Locating an outstanding platform fighting game can be challenging given the genre’s prevalence of Super Smash Bros. Many development studios have attempted to replicate its formula, but with inconsistent results, leading to a wide array of mediocre games instead.
But amidst this, we have gotten some excellent platform fighters, some that have the potential to rival Super Smash itself. And, as a big fan of the genre, here are some that deserve a lot of praise.

In my opinion, “Gun Mayhem 2: Even More Chaos” is an engaging little browser-based brawler that demonstrates you can create a robust fighting game without breaking the bank!
Instead of relying on hand-to-hand fights, this game features a distinctive method where characters wield firearms for combat. You don’t exchange punches; instead, you engage in gunfights. Each bullet fired pushes you backwards, and the more hurt you are, the farther you get pushed back.
Initially, each of you will get a personally chosen handgun at the outset. Throughout the game, there will be periodic weapon upgrades dropped from the sky for you to claim. Keep in mind that it’s crucial to snatch these up before your competitor does, or else you could find yourself in a difficult predicament.
The game doesn’t require any intricate techniques such as dodging, cancelling, special moves, or similar mechanisms. All you need to do is aim at your opponents with your gunfire and dodge theirs when necessary. To put it simply, the game offers only controls for moving around and shooting.
This game operates within a web browser, allowing you and your friends to enjoy it simultaneously from the same computer. Unlike a comprehensive platform fighter where you dedicate numerous hours to learn each mechanism, this is more of a casual game designed for passing the time.
9 Fraymakers
The Ultimate Indie All-Star Brawl
Fraymakers represents another effort aimed at refining the Super Smash Bros. formula, with varying degrees of success.
The combat and movement mechanics feel fluid, and it’s faster in terms of pace. Yet, it’s not very technical in combos and other mechanics, so it’s easy for anyone to pick up.
What makes it great is the blend of stunning 2D-pixel artwork and handcrafted animations, significantly elevating the visual appeal of the game. As you immerse yourself in the combat, you’re also appreciating the captivating artwork.
Nevertheless, the characters play a vital role in the game genre known as platform fighters. In the instance of Fraymaker, there seems to be a shortage in terms of quantity.
In this particular game, even though there aren’t many characters to choose from, each one is skillfully designed and entertaining to interact with.
The game boasts some well-known figures too; it’s teamed up with independent games, incorporating characters such as Orcane, Fancy Pants, among others. However, it’d be even more appealing if the character selection were more extensive, rather than limited to a few options.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, this game is definitely a work in progress. It’s got its glitches, no doubt about that. But here’s the kicker – every time I dive into it, I can’t help but enjoy the experience. It’s like being part of the team shaping its future!
8 Multiversus
Warner Brothers Does Smash
As a gaming enthusiast, I can tell you that Multiversus aims to establish a dynamic fighting arena within the expansive Warner Bros universe. With fan-favorite Cartoon Network characters such as Tom and Jerry, Fin, along with DC legends like Batman and the Joker, it’s shaping up to be quite an exciting lineup! Given the sheer size of Warner Bros, I can’t wait to see who else might step into the ring in the future.
As much as I adore the well-crafted characters within this game, I can’t help but feel that the gameplay leaves a bit to be desired. The movement feels somewhat weightless and sluggish, and I believe there’s room for improvement in the overall combat system.
However, it should be noted that these minor criticisms are coming from someone who is well-versed in platform fighting games. For someone new to this genre, these issues might not even be noticeable, and they’re bound to enjoy the experience immensely.
Beyond that, the game Multiversus is just as excellent as any other platform fighter, an ideal choice for enjoying time with your friends. I personally think the characters give it great appeal.
7 BrawlOut
Smash, Eat Your Heart Out
Since its debut in 2017, the game Brawlout has garnered a devoted fanbase. Upon initial observation, it appears to be just another typical platform fighting game, reminiscent of Super Smash Bros.
However, as you invest time into this game, you’ll come to appreciate its distinct qualities. To illustrate, each character within the game boasts three unique versions, each featuring varying statistics and exclusive abilities.
Regardless of whether you prefer hand-to-hand combat up close or keeping your distance with long-range attacks, you’ll find no shortage of characters that suit your preferred playing style.
Regarding the combat system, it bears a resemblance to that of Super Smash Bros, yet it’s quicker and more intricate. It’s slightly simpler to string together combos, but like before, evasion tactics are available for avoiding attacks. In essence, the game offers a well-balanced mix of offensive and defensive strategies.
If you’re searching for a game similar to “Super Smash Bros” but don’t have a Nintendo system, then “Brawlout” could be an excellent alternative for you.
6 Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2
The Ultimate Nickelodeon Battle Royale
The initial endeavor of Nickelodeon to develop a platform fighting game based on their universe, titled Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, didn’t fare well. However, the flop of the first version led to an unexpectedly impressive second installment.
In this game, you’ll instantly recognize the famous cast of characters, hailing from hit Nickelodeon shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, Danny Phantom, and Garfield. What sets it apart is that each character maintains a distinct feel, aligning closely with their animated counterparts.
Each character showcases distinctive phrases from the original voice talents, specific gauges boosting their abilities, and actions inspired by the source series.
