Navigating the bustling game market filled with various titles can indeed be quite tough. This is especially true when it comes to independent games, as fresh options seem to surface every few weeks, making exploration a daunting task.
To put it another way, affordability can be a significant factor, leading us to discuss a well-known publisher known as Ratalaika Games.

If you’re keen on playing timeless games using modern equipment, they cater to your needs. You’ll find platformers, anthologies, story-driven adventures, arcade-style games, and various other options available.
Considering everything, here’s a rundown of the top 10 outstanding games produced by Ratalaika Games. Prepare for budget-friendly entertainment that spans across every imaginable gaming platform.
10. Cyber Citizen Shockman 2: A New Menace
From Japan With Love
Platform | TurboGrafx-16, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Platformer |
Release Date | April 27, 1991 (TurboGrafx-16), September 22, 2023 (modern consoles) |
One aspect that’s been winning me over with Ratalaika Games lately is their initiative to bring games that were previously exclusive to Japan, to a wider audience.
For some time, the “Cyber Citizen Shockman” video games were only available in that specific region. However, Ratalaika later made a decision to bring these games to all contemporary gaming systems across the globe.
As a die-hard fan, I’d have to say that among all the Cyber Citizen Shockman series, it’s undoubtedly Shockman 2: A New Menace that stands out for me. It beautifully captured the charm of the original game while avoiding the imbalance and confusion found in the third installment. Compared to the enigmatic Shockman Zero, it was a blast to play!
Despite its classic charm, you might occasionally notice that this platformer seems a bit dated. You may find it helpful to utilize the built-in cheat codes to navigate through some particularly challenging areas.
If you’re seeking an old-school vibe with modern charm, definitely give this platformer a try!
9. Intrepid Izzy
A Girl’s Work Is Never Done
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Platformer |
Release Date | July 26, 2020 (PC), December 2, 2022 (modern consoles) |
Being an ardent aficionado of the Metroidvania genre for many years, I have a rather specific understanding of its characteristics. Although Intrepid Izzy offers expansive levels to traverse and skills to gather, I find myself questioning whether it truly fits my definition.
The most exciting aspect of this game lies in swapping costumes for unique powers and even scaling walls like a nimble ninja. Additionally, you’ll encounter thrilling boss fights that will test your skills.
If you’re searching for an entertaining journey filled with vibrant colors, a leading character who’s female, and plenty of humor, “Intrepid Izzy” is reminiscent of classic games from yesteryears. Its action sequences could easily fit into popular series such as “Sonic the Hedgehog” or “Mega Man“. It’s straightforward, charming, and enjoyable.
8. Parasite Pack
Tapeworms and Fleas Unite!
Platform | Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Puzzle, Collection |
Release Date | July 1, 2022 |
A type of game that fits perfectly in the independent (indie) gaming world is puzzle games. These games can express a lot using minimal graphics and mechanics, and they frequently surprise players with unexpected twists while providing countless hours of arcade-style entertainment. An excellent instance of this genre is “Parasite Pack“.
The game consists of two separate games. One is centered around managing a growing tapeworm, while the other involves a flea continuously jumping in an unending race.
Most notably, it offers 100 stages to explore, each boasting a vibrant, nostalgic retro aesthetic, captivating chiptunes, and an engaging narrative. In essence, if you’re seeking something unique for relaxation, Parasite Pack could be just the game you’re looking for.
7. Even the Ocean
Balancing Light and Dark
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Puzzle Platformer |
Release Date | November 16, 2016 (PC), August 19, 2020 (modern consoles) |
In today’s world, environmental disasters are not just something we grapple with, but they’re also a recurring topic in video games like “Even the Ocean”. Here, you assume the role of Aliph, who is given the responsibility to employ both Light and Dark power for restoring damaged power plants. The ultimate goal is to save the world from destruction.
This game incorporates aspects similar to visual novels, with a strong emphasis on its narrative. It’s not only engaging as a puzzle platformer, but it also offers an intriguing mechanic: Dark energy boosts your running speed while Light energy amplifies your jumping abilities.
Moreover, Aliph is equipped with a protective barrier that allows for blocking threats from four distinct angles.
One great feature is the ability to adjust the difficulty level according to your preference, allowing you to enjoy the game without being overwhelmed.
6. The Guise
A Dark Fairy Tale
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Metroidvania |
Release Date | October 20, 2020 (PC), March 17, 2023 (modern consoles) |
Although Intrepid Izzy might not be categorized as a classic Metroidvania game, certainly The Guise fits that description perfectly.
In this eerie story, a child without parents, known as Ogden, dons an unusual mask, causing him to metamorphose into a grotesque, bone-like creature.
Here is another version:
In the heart of a chilling tale, there’s an orphaned boy named Ogden who mysteriously turns into a gruesome skeletal being by wearing a peculiar mask.
And one more:
A grim fable introduces us to an orphan called Ogden, who, after putting on a peculiar mask, undergoes a shocking transformation into a hideous, skeletal monster.
