Regardless of differences in plot or gameplay, a top-notch Metroidvania always encompasses progression for the primary character. This isn’t limited to expanding exploration skills, but also enhancing their attacking capabilities.
And you know what’s a great way to get stronger? Using a skill tree.

Aeterna Noctis
Light and Dark Collide
In most games, you don’t take on the role of a literal King of Darkness. However, that’s exactly who you become when playing “Aeterna Noctis“.

In the majority of games, you won’t be the actual King of Darkness, but in “Aeterna Noctis“, that’s precisely the character you’ll play.
This game, hailing from a gifted Spanish team, is an aesthetically pleasing Metroidvania that largely gets things right. It excels in many areas of platforming mechanics, effectively mastering most of its fundamental aspects.
Upon playing Aeterna Noctis on my Switch, I found myself taken aback by the simplicity of its skill development system.
Indeed, it seems that the inclusion of both minor and major nodes in the skill tree contributes to an additional level of intricacy that is somewhat noticeable when considering the game’s otherwise stunning visual aesthetics.
The game isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s not a poor beginning either. Continue reading to discover more impressive options!

DEAD OR SCHOOL

The game, titled either ‘DEAD OR SCHOOL’ or simply ‘School’, was an intriguing journey brought to us by Marvelous and Studio Nanafushi. Despite having played it several years ago on a different platform, I can still recall its unique charm.
It blends elements typically seen in shows such as Senran Kagura, particularly those that cater to fans, with an all-out zombie outbreak akin to The House of the Dead.
In this game, you assume the role of the unexpectedly formidable, red-headed character named Hisako. As mankind hides beneath the ground from the mutants, she bravely seeks a secure route to the surface. Her ambitious goal is to eventually establish a school according to her somewhat debatable aspirations.
1) In her combat style, Hisako switches between wielding sharp blades and firing guns. As you progress, you earn skill points to unlock new talents from the available skill trees.
A worthy and fun adventure held back by a very rough translation and inconsistent difficulty.
8.
Afterimage
Glorious Engardin
Afterimage is another beautiful Metroidvania that prominently features a skill tree.
In this context, abilities are referred to as “Talents”. You can acquire these Talents by defeating bosses, progressing through levels, completing optional tasks known as sidequests, or even buying them from vendors.
Additionally, it is worth noting that once acquired, Talents can further be developed, becoming even stronger or more powerful.
This method provides the player with numerous strategies for enhancing the amnesiac protagonist, transforming them into an exceptionally powerful combatant who can handle any challenges that come their way.

Souldiers

Although the game’s stunning graphics initially caught my attention, it took several years for me to purchase it during a sale. Upon getting it, I discovered it to be an excellent example of the Metroidvania genre.
Apart from its captivating blend of elements similar to “Dark Souls” and “Metroidvania”, Souldiers is also an enticing journey crafted by a skillful game development team.
What’s presented there is generally sufficient for many games, but not so with Souldiers. Instead, it pushes beyond expectations by providing players with a choice of three distinct character classes: Archer, Mage, and Warrior.
Each of them not only exhibits unique playing styles, but also boasts individual skill progression paths to set them apart from each other.
Regardless of which group may seem more appealing to you, know that there’s no incorrect option. Prepare yourself for challenging conflicts, regardless of who emerges victorious at the end.
6.
Blasphemous
Unholy Might
We just got done with one super-challenging Metroidvania, so how about another?
The game “Blasphemous” skillfully incorporates elements reminiscent of the “Souls” series, yet it manages to create a fair experience that is surprisingly enjoyable, even for someone who initially doubted they would appreciate games using the “Souls” mechanics. This is quite an impressive feat!
Skills are challenging and need special items called ‘Tears of Atonement’ that can only be used at specific locations named ‘Mea Culpa Shrines.’)
At that location, not just is your sword enhanced, but you’ll also discover an array of novel skills, such as Sacred Thrust, Bleeding Miracle, and Holy Wrath.
Overcoming such power involves vanquishing formidable adversaries, who are far from beautiful, as well as carrying out lethal takedowns against numerous terrifying enemies. It’s incredibly gratifying, I must say.
Turns out, there’s a reason they call the main character the Penitent One.
5.
Sundered: Eldritch Edition
Everybody Loves Cthulhu!
As a dedicated follower, I’ve come to rely on Thunder Lotus for their exceptional artistic flair that never fails to impress. They consistently deliver intricate challenges and immerse me in richly crafted worlds, leaving me in awe with each new release.
It was those factors that prompted me to contribute to the crowdfunding of Sundered: Eldritch Edition. Subsequently, I endured several months before the game was eventually released on my Nintendo Switch.
In the game “Sundered: Eldritch Edition“, players venture on a chilling journey reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft’s works, immersing us in a dismal and fractured universe teeming with horrifying creatures and destructive technology.
Additionally, the game will make the player decide between Resisting or Accepting otherworldly energy, while also using shards at the Sanctuary in the HUB to improve attributes and acquire extraordinary Survival Skills.
Regardless of the route she takes, Eshe encounters a challenging ordeal within these ancient, deserted ruins.