For instance, Aang from The Last Airbender moves around on his iconic air scooter, and Garfield has a Lasagna meter that powers him once it’s filled. These little references trigger a nostalgic feeling and make the game much more fun.
As a fellow gaming enthusiast with a soft spot for Nickelodeon, let me tell you about an awesome platformer-fighter game that’s worth checking out!
5 Slap City
Chaotic, Clunky Fun
I’d label “Slap City” as an entertaining, humorous platform-fighter game that encourages laughter over intense fighting sessions.
This game is both awkwardly designed yet skillfully constructed, and it performs exceptionally well. The combat system follows the usual pattern for a Smash-like game, but what sets it apart is an innovative feature called Clutch mechanism.
One frequent application is its ability to swiftly alter the course of certain attacks on the spot. While there’s a lot more to learn about the clutch mechanism, this quick-change feature is the primary aspect you’ll likely encounter most often.
Regarding the characters, they offer a good selection. You’ll find an appealing blend of unique indie game characters such as Itte Dew and humorous originals like Ultra Fishbunjin 3000. However, there are not many characters to choose from, which might become repetitive after extended play.
Beyond this, not much can be added about Slap City, except that it delivers an enjoyable punch (pun included), which I believe encapsulates the essence of a platform fighter game.
4 Rivals Of Aether 2
Potential Smash-Killer
Rivals of Aether 2 has the potential to be the “smash killer” everyone has been talking about for ages. I know that’s a big statement, but let me explain why.
One way to rephrase that in a more natural and easy-to-read manner could be: “What makes this game really stand out are its combat and movement systems. It might take some time for beginners to grasp the technical aspects of moves, but once you get the hang of it, the game turns into an endless source of enjoyment. Plus, there’s plenty of room to grow as the skill cap is quite high.
The characters are quite good, too. Each character supports a different kind of playstyle and feels unique. For instance, if you like a faster, aggressive playstyle, go for Ranno, but if you prefer a tanky, hard-hitting character, Lexodont might be the best pick.
Additionally, the developers maintain a strong bond with their community, as demonstrated during the early days of Rivals 1. Not only were they organizing tournaments and events, but they were doing so for a community that was relatively small at the time.
This demonstrates that the team is deeply enthusiastic about the game, which is consistently beneficial.
3 Brawlhalla
An Inventive Approach to Platform Fighters
Brawlhalla stands out in the realm of platform-fighters, as it veers away from the traditional path of emulating Super Smash. Instead, it offers a distinctly mechanical, combo-centric, and rapid gameplay experience that sets it apart from other titles in the genre.
Each character in this setup is equipped with a dual-weapon system, meaning they carry two weapons at once. Regarding basic attacks, regardless of who wields them, all weapons perform the same actions. For example, both Orion and Hattori have spears, and their light attacks will be identical. However, it’s the heavy attacks that set each character apart.
In other words, combinations learned using the spear can be executed with any character wielding a spear, and by incorporating their heavy attacks, you can further enhance these combos.
In the gaming world I inhabit, investing effort to master those intricate combos pays off handsomely. The unique weapon system in this game makes it a breeze to transition to new characters, too. Let me give you an example: If I’ve honed my skills with the sword, learning the ropes of any sword-wielding character becomes a walk in the park for me.
Beyond just mentioning it, there’s an abundance of familiar faces in this game. You’ll recognize characters from various TV shows, video games, films, and anime. Some notable crossovers include Adventure Time, Shovel Knight, WWE, Mega Man, TMNT, and the list continues to expand.
I find Brawlhalla, with its clever combat innovations, to be one of my preferred platformer fighting games. Moreover, the game’s versatility lies in its wide availability across various devices such as smartphones, consoles, and computers.
2 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The True Platformer Fighter
It’s quite likely that you’re familiar with the concept of Super Smash Bros, a groundbreaking game that essentially created the platform fighting genre. The most recent installment in this series is called Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
If you’re new to the Smash franchise, this is an excellent starting point. Compared to the earlier games, it’s more refined and offers a gentler learning experience.
This game showcases 74 renowned figures from the Nintendo universe and beyond, offering a timeless side-scrolling fighting experience that we’re all familiar with.
Since it’s the fifth installment of the series, it’s evident that the gameplay has been refined nearly to perfection. The combat system aligns well with previous versions, and players who have experienced a Smash game will find the gameplay comfortably familiar.
Furthermore, on this occasion, you’ll find a wealth of content beyond platform combat, such as an extensive 20-hour adventure mode among other features.
Simply put, for Nintendo Switch owners, it’s undoubtedly the top-notch modern platformer fighter available, without a doubt.
1 Super Smash Bros. Melee
The Hardcore Version Of Super Smash
In my opinion, you could refer to “Super Smash Bros Melee” as “Super Smash Bros for serious players.” Although I count myself among them, by this I mean it’s designed with a competitive and tournament-oriented focus in mind.
In simpler terms, the game is quite complex and relies heavily on technical skills. This complexity arises from its long history, during which top players have mastered intricate movement techniques requiring quick and precise actions. Today, you’ll still observe players innovating, seeking moves that could provide them with an edge in competition.
To put it simply, “Melee” has evolved into quite a challenging game for many, which could deter novice players. However, beneath this competitive exterior, “Melee” is essentially a tough, cumbersome, yet swift platform fighting game.
