At the end of the year, attending The Game Awards is a delightful conclusion. It honors the exceptional games and acknowledges the tireless efforts of those who brought these impressive projects to life.
Generally, it’s the big-budget AAA games that tend to grab the most attention and frequently win the Game of the Year (GOTY) award. The indie game scene often gets less focus, unless a rare indie title manages to compete with the AAA games in the GOTY discussion.
Let’s reminisce about past award ceremonies, examine the games that were contenders for the Best Independent Game Award, and based on our current perspective, determine which ones stand out as the most exceptional and worthy nominees in the history of this category.
10.
Spiritfarer
Learn To Let Go
Among several games vying for this accolade, some might boast greater technical prowess. However, it’s undeniable that Spiritfarer merits a place on this list not just due to its Ghibli-like aesthetic and comforting gameplay, but also because of its powerful storyline that will resonate deeply, leaving you emotionally drained.
The game marketed as ‘an endearing resource management game concerning mortality’ truly excels across all aspects, providing an unforgettable cast that will capture your heart, a relaxed gameplay rhythm free from tension, consequences, or loss scenarios, and one of the finest soundtracks the gaming world has ever produced.
It’s delightful to navigate, gathering strays and providing them with a new abode. Yet, it’s just as painful, like a knife through the heart, when you must part ways. However, these emotional moments are what make this experience so endearing, significant, and iconic.
9.
Sea of Stars
Triggers Your Nostalgia

Over the years, numerous independent (indie) and triple-A Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) have attempted but ultimately fallen short of recapturing the magic that games like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Mana series, and Suikoden embodied during their peak in the 1990s. These games represented the zenith of these series at a time when they were at their absolute best.
Yet, while numerous attempts fell short, Sabotage Studios triumphantly managed to create a spellbinding journey. This captivating escapade draws inspiration from the mechanics and aesthetics of previously mentioned games, but also introduces a wealth of fresh and exhilarating, contemporary elements that distinguish it from other titles in its genre.
The world bursts with life, the background music is lively, the gameplay unfolds smoothly yet engagingly, offering a balanced level of difficulty. Notably, Garl is a charismatic companion and the type of friend everyone dreams of having.
It wasn’t simple to exclude The Messenger, another Game of the Year contender from Sabotage, from this list, but Sea of Stars slightly surpassed it for my personal preference.
8.
Inscryption
A Deadly Deckbuilder

I can’t resist games that involve deck building, especially when they offer something fresh and blended from different genres. Given this, it won’t be a shock that I hold a deep affection for Daniel Mullins’ intriguing, immersive card game set in an escape room, titled Inscryption.
Or:
I’m quite partial to deck-builder games, and when they offer a unique mix of genres, it really grabs my attention. As such, it should come as no surprise that I’m captivated by Daniel Mullins’ dark, engaging escape room card game called Inscryption.
Just as with his other creations, Inscryption initially gives the appearance of a typical game from its initial glances. However, as you peel back layers of mystery and venture further into this enigmatic title, it becomes clear that there’s a depth to the narrative and environment that is not immediately apparent.
The game offers a wide range of play styles, making it enjoyable for many players. For individuals primarily interested in the engaging deck-building aspect, there’s even an additional option called Kaycee’s Mod that lets you focus solely on that part of the game.
This game is exceptionally captivating, hard-to-resist, and mesmerizing as a deckbuilding game goes, and there’s simply no other title quite like it. Therefore, it’s an absolute must-try for any indie enthusiast.
7.
Celeste
A Mountain To Climb

2D platform games are abundant today because they are relatively simple to develop. However, it’s important to note that due to the high number of these games, it’s extremely challenging to distinguish oneself and achieve success in this genre.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the moment when Celeste, the captivating 8-bit throwback, burst into our gaming world. The platforming community was left in awe by its intricate, gratifying, and demanding gameplay, setting a new standard that few games have managed to match before or since.
Furthermore, Celeste not only provides entertainment but also shares a deeply emotional narrative about Madeline’s journey towards self-discovery and managing their mental health issues.
This game is exceptionally crafted, offering an impressive platforming experience. It’s also notable for its vibrant speedrunning community. If you’re someone who enjoys playing games at high speeds, Celeste has a dedicated community that caters to your style.
6.
Return of the Obra Dinn
Get Your Sea Legs

Though Papers, Please by Lucas Pope didn’t initially captivate me, his masterful nautical puzzle, The Return of the Obra Dinn, eventually convinced me.
In this detective game, you assume the role of an insurance representative. Equipped with a mystical timepiece, you can investigate multiple scenes of incidents that occurred on the ship during its tragic journey. This will help you identify who was on board, but more crucially, discover what happened to them afterwards.
This puzzle presents a one-of-a-kind challenge that requires logical reasoning, experimentation, deep thought, and a bit of maritime wisdom to solve it successfully. Yet, even for beginners finding their footing, there’s ample fun to be found in the process.
Investing your time and effort into the game Return of the Obra Dinn is rewarded generously. If you dedicate yourself to it, it will undoubtedly return more value than you initially put in.
5.
Cuphead
Deceptively Cute

