Initially, I started with the simple genre known as platformers, but soon enough, I switched to the fast-paced action of run & gun games. However, mastering these games proved to be a challenge that took me a considerable amount of time.
Initially, I used to play Contra on the NES with my babysitter, often failing miserably. Later, my friend and I honed our skills on Contra III: The Alien Wars. Eventually, I began to grasp the game better with Contra: Shattered Soldier.
Initially, I was just an appreciative spectator of this genre, but that encounter transformed me into a passionate fan. Fast-forward a few decades, and now I find myself compiling a list of top-notch run & gun platformers from the contemporary era.
Should I be permitted to select just classic games, over half of this list would likely feature the vigor of the legendary game, “Contra“.
Keeping that thought, let’s grab our ammunition bands and join forces to overpower sinister elements in this heart-racing lineup!
10. Contra: Operation Galuga
Back to Basics
It’s likely that you might be curious as to why Contra is at the bottom of this list. The straightforward explanation is that some of its most successful years are in the past, with games like Contra III, Shattered Soldier, Contra 4, and Hard Corps being among them.
However, it’s hard to imagine fast-paced action games like “run & gun” without the influence of “Contra”, which is why I decided to incorporate its latest installment, “Operation Galuga”.
One enjoyable aspect of this game is that it offers a well-balanced combination of traditional challenge and contemporary ease.
Due to the diligent efforts of WayForward, we now have exciting new elements such as voiceovers, various playable characters, unique skill sets for each character, and the mind-blowing Overload attacks.
Just like how playing “Contra” traditionally shines with a companion, it’s still an enjoyable solo adventure if that’s your preference.
Making your way through the eight challenging stages of Operation Galuga, you’ll need to grasp the timing perfectly and skillfully avoid enemy assaults if you hope to achieve victory. It promises an exciting, action-packed experience!
9. Mighty Goose
The Goose is Loose!

To kick things off, let me express my admiration for the artistry of Richard Lems, renowned for his work on KUNAI. It’s games like Mighty Goose that have truly won me over and fueled my fandom.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I must say that Lems truly surpasses himself in this vibrant escapade drenched in arcade vibes, affectionately dubbed “Mighty Goose“. If you’ve yet to encounter this captivating creation, let me enlighten you as to why it should definitely pique your interest.
The towering Swan gracefully blends fast-paced arcade rhythm, colossal boss fights reminiscent of Mischief Makers, and a wit that consistently made me laugh out loud.
In simpler terms, you’ll dodge bullets, build up your power gauge (Mighty Meter), and tactically attack enemies. Additionally, you can work with allies, wield strong backup weapons, and pilot massive mecha machines that shatter the ground.
The main disadvantage of this game is that it doesn’t include important sound effects at times, can feel too intense, and is rather brief. However, if you enjoy fast-paced action and find an eccentric plot appealing, join forces with this avian bounty hunter and defeat the Void King!
8. Mechstermination Force
Destroy the MegaMechs

One standout feature of the Contra series lies in its incredible, grandiose boss encounters. In Mechstermination Force, Hörberg Productions eliminated the need for intermediaries, dedicating their attention solely to battling titanic, intricately structured bosses throughout the entire game.
Instead of what I anticipated from the developer following Gunman Clive, it turned out to be a pleasant surprise that they showcased their inventive abilities instead.
Similar to Shadow of the Colossus, each stage presents you with a colossal robot (MegaMech) that you must defeat. At times, you may find yourself chasing these robots across the arena, while at other moments, you’ll be cornered in a confined space alongside them.
Regardless of the situation, it’s essential that you learn their attack strategies and discover a secure path to move through them safely.
To assist you, you’ll eventually receive some useful equipment that will increase your chances in battle, like Magnetic Gloves and Powered Boots. Believe me, every bit of aid will be crucial for you to overcome the cunning MegaMechs.
7. Broforce
Do It For ‘Murica

Instead of Contra’s raw, testosterone-filled chaos, Broforce amps up the energy with a generous dose of comedic parody.
Initially, it was enjoyable to partake in an amusing, if not slightly unfair, way towards America, even before it became fashionable. The blend of solo and multiplayer options created an absurdly entertaining adventure.
As a diehard fan, I’ve got to say, there’s an abundance of titular brethren to take control of, each boasting their own distinctive weapons and equipment. The game isn’t just about the main storyline, though it might only last a few hours. What truly sets it apart is the level editor, where you can immerse yourself in countless player-created battle arenas!
As a fan, I’d say it’s all about the chaos in Broforce! Nearly everything you encounter can be demolished, offering spontaneous tactical madness or a simple means of releasing stress through carnage. It’s an ideal playground for fans of run-and-gun action.
6. Guns of Fury
A Furious Metroidvania

