10. Goahn vs Recoome is One of Dragon Ball’s Most Violent Battles

Captain Ginyu Saga

The fight with the Ginyu Force quickly becomes overwhelming. Gohan and Krillin would have been defeated by Guldo if Vegeta hadn’t stepped in, but then Recoome easily overpowers all three of them. After Recoome humiliates Vegeta, Gohan bravely tries to fight back.

Gohan confidently announces he’s Goku’s son and attacks Recoome with everything he’s got, but Recoome quickly retaliates. The fight is brutally one-sided, with Recoome breaking Gohan’s neck and leaving him seemingly lifeless. While a devastating defeat for Gohan, the scene showcases Toriyama’s excellent fight design and highlights how much Gohan has grown as a character throughout the Namek Saga.

9. Gohan vs Kefla is a Manga-Exclusive Fight

Universe Survival Saga (Manga)

Instead of having Goku battle Ultra Instinct Sign in the manga, like in the Dragon Ball Super anime, the manga version pits Kefla against Ultimate Gohan. While their fight mostly happens as a backdrop to other events, this contributes to the overall feel of the Tournament of Power – a truly unpredictable and chaotic battle where anything is possible.

The Dragon Ball Super manga depicts Kefla and Gohan as fairly equal opponents. Their fight is a skilled exchange of blows, with both fighters gradually tiring each other out. Gohan demonstrates he doesn’t need to transform into a Super Saiyan to win, ultimately sacrificing himself along with Kefla in a dramatic conclusion.

8. Gohan vs Super Buu is One of Gohan’s Finest Moments Before Everything Derails

Fusion Saga

While it’s disappointing that Ultimate Gohan doesn’t ultimately defeat Majin Buu, the build-up to his transformation and the fight itself are still very enjoyable, particularly in the anime. Gohan initially showcases his incredible power in his Ultimate form during their first battle, but Buu gains the upper hand by absorbing Gotenks.

Gohan’s battle against Buutenks is truly terrifying, as he’s completely outmatched. Despite this, he fights with incredible determination. The fight strongly echoes Goku and Vegeta’s initial clash from the Saiyan Saga, creating a sense that this could be the final battle of the series. While that isn’t true, Gohan perseveres and bravely withstands everything Buu attacks him with, making for a fantastic fight.

7. Gohan vs Cell Max is a Perfect Finish to Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

The final showdown with Cell Max is incredibly exciting, particularly in the Dragon Ball Super manga. For much of the battle, Orange Piccolo cleverly buys time, even pretending to die so Gohan can unleash his powerful Beast form. Once Gohan does, the fight really takes off. Toyotarou’s artwork during this battle is outstanding—some of the best he’s ever done in the series.

Gohan Beast effortlessly withstands all of Cell Max’s attacks, showcasing his incredible power. The most impressive moment is when Gohan Beast’s Special Beam Cannon completely destroys Cell Max. Both the manga and the movie versions of this scene perfectly capture how overwhelmingly strong Gohan has become in his Beast form.

6. Gohan vs Nappa Puts All His Training With Piccolo to the Test

Saiyan Saga

The battle between Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, and Nappa is truly impressive, even though it’s incredibly uneven. None of them could beat Nappa alone, but working together, they manage to hold him off until Goku arrives. If Gohan hadn’t hesitated at a crucial moment, he actually could have finished Nappa himself.

No training could have fully prepared Gohan for such a desperate battle. He falters, and Piccolo ultimately gives his life to protect him. While Gohan doesn’t contribute much to the fight itself, Piccolo’s sacrifice is a powerfully emotional moment that dramatically changes Gohan, forcing him to grow and mature.

5. Gohan vs Frieza is the Culmination of Gohan’s Character Development in the Saiyan & Namek Sagas

Frieza Saga

The climactic fight against Frieza on Namek is a grueling test of stamina, forcing Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, Piccolo, and Goku to fight harder than ever before to withstand his immense power. During the battle with Frieza in his second form, Gohan truly shines and has one of his most impressive moments in the entire series.

When Vegeta hesitates and won’t fight, Gohan steps in and manages to seriously injure Frieza. His power briefly surges past 1,000,000, actually hurting Frieza for the first time. In the Dragon Ball Z anime, Gohan briefly fights Frieza again after seemingly defeating Goku, risking his own life to give his father a chance – a memorable and well-regarded filler scene.

4. Gohan vs Vegeta is a Fantastic, Underrated Finish to the Saiyan Saga

Saiyan Saga

After Piccolo’s sacrifice, Gohan becomes incredibly determined. When he and Krillin realize Vegeta is creating an artificial moon, Gohan courageously returns to the fight to save his father. With Vegeta’s giant ape form defeated by Yajirobe’s sword, Gohan is left to battle the powerful Saiyan prince on his own.

Even though Gohan isn’t strong enough to beat Vegeta, he manages to hold him off for a while, giving Goku time to explain the Spirit Bomb to Krillin. Gohan fights surprisingly well against Vegeta, demonstrating how much he’s grown since the beginning of the series. He’s transformed from a timid child into a true hero, proving he’s worthy of being Goku’s son.

3. Future Gohan vs Androids 17 & 18 is Simply Heartbreaking

Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks

Future Gohan is arguably the most heartbreaking character in Dragon Ball. In his timeline, Goku succumbed to the Heart Virus before he could train Gohan, and then all the other Z Fighters were killed by the Androids. This left Future Gohan completely on his own and ill-equipped to face his versions of Android 17 and 18.

In the future timeline, Gohan fights bravely against the Androids and does his best to train Trunks, but he ultimately loses an arm in a desperate battle. Despite this injury, he gives everything he has in a final showdown with Androids 17 and 18. Sadly, he isn’t powerful enough to win against them working as a team. While his fight is considered a standout moment in the History of Trunks saga, it isn’t enough to secure victory.

2. Gohan vs Goku is a Beautiful Conclusion to Akira Toriyama’s Time With Dragon Ball

Super Hero Saga

Chapter 103 of Dragon Ball Super was the final chapter Akira Toriyama completed before his passing, and it provides a fitting conclusion to his work on the series. The chapter features a sparring match between Gohan Beast and Ultra Instinct Goku, where Gohan actually defeats his father for the first time.

Gohan’s win highlights a key idea in Dragon Ball: each new generation surpasses the last. Beyond that, the fight itself is brilliantly animated and exciting, showcasing some of the series’ best action. Both Gohan and Goku act true to their personalities, and they’re genuinely happy to see how strong the other has become, sharing a final heartwarming moment as father and son, all thanks to Akira Toriyama’s vision.

1. Gohan vs Cell is Nothing Short of a Masterpiece

Cell Games Saga

Gohan’s battle with Cell was the culmination of everything the Androids Saga had been leading towards, ever since Future Trunks warned everyone. The fight is full of iconic moments, including Gohan’s initial reluctance to fight, Android 16’s selfless sacrifice to inspire him, and Gohan’s incredible transformation into a Super Saiyan 2.

The fight between Gohan and Cell represents the peak of Gohan’s growth in Dragon Ball Z. He’s forced to overcome his reluctance to fight and embrace his heritage as Goku’s son. The battle is incredibly powerful and moving, and tragically, Goku sacrifices his life to pass the responsibility onto Gohan, who ultimately defeats Cell with the iconic Father-Son Kamehameha. It’s a truly memorable fight, and sets a high standard for all of Gohan’s future battles.
