Occasionally, you might stumble upon an independent game that captivates you deeply, offering some of the most captivating, immersive playtime you’ve known. However, these games often conclude in just a few short hours.
At times, there’s a game that becomes just as cherished as the others, yet it consistently maintains its allure, offering endless enjoyment and repeat play without fail.
Here are ten indie games that I frequently revisit, immerse myself once more, and never grow weary of exploring their various aspects.
To maintain variety, about half of the items on this list are likely to be roguelikes or roguelites, while the remaining half can come from any other game category. If we didn’t have this restriction, the list would mostly feature one genre, which wouldn’t make for an engaging read.
10.
Stardew Valley
Farmed For Hours
Initially, you might assume that Stardew Valley is just another game requiring extensive time investment (a hundred hours or more) that you’d only play once. However, what makes it unique is that it’s actually a game with so much depth and replay value that you could invest a hundred hours in it, not just once, but multiple times over.
Exploring the incredible potential of optimizing every minute detail, or opting for various challenge modes, the game offers an array of exciting experiences that make playing irresistible.
As a devoted player, I’m constantly striving to refine and master every detail within this game. It’s about finding that ideal balance when choosing gifts to foster friendships, and strategically planning my fishing and foraging trips to ensure the completion of the community center by the end of year 1.
The change turns it into an intricately strategic game focused on maximizing efficiency and yield in farming, and I find that fascinating.
9.
Hades
Delve Into Death

In the Roguelike genre, Hades stands out by shattering conventional norms, since repeatedly playing it isn’t monotonous thanks to its perpetual advancement. Rather, each playthrough offers fresh possibilities and improvement as you accumulate additional choices.
Each fresh weapon you acquire seems akin to stepping into the shoes of a novel character, boasting an entirely distinct skillset. The persistent stat enhancements primarily ensure that gameplay remains consistent yet tough.
After several practice dives, feel free to register and perhaps challenge yourself with a taste of ‘Hell Mode’, where you will receive an intense workout until you’ve had enough.
There are countless methods to enjoy this game, and although many roguelikes can become overly simple and tedious, Hades consistently remains one of the toughest games out there, if you allow it to be.
8.
Hollow Knight
Winding Routes

In my opinion, Hollow Knight might boast the finest layout found in any Metroidvania game to date. This is primarily due to the fact that there are approximately one hundred different paths you can traverse through Hallownest, each one providing a fulfilling and deliberate experience.
Immediately following Forgotten Crossroads, there are several paths you can take: one leads to Greenpath, which is quite evident. Alternatively, you may choose to explore Crystal Peak, or if you have mastered the sequence breaks, venture into Fungal Wastes.
Experiencing a blind walkthrough past the City of Tears will lead to a journey completely different from yours, making it incredibly intriguing and compelling for me to replay and uncover all the fresh surprises.
Apart from that, the Pantheons serve as a means to test your patience and skill for a period of about a week or two. They are renowned for their difficulty, boasting countless strategies you can employ in overcoming them.
7.
Dead Cells
Quite Roomy

As a gamer, I’ve been immersed in the world of Dead Cells for quite a while now, and I can’t help but feel like there are hidden corners yet to be discovered. It’s a roguelite metroidvania, and let me tell you, it truly lives up to its genre.
At every turn, slicing through adversaries provides an immense sense of gratification, bulldozing through chambers gives the impression that you’re unstoppable, and I can’t get enough of this cosmic wrecking ball feeling.
Unlocking each feature expands the game more, and it never feels like these unlocks are pushing me towards an easier experience; instead, it seems like I’m gradually unveiling a comprehensive set of tools at my disposal.
It seems as though I might be able to play this game multiple times, yet I’ll always find new boss cells to conquer, making the experience exciting as I delve into various weapon configurations and modifications. I truly enjoy the sense of endless discovery it provides.
6.
Rivals of Aether 2
Freedom Fighting

It’s clear that developing a deeply mechanical and immersive fighting game can guarantee a large, dedicated player community who find it hard to quit playing, and Rivals of Aether 2 does this exceptionally well.
Each character stands out uniquely, presenting a one-of-a-kind gameplay approach that isn’t commonly found in platform fighters, with the exception of Clairen whose playstyle appears to be a standard feature across all platform fighters.
Above the given platform, the continuous influx of fresh characters, modes, skins, and other elements keeps the game engaging, making it effortless to accumulate numerous hours of playtime.
I’ve played the classic campaign modes numerous times, and I’m eagerly anticipating replicating the same experience in the story mode. The controls are smooth, and fine-tuning my performance is incredibly satisfying.
5.
Balatro
Absolute Cinema

