Space: The great unknown. It’s a fitting backdrop that could have made video games soar from the get-go, and indeed it has done just that on numerous occasions across the years.
Although modern games leverage advanced graphics to explore this genre further, it’s essential to note that space games can be traced right back to the dawn of video gaming.
As an avid space-themed RPG enthusiast, I’ve curated a top 10 list of the most extraordinary role-playing games set in the cosmos. Although there are numerous options, these ten games truly stand out.
These are games set in outer space, often spanning numerous celestial bodies, and usually featuring journeys through the cosmos via spacecraft or similar means.
10. Star Ocean: The Last Hope
A Space-Faring Adventure
Over time since its initial launch, Star Ocean: The Last Hope has earned increasing admiration, even though it wasn’t initially acclaimed as the next major JRPG.
The cause of this is the exceptional combat, which ranks among the best when it comes to action role-playing games.
The narrative moves swiftly along, offers an engaging development of relationships within your Love story, and while certain characters can be hard to stomach at times, overall it’s quite intriguing.
As a dedicated gamer, I must admit that the quirky graphics initially gave me a toy-like vibe, but once I got past that, I found myself immersed in an epic, lengthy, and mind-boggling game. The creative use of space as a canvas for the action was truly remarkable.
9. Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader
A Planet-Sized Adventure

It took several years for Warhammer 40k to gain traction, but only recently have we seen high-quality video games based on this well-known series emerge.
As a fellow gaming enthusiast, let me sing praises for the often overlooked gem, Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader. If you’re captivated by the grandeur of Baldur’s Gate 3, I wholeheartedly recommend giving this extensive and immersive space RPG a spin. It takes place in the bizarre and chilling universe of Warhammer 40k, where fear and danger lurk around every corner.
This game offers a rich, strategic battle system, where you can control an extensive roster of party members, each boasting numerous unique skills, weapons, and armor. For those who appreciate storytelling in RPGs, it delivers extensively with a wealth of lore, characters, settings, and a host of frightening foes to confront throughout your journey.
In this game, you engage in space battles against numerous adversaries, and your spaceship serves as a battleground. Additionally, you can traverse diverse planets, each with its unique narrative. It’s reminiscent of classic RPGs in many aspects but offers a thrilling, science-fiction, cosmic journey that is highly recommended.
8. The Outer Worlds
Fallout in Space

The Outer Worlds” is often referred to as ‘Fallout in space’, but this isn’t just an easy comparison – it’s incredibly apt.
In their final project, Obsidian Entertainment has captured the unique personalities, the distant demeanor amidst a collapsing world, and all that made Fallout: New Vegas appealing, in their latest endeavor.
As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, the narrative might not be as gripping as New Vegas, but the characters here truly shine, and the intricate RPG mechanics are nothing short of amazing. They offer a wide range of options, from all-out gunfights to diplomatic dialogues, making each experience unique. The storyline is full of twists and turns, with even single missions branching off in multiple directions.
As a gamer, I’d say the combat in this game leans towards the fundamental side of first-person shooting, yet it manages to carry me seamlessly through this entertaining and distinctly different space role-playing adventure.
7. Xenosaga
A Deep, Philosophical Journey in Space

Xenosaga offers a unique adventure distinct from other games. Despite retaining the conventional turn-based JRPG structure and visuals, its narrative is profoundly intricate, exploring themes of religion, existentialism, and delving into dimensions reminiscent of classic sci-fi masterpieces like 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The initial installment of the trilogy is incredibly engaging, serving as both the foundation and unfolding like an exciting enigma. It features an intriguing ensemble of characters that challenge conventional JRPG norms, while offering a multitude of locations to delve into as you traverse the cosmos on a quest to uncover the origins of a devastating alien phenomenon called the Gnosis.
This game features numerous extended cutscenes and protracted boss fights, making it ideal for those who appreciate a more film-like style in space role-playing games. If you can enjoy such an approach, you’ll likely discover aspects that captivate you.
6. No Man’s Sky
Infinite, Explorable Space

In my view, “No Man’s Sky” transcends the boundaries of being merely a video game; it offers a unique, immersive encounter that feels almost like a groundbreaking shift in the realm of entertainment for many players, including myself.
This game offers an unprecedented experience as it allows you to traverse space both on the ground and in the air endlessly. Its graphics are breathtakingly beautiful, providing a captivating depiction of what future space exploration might look like.
The narrative unfolds with increasing intricacy over time, yet just existing within this virtual universe offers a unique, immersive experience.
The fighting is strong, but what truly sets it apart is the immersion in the game world. It’s your unique space journey.
In this game, you assume the role of a cosmic wanderer, free to chart your own course and engage in various activities such as space piracy, salvaging, resource gathering, leisurely flight, or discovering abandoned ships. The universe is yours for the exploring, with countless opportunities to uncover new experiences within this expansive sci-fi fantasy world.
5. Starfield
A Vast Galaxy to Explore