Platform | PC, Nintendo Switch |
Publisher | Gelato Games Ltd. |
Genre | Run & Gun; Metroidvania |
Release Date | February 13, 2025 |
Among all the action-packed games on this list, I’d say “Guns of Fury” is the freshest addition. However, what truly sets it apart isn’t just its recency; it’s also an intriguing blend of run & gun and Metroidvania gameplay styles.
Even though Omega Strike was the initial blend of these ideas way back in 2017, it’s widely agreed that Guns of Fury represents the most successful fusion of contrasting themes.
In this game, you’ll be guiding Vincent Fury – not the famous agent – in his mission to vanquish the baddies who have taken the potent Tetra Cell. This technology was intended to alleviate an energy shortage, but now it’s being misused to create weapons of war.
In this game, the action is fast-paced yet there’s plenty of room for exploration too. You’ll uncover various tools that will help you traverse remote locations.
Beyond everything else, the game Guns of Fury offers a variety of conclusions, breakable walls concealing treasures, and mighty mechs to obliterate enemies into dust. An entertaining escapade brought to you by Gelato Games Ltd.
Or:
As if that wasn’t already appealing, Guns of Fury boasts several finales, collapsible walls with hidden riches, and formidable mechs for annihilating adversaries. A thrilling escapade from Gelato Games Ltd.
Or:
In addition to its other attractions, Guns of Fury delivers multiple endings, collapsible walls with buried loot, and powerful mechs for obliterating enemies. An exciting journey crafted by Gelato Games Ltd.
5. Metal Slug X
The Mightiest of Slugs

One famous title within the action-packed run-and-gun genre is “Metal Slug”. Although it tends to focus more on gunplay, there’s no denying its thrilling and difficult journey has captivated numerous gaming enthusiasts.
Although there may be differing opinions as to which one takes the crown, I opted to incorporate the highly entertaining game titled “Metal Slug X“.
This updated version of Metal Slug 2 not only enhanced the gameplay with fresh features like day-night cycles, upgraded weapons, and character morphing, but it additionally introduced formidable new enemies such as Mummy Dogs.
Battling wave after wave of adversaries, be it on foot or from the comfort of your battle-hardened tank, you’re sure to find plenty to delight in with this timeless journey. Here’s hoping for a contemporary rerelease that surpasses the ACA NEOGEO library edition.
4. Iron Meat
Fresh Meaty Violence

In a remarkable feat, the game Iron Meat skillfully embodies the vibrant spirit of a timeless series. It’s not just a thrilling, speedy shoot-em-up with running and gunning, but it also encourages repeated play to unveil an array of distinctive character costumes.
A terrifying life-form, capable of spreading through organic tissue, metals, and technology, breaks free from a lunar lab and triggers widespread havoc in no time.
As the valiant character Vadim, you’ll need to battle relentless waves of genetically altered creatures, ranging from human-like minions to colossal train beasts and many other formidable foes.
Similar to Contra, Iron Meat offers a diverse array of weapons to obliterate enemies. Overcoming the colossal bosses will require all the assistance you can get, even during the ultimate showdown against the embodiment of Meat itself. It’s an excellent contemporary example of retro gaming executed flawlessly.
3. Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider
From JoyMasher With Love

Run & gun gameplay typically revolves around weapons, but it doesn’t necessarily need them. Instead, it requires quick action and an energetic, arcade-like feel. The game Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider embodies this essence flawlessly.
As I, a reprogrammed super soldier, I find myself fighting against the very creators who brought me into existence. Originally designed for the preservation of an oppressive regime, my heart yearns for its destruction and chaos instead.
To aid in your journey, you’ll discover customizable chips that alter your playing style, making them ideally suited for the game’s swift and intense battles.
With your katana sword and agile acrobatics, you’ll possess all the tools necessary to destroy anything that stands before you.
While I thoroughly enjoy “Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider” and appreciate the retro flair displayed by JoyMasher, there are still more games in my list to explore and admire!
2. Cuphead
Deal With the Devil

Despite the fact that Mechstermination Force showcases an impressive boss rush run & gun style, Cuphead stands out as a more exceptional choice.
This extraordinary challenge isn’t just about running and gunning through platforming stages, but also involves demonstrating your mettle against a multitude of extravagant bosses, culminating in the defeat of none other than the Devil himself!
The unique, 1930s-cartoon-like aesthetic of this game sets it apart, accompanied by Big Band tunes that enhance your immersion, even as you find yourself repeatedly meeting your demise.
Regardless of its challenging nature, Cuphead exemplifies the deal every run-and-gun game presents: Conquer the patterns to secure triumph. While it’s not essential, you can obtain additional weapons and potent special abilities along the way.
1. Blazing Chrome
Go Down in a Blaze of Glory

I haven’t finished with JoyMasher yet, so I’ve saved the most impressive game for you at the end. Not just any game, Blazing Chrome showcases the skill of this team exceptionally well, and it’s a heartfelt tribute to the run & gun platformer genre pioneered by Contra.
As a fervent enthusiast, I must admit that the concept of this game resonates deeply with me. It paints a chilling picture of a world where AI-controlled robot armies threaten the very existence of humanity. The remaining resilient resistance must then wage war against these machines and forge a path forward.
In addition to being able to aim your gunfire in multiple directions, the game offers other exciting elements such as motorcycle chases, mecha rides, and massive boss fights reminiscent of Contra, adding a playful wink to the classic game along the way.
Despite being relatively small, every level in Blazing Chrome is brimming with enemies and boasts a unique aesthetic. If you’re a fan of run & gun platformers, this game is an absolute must-play.