If you’re thoroughly hooked on gambling games, it’s likely that you’ve clocked up several hundred hours playing Balatro. However, if you haven’t yet, perhaps you should give it a try – it’s been called the most irresistibly addictive video game ever created on Earth.
As a devoted admirer, there’s an undeniable allure to this game that captivates me. Remarkably, the repeated melody that echoes throughout my journey doesn’t bore me in the least. Instead, it fuels my eagerness to delve deeper, promising just one more round before I reluctantly pause my adventure.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of gamblers stop playing before they can experience a major victory, meaning that many individuals never discover the potential for this game to offer numerous rewards or prizes.
Reaching gold stakes across every deck is an enormous challenge requiring numerous tries, and success isn’t guaranteed since the game tends to withhold the fifth diamond needed for a flush.
4.
Celeste
Super Extended Hyperdash

Not too long ago, I found myself casually playing Celeste, a truly remarkable game. Its challenging mechanics paired with exceptional level designs create an extraordinary experience.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, the moves I’ve got are nothing fancy – just jumping, dashing, and climbing. But, let me tell you, the possibilities of how I can mix these three actions are mind-blowing! This game is one of the best speedrunning titles out there because of this versatility.
Experiencing immense joy while dash-jumping through stages at speeds faster than your initial playthrough, or completing the entire game in record time, is simply thrilling. And let’s not forget about the vast and creative modding community that offers countless custom levels to explore!
This game is truly amazing, and I make it a point to play through it entirely at least once every year. The level of replayability is remarkable for a purely linear 2D platformer, offering numerous strategies and maneuvers that gamers would find appealing.
3.
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
Virtual Insanity

In most games belonging to the roguelike genre that offer rewards for subsequent playthroughs, you typically find a few new characters, several new items, and additional levels. However, The Binding of Isaac dared to push the boundaries and see just how much content could be crammed into a single game.
Approximately 700 rewards can be found in this game, with a significant portion of these being intricate items that have highly specialized unlock requirements, along with associated achievements. This results in quite the challenge when aiming for a 100% completion.
It’s highly unlikely that you could complete the main game along with all DLC content and fully unlock everything within 100 hours. In fact, it’s almost unbelievable that you could exhaust all the activities in this game due to its abundant content.
The game is so engaging with its excellent roguelike features, enjoyable mechanics, and formidable bosses that even the law-abiding citizen in you might feel tempted to break the rules – and yet, this factor only adds to the endless possibilities for replaying the game.
2.
Terraria
Keep Digging

I’ve spent approximately 2000 hours exploring the world of Terraria, and when the next update comes out, I’m ready to put in a few hundred more hours. This sandbox RPG offers an exceptional gaming experience that consistently improves over time.
Each update introduces an abundance of fresh content, without hesitating to revamp and improve everything that was previously in place. To me, it becomes increasingly engaging as your proficiency grows.
As a gamer, I’ve found that every challenge has its answer – be it a strategic counter for each boss, a customizable arena to tailor my battles, or the perfect combination of armor to maximize my stats at any given level. And let me tell you, there’s always something bigger and more formidable waiting just around the corner!
Experience the joy of playing this game in its original form has consistently been fantastic, and with Terraria’s ModLoader now being an official expansion pack on Steam, it ensures that I can never completely step away from Terraria before it fully engulfs me.
1.
Risk of Rain 2
Viscious Cycle

In 2023, I found myself completely engrossed in Risk of Rain 2, playing the game daily for several months straight, clocking up an impressive 200 hours, due to its highly addictive nature.
Each character stands out distinctly and engagingly, boasting enjoyable equipment sets that boost their satisfaction. Moreover, all the accessories work harmoniously with others, while the dismantling mechanism reinstates an element of chance in your favor.
This game boasts the richest skill expression among all roguelikes I’ve encountered to date. It’s hardly surprising that I’ve spent more time playing this roguelike than any other, and even after unlocking every achievement, there’s still much more for me to explore within it.
There are numerous logs to gather, countless mountainous challenges for each character to conquer, and countless distinct playthroughs that leave me eagerly anticipating diving in hundreds of times more.