Despite Ogden perhaps disliking his appearance now, his monstrous transformation has proven to be quite versatile for both battles and expeditions. He’s ready to confront a variety of formidable foes and unsavory beings with it.
The true issue at hand is if Ogden will manage to preserve his human qualities while seeking a means to restore normality in a dying universe.
5. Dandy & Randy DX
The New Goof Troop
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Puzzle |
Release Date | April 29, 2022 |
Let me confess that what I’m about to ask might reveal my age, but here it goes – does anyone recall the animated show “Goof Troop”? I’m not only talking about the series, but specifically the video game for Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)?
As a gamer, I can’t help but cherish the nostalgic vibes of that game, despite my general disinterest in puzzle games and icy terrains. Yet, there’s something about Dandy & Randy DX that resonates with me on a deeper level, making it feel like a spiritual heir to an old legacy.
Instead of being as demanding as the traditional game, Dandy & Randy DX presents a more approachable challenge. This game offers a variety of unique stages, adorable boss fights, and useful equipment that balances the difficulty. You can expect items such as a shovel, boomerang, grappling hook, and others to aid you in your journey.
The main issue with this game lies in its extreme straightforwardness. Although it offers secret stages, the overall experience is more like a quick stroll than an adventure, diminishing its potential for repeat playthroughs. Nevertheless, it’s vibrant, entertaining, and imaginative if you’re fond of puzzle games.
4. Sagebrush
Cult Living
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Adventure |
Release Date | September 18, 2018 (PC), April 24, 2019 (modern consoles) |
One type of game we haven’t discussed yet is the narrative adventure genre, as the standout choice in this category is an exceptional game known as “Sagebrush.
The aspect that makes this game captivating is its foundation on actual occurrences, along with an engaging, terrifying yet somehow hopeful storyline.
The game boasts deliberately vintage, low-fi, retro aesthetics that give it an older feel than its true age suggests. However, what’s appealing about it is that it offers a brief gaming experience, making it easily accessible.
Try out this story-driven experience; it’s a tale that will linger in your memory even after the final scene plays.
3. Klang 2
The Music of Rebellion
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Rhythm |
Release Date | October 20, 2021 (PC), November 17, 2021 (modern consoles) |
As a diehard fan of musical rhythm games, I simply couldn’t leave out Klang 2 from this list. Beyond being the continuation of an exceptional journey, it’s an impressive sequel that delivers an abundance of pulsating EDM tunes.
Despite the game boasting approximately 30 levels, what makes it unique is its quasi-procedurally generated design. Essentially, this implies that each playthrough offers a different musical experience as no song will ever sound exactly the same twice. Additionally, you’ll encounter some tough boss battles to really get your adrenaline surging.
One potential drawback is that this specific rhythm game is quite intense, which might deter some video game enthusiasts. However, if you’re up for a tough test and enjoy electronic dance music, it’s definitely worth checking out.
2. Fearmonium
Everybody Loves a Clown
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Metroidvania |
Release Date | May 20, 2021 (PC), December 8, 2023 (modern consoles) |
Fearmonium is what it looks like if someone makes a Metroidvania with a style inspired by Cuphead.
However, I think we can aim higher by incorporating themes of the human subconscious and introducing intriguing characters like twisted circus performers as well.
In this game, you enter the mind of a child who is battling their fear of clowns, but other phobias are also present. Given that it’s a Metroidvania style game, you will acquire peculiar new skills, including inflating like a balloon, as well as more conventional abilities such as double jumping and sliding.
The game offers numerous opportunities for personalizing your playstyle, along with fun accessory weapons such as mallets and bottle rockets. Additionally, it features challenging and unsettling boss encounters.
To put it simply, Fearmonium’s main drawbacks were the implementation of a Stamina meter and the initial issues with console versions, which included some bugs that hindered progress. Luckily, these issues have been addressed and rectified in recent updates.
1. Garlic
Stinky Yet Sweet
Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S |
---|---|
Publisher | Ratalaika Games |
Genre | Hardcore Platformer |
Release Date | June 15, 2021 (PC), July 7, 2023 (modern consoles) |
I’m just going to be honest here – Garlic is out of its freaking mind.
The captivating story follows a boy with an unusual head shaped like an onion as he ascends a hallowed tower in hopes of receiving a wish from the Digital Deity. However, his feelings for her subtly intensify into something beyond admiration, veering slightly towards an unsettling infatuation along his journey.
Throughout his journey, our protagonist encounters daunting perils and pitfalls in this relentlessly tough, yet seemingly just, challenging platform game.
The ascent is quite lengthy, punctuated at times with peculiar, laugh-out-loud mini-games reminiscent of those found in the game WarioWare.
Or simply:
Climbing takes some time, but it’s broken up by amusing, oddball mini-games similar to those in WarioWare.
Both convey the idea of a challenging climb with funny mini-games that resemble WarioWare.
Initially, I thought little of Garlic. However, it didn’t take long before I found myself becoming a devoted admirer. If you happen to be fond of platformers and appreciate indie games that really stand out, this game offers an incredible adventure that will definitely leave its mark on you.