Valdis Story: Abyssal City
Demons, Angels, and Ferals
Despite being released prior to games such as Hollow Knight and Valdis Story: Abyssal City, Abyssal City stood out as a game that was remarkably progressive for its era. Its skillful combat and captivating narrative set it apart.
The storyline of this game revolves around the killing of a divine being, which sets off a tumultuous conflict among her offspring – the shadowy deity Myrgato, and her luminous counterpart, Alagath, her twin sister.
Regardless if you choose Wyatt or Reina, you’ll find multiple unique character classes to select, all boasting their individual skill progression paths.
In the case of Wyatt, he possesses Warrior, Guardian, and Savior. On the other hand, Reina is given the option between Monk, Protector, and Golden One.
Spend your resources prudently to acquire powerful new strategies for defeating demons and Ferals more effectively.

Previously, I mentioned ‘Worldless’, which is a fresh perspective within the Metroidvania genre. In simpler terms, it offers an innovative twist on this popular game style.
I also had the fortunate opportunity to play a preview of this game several years back at PAX West, and its understated elegance left me spellbound.
The narrative isn’t just sparsely populated with symbolic and vague visuals, but rather, it tells a thought-provoking tale of peculiar beings entangled in an endless struggle.
It’s useful to resolve conflicts with a skill tree, and the one in “Worldless” offers two unique forms of currency to activate both passive and active enhancements.
As a fan, I find it fascinating that this game incorporates turn-based combat into its gameplay, a stark contrast to the exciting platform-based exploration it offers.
A great game, but we still have two extraordinary titles to end this list with!

Xeodrifter
Lost in Space
In the not-so-distant past, when they were still active, Renegade Kid was responsible for creating a host of games that I adored, particularly during the early days of the 3DS. Among these, two platformers hold a special place in my heart – one being the beloved Mutant Mudds, and another gem is Xeodrifter.
This brief yet delightful journey shares similarities with the style of “Super Metroid”. Instead of being guided step-by-step, it encourages independent exploration, allowing you to set your own path.
The unique feature that sets this game apart from others is its Arsenal Customization. With these enhancements, you gain the ability to modify your ammunition, making it bigger, firing in bursts like a shotgun, or even in waves, offering numerous other possibilities.
Regardless of how many upgrades you acquire, it won’t be enough to fully optimize all potential categories. Instead, you’ll find yourself picking a style that best complements your playing strategy.
A great game, only held back by its incredibly short length. Get ready for the final entry!

Ori and the Blind Forest
Love and Sacrifice
Among the most heartfelt and unforgettable journeys in the genre of Metroidvania, one stands out as a modern classic – “Ori and the Blind Forest”.
I eagerly anticipated its arrival on the Nintendo Switch, and when it finally did, I found myself unable to put it down until I reached its poignant ending.
The game feels remarkably similar to a live-action Studio Ghibli movie, with its storyline revolving around the imminent demise of the Forest of Nibel.
While little Ori doesn’t start that strong, using the Ability Tree, he’ll grow by leaps and bounds.
As a devoted fan, I can tell you that in Ori and the Blind Forest, you’ll want to use your resources thoughtfully. The game offers intense platforming and some tough battles against formidable enemies, making it an exhilarating challenge!
Truly a wonderful example of a Metroidvania with skill trees.