As a gamer, I’ve come across some indie games with adorable aesthetics that trick you into thinking the gameplay will be a breeze. But boy, were they wrong! These games are deceptively tough, and one such title that fits this description perfectly is Cuphead. It’s a challenge alright!
This seemingly tricky game that combines platforming and shooting presents visually appealing Vaudeville ambiance and precise platforming controls, making for a very enjoyable gaming experience.
This challenging platformer-shooter game has a Vaudeville style design that is eye-catching, along with finely tuned platforming dynamics that feel fantastic to play. It’s highly entertaining!
Despite having numerous tools at your disposal, you’re likely to face formidable challenges because the bosses scattered throughout this journey are exceptionally tough, rivaling the difficulty level of those crafted by FromSoftware.
Or:
With all the resources available to you, you’ll still encounter significant hurdles since the bosses in this game are incredibly difficult, matching the challenge presented by those created by FromSoftware.
This game can be challenging at times, but it’s incredibly entertaining. It also offers the unique opportunity to collaborate with a fellow enthusiast of dark humor for some cooperative play. Therefore, if there’s someone you think would enjoy this, plunge into the vintage-style cartoon mayhem as soon as you can!
4.
Stardew Valley
The Cozy Game Champ

It was inevitable that we wouldn’t overlook the highly acclaimed indie game that is undoubtedly the most well-known among its peers, and which has managed to outgrow the ‘indie’ category the most.
The farming simulator modeled after the Harvest Moon series has made significant progress since its initial release in 2015, due to numerous free updates. Although it already showed great promise back then, it was evident that this game was unique and as comfortable and hard-to-put-down as a game could get.
The design was well-established, meticulously updated for a superior, modern take on it. Its success has inspired numerous imitators over time.
Eric Barone has undeniably become an enduring figure in indie gaming with this release, and for as long as his next project, The Haunted Chocolatier, isn’t out, Stardew Valley is likely to remain the top choice for a comforting gaming experience. If you haven’t given it a try yet, take some time today to sow some parsnip seeds.
3.
Outer Wilds
A Wild Ride

Impressive to develop a captivating gaming idea. Achieving an aesthetically pleasing design for the game is also commendable. However, crafting an entire solar system to traverse, with physics that mimic reality and a time-loop mechanism, well, that’s more than just impressive – it’s almost unbelievable!
Mobius Games faced some challenges at the start with their latest release, and also dealt with the complicated situation involving Outer Wilds and Outer Worlds. Despite these hurdles, they managed to create an incredibly immersive, captivating, and extraordinary space-adventure game that’s now one of the most memorable ones in history.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve got to say, unraveling the time-loop enigma is an exhilarating challenge, revealing secrets one layer at a time and offering glimpses into the broader storyline. And let me tell you, that homespun soundtrack really adds to the experience!
It’s true, it takes its time to ignite, but once you allow it the space and patience, it can blaze brilliantly. The embers need time to transform into a powerful inferno.
2.
Hades
It’s Not A Phase, Dad!
In case you sometimes ponder the reason for the abundance of roguelike games coming out today, remember it can be attributed to the influence of the game Hades.
Hades, initially, didn’t have a significant following for the roguelike gameplay style. However, it invigorated this approach by crafting an engrossing underworld action adventure where even death becomes enjoyable.
The game kept offering new twists, enhancements, and surprises at every death, making it tempting to pause before reaching the end, simply to uncover what additional secrets it held.
Playing game to game in
This roguelike is like a particularly challenging, yet delightful, version of hell, making it one of my top contenders for the best game to have been nominated for this prestigious award.
1.
Disco Elysium
Cop Of The Pops

All the games mentioned so far are deserving candidates, boasting qualities worth admiration. Nevertheless, Disco Elysium takes it one step further, providing a unique indie gaming experience that may not be surpassed.
In this role-playing game (CRPG), you’ll find a murder mystery unfolding in the captivating city of Revachol. This location is so rich with history, detail, and suspense that mastering every aspect would require numerous playthroughs, making an encyclopedic knowledge seem almost impossible.
In this backdrop, exceptional storytelling is skillfully constructed, incorporating elements of black comedy, intricate political themes, absurdly funny situations, and a myriad of other captivating aspects.
Furthermore, the entire experience is reminiscent of a Renaissance artwork, functions similarly to an old-school computer role-playing game without the combats, and due to its multiple storylines, it provides numerous opportunities for repeated play.
To me, it’s undeniably the greatest independent game that has been created, and I can’t imagine anything extraordinary enough to dethrone this exceptional game.