Despite some people feeling let down by Starfield because of high expectations, it offers a truly extraordinary gaming experience that only a handful of other games can match.
You’ll have the exciting opportunity to discover a variety of planets, each boasting distinct features, intriguing wildlife, and hidden mysteries waiting to be uncovered.
In this game developed by Bethesda, you’ll find one of their most immersive Role-Playing Games in recent times. This means you have the freedom to guide conversations in various directions. Similarly, when it comes to missions, you’re given numerous opportunities to choose between stealthy or loud approaches, or even take opposing stands in a conflict, adding depth and variety to your gameplay experience.
This game may not be flawless, but it undeniably carries a touch of the enchantment we’ve been yearning for from Bethesda, and in terms of role-playing games set in space, it’s hard to beat.
4. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
One of the Best Star Wars Stories

Among the stellar Star Wars saga titles, none have left me quite as captivated as the exceptional Star Wars Jedi series. Though future installments may grace our screens, I remain deeply impressed by the quality and impact of this particular series.
Experiencing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor offers a stunning journey filled with breathtaking graphics, top-notch vocal performances, and combat that sets new standards for Star Wars action.
Engaging in this battle is every Jedi’s ultimate dream. It encompasses every fighting style and every Jedi’s power-fantasy, all of which are brought to life magnificently on screen.
Additionally, there’s a captivating tale rich in intriguing lore revelations and thrilling plot twists, which have become characteristic of this series.

Moreover, the narrative offers a wealth of engaging lore insights and surprising plot developments that you’ve grown accustomed to in this series.
In the course of this game, you’ll visit numerous unique planets, ensuring that no location becomes overly repetitive.
As far as space-based, action RPGs go, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an awesome experience.
3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2
An Epic Space-Faring Sequel

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 presents a much more somber narrative compared to its predecessor, offering fewer comedic moments from its vibrant character roster; however, I appreciated this shift towards a grittier storyline.
Using Obsidian as the developer, the role-playing game mechanics seemed richer and provided a higher degree of control over the narrative direction, allowing for a more personalized storyline.
The narrative is remarkably captivating, featuring exceptional characters such as Kreia who propel the plot, along with surprising turns of events that have kept the series on track towards the massive acclaim it has yet to fully achieve, some 20 years since its inception.
As a gamer, I find that the combat system in this new game feels reminiscent of the original, yet it’s been amped up with a dash of complexity and an injection of action. This transformation has resulted in a faster-paced experience that offers me a plethora of abilities to experiment with and enjoy!
The diverse settings scattered across the game are equally captivating, providing numerous distinct locations within this intricate and ominous Star Wars adventure.
2. System Shock
Trapped in the Depths of Space

System Shock offers a unique take on the role-playing game genre, making it an essential play for enthusiasts who appreciate space-themed RPGs.
In System Shock, you’ll find yourself spending most of your time aboard a ship. However, far from being boring, this journey will prove anything but monotonous.
In a scenario where an unruly artificial intelligence has taken control, causing chaos and terror aboard a spacecraft, you find yourself tasked with deciphering the mystery behind these events as various horrors pursue you throughout the vessel.
The game is steeped in an eerie ambiance and emotional tone, and the intense interactions you’ll experience during play will leave a lasting impression on you.
In this game, you have the freedom to develop your character according to your preferences, by emphasizing various skills that align with your preferred playing style.
It’s a much slower-paced RPG, but if you’re looking for immersion and horror, give this one a try.
1. Mass Effect Legendary Edition
A Sci-Fi Space Opera For The Ages

Since everyone seems to have a preferred title from the original Mass Effect collection, we’ve gathered them all together. Now, you can purchase this complete set at a price point comparable to a single game deal today!
Let’s dive right into this remarkable piece! It boasts an extraordinary narrative, memorable personalities, intricate decision-making mechanisms with tangible results, fascinating environments to delve into, engaging battles, and exceptional vocal performances.
This set is terrific by itself, but what truly sets it apart is the ability to trace one continuous storyline from the initial game all the way through to the last, which adds a unique charm to it.
In each game you play, the narrative unfolds based on the decisions you make, and these choices persist across games. So, if a character perishes in the initial game, they won’t be alive in the third one either.
The unity within this series truly sets it apart, and while its finale may spark debate, it’s the trip we take, rather than where we end up, that matters most.
If you want a great space RPG, Mass Effect is the standard.
