revival in the near future.
1. Japan Studio
Axed Before Their Time
One notable departure from this past decade was Japan Studio, a team within Sony that spearheaded classic games like Shadow of the Colossus, Ape Escape, and Bloodborne, among others.
Following the completion of the Bloodborne remake, their team faced a considerable downtime due to Sony’s decision to not renew the contracts of multiple studios.
Sony perceived Japan Studio as being overly rooted in tradition and struggling to produce exceptionally popular games, leading them to significantly reduce their workforce and transfer a fortunate number of team members to Team Asobi instead.
Essentially, Sony significantly reduced their internal development teams, leaving only Team Asobi intact. Regrettably, this means that the large team responsible for creating some of the most groundbreaking games ever made has been disbanded.
