It’s always inspiring when we come across stories about the underdog triumphing. At one time or another, many of us have felt like we were being overlooked or faced adversity. Witnessing someone else facing similar struggles and overcoming them gives us a sense of strength and motivation.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve found myself rooting for the underdog more times than I can count. The world of gaming is brimming with tales of improbable champions, proving that sometimes, it’s not about the character you start with, but the journey you embark on.
You could even argue that games are one of the best formats for a rise from the ashes.
In essence, when you’re immersed in a story where you direct the plot and actions, it feels like you’re side by side with the main character, witnessing their triumph over adversity and emerging as the central figure destined for greatness.
10. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
From Prisoner To Hero
In the stories of Oblivion and Skyrim, the main characters find themselves in comparable predicaments as they’re both incarcerated. Yet, the character from Oblivion experiences a comparatively less action-packed ordeal.
As a fervent enthusiast, I’d rephrase it this way: In the beginning, the future savior of the Oblivion Crisis was merely an unassuming inmate, locked away in a cell. The details of his imprisonment remain vague, but what matters is that he had nothing – no power, no influence, just like any ordinary individual.
As I found myself in a tight spot, fortune smiled upon me when none other than the Emperor of Tamriel just so happened to stroll by as I was escaping. Mistaking my desperation for courage, he took notice of me, and from that moment, I became part of his legend.
Despite their downfall, they remain impoverished and aimless, achieving prominence primarily through a mix of cleverness and raw power.
9. Danganronpa
A Normal Dude In A School Full Of Weird Geniuses
At Hope’s Peak Academy, each student was selected based on their exceptional, one-of-a-kind ability or talent, which they excel at exceptionally well.
At Hope’s Peak Academy, students were chosen for their extraordinary skills, talents that set them apart from others due to their remarkable proficiency in these areas.
As a gamer, let me tell you, I wasn’t your ordinary student when I found myself enrolled in this school. Unlike my peers, I didn’t earn my unique title through skill or merit. Instead, luck drew my name from a hat, labeling me as the “Ultimate Lucky Student.” That’s who I am, Makoto Naegi.
Among his peers, Makoto’s abilities, while impressive and somewhat useful, are not particularly exceptional or unique.
Or:
Makoto’s talents, though notable and somewhat helpful, pale in comparison to those of his contemporaries.
Both sentences convey the same idea, but the second one is a bit more concise and easier to read.
Regardless, it’s always him who assumes leadership during each probe when one of his peers meets an unfortunate end. You know, even the most downtrodden student can rise above adversity.
8. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Once A Rookie, Always A Rookie
Right from the outset of his initial courtroom appearance in the original Ace Attorney series, it’s evident that rookie lawyer Phoenix Wright is not being given much credence by those around him.
1. He’s always seeking guidance from his mentor, his adversary, the prosecutor, views him as an insect to be squashed, and the judge shows strikingly short temper with him.
2. He frequently seeks counsel from his mentor, his rival prosecutor sees him as a pest to eliminate, and the judge exhibits unusual impatience towards him.
3. He often looks for advice from his mentor, the opposing prosecutor considers him as something small to trample, and the judge shows unusually little tolerance for him.
4. He’s constantly seeking advice from his mentor, the opposing lawyer sees him as an annoyance to eradicate, and the judge displays unusual lack of patience with him.
5. He is always asking for suggestions from his mentor, the other prosecutor views him as a nuisance to eliminate, and the judge shows a striking shortness of temper with him.
Despite his uncertain demeanor, Phoenix excels at orchestrating impressive reversals during mid-trial proceedings, maintaining an almost flawless track record.
Strangely enough, even with his wins under his belt, people never seem to regard him with greater respect. Interestingly, it’s only when he’s temporarily suspended from practicing law that he seems to hold the most sway in the courtroom – as a mentor rather than an active lawyer.
7. Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Adventures In Homelessness
Initially, Kazuma Kiryu, the main character from the Yakuza: Like a Dragon series, was just a common thug. However, there was an air of importance around him.
Compared to other characters, Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza: Like a Dragon starts off as an insignificant individual. Originally, he belonged to the lowest rank in the lowest clan, but his situation became even more dire when he was incarcerated.
Once Ichiban is released, no one appears to welcome him, leaving him without a home in the city of Yokohama. Despite his difficult situation, he maintains an optimistic and courageous demeanor reminiscent of a role-playing game hero.
With a warm grin and a touch of courage, he eventually found himself deeply involved in a significant criminal scheme on a national level within the organized crime scene.
6. Mother 3
Lucas The Crybaby
Right from the beginning of Mother 3, most people perceive Lucas as a lazy, tearful idler. Despite having caring friends and family, he fails to evoke any heroic image whatsoever in their eyes.
To give credit where it’s due, it’s important to remember that the child experienced a significant loss early in life – the passing of his mother and twin brother at a tender age. Such events can undeniably have an impact on one’s psyche.
His group of heroes, though somewhat rough around the edges, consists of a socially awkward princess, a thief with an unpleasant odor, and a canine companion.
Though he doesn’t appear to be the typical heroic figure, Lucas surprisingly prioritizes the well-being of his homeland and cherished ones, managing to hold back his emotions even when moved to tears.
5. Persona 4
Those Meddling Kids
Each of the games, Persona 3, 4, and 5, feature principal characters that are primarily youthful individuals. However, their positions within the group aren’t uniformly significant.
SEES is supported by a prominent company, while the Phantom Thieves benefit from Morgana’s advice and a broad circle of allies, known as Confidants.
Persona 4’s Investigation Team, on the other hand, are decidedly flying by the seat of their pants.
By sheer chance, Yu and the group uncover the link between the series of killings and the Television Realm. Although Teddie is skilled at navigating this Television Realm, he lacks insight into its underlying mechanisms.
It’s only through sheer pluck and persistence that these meddling kids solve the mystery.
4. Saints Row 2
New Saints From Nothing
In Saints Row 2, the story unfolds five years later after the events of the initial game. Your character emerges from a coma, triggered by an assassination attempt on Julius.
During that period, the 3rd Street Saints were no more, and other groups had risen to power in Stillwater, with the Ultor Corporation also exerting its impact.
As the newly crowned leader, I find myself in a tight spot, with scant resources to transform this once-notorious gang. All we’ve got is our tarnished reputation and a few random lieutenants snatched from the streets. It’s up to us now to turn things around.
Displaying sheer determination and a quick reflex, they alone confronted and overcame the formidable challenges of three violent street gangs and a powerful corporation, all while achieving victory in the end.
3. Tales Of Vesperia
From Punk Kid To Guild Hero
Initially, Yuri Lowell is introduced as a rebellious youth residing in the lower districts of the imperial city.
As a gamer, I don’t set myself any specific objectives beyond ensuring the safety of the lower quarters, and let me tell you, I’m not exactly on friendly terms with the Imperial Knights.
Upon someone swiping the lower quarter’s water regulating Blastia Core, I found myself unwittingly embarking on a thrilling nationwide pursuit to retrieve it.
His only initial helpers are a grumpy dog, a sheltered princess, and a goofy kid.
By a series of fortunate happenings, he and his budding group accidentally founded the defiant guild that eventually thwarted an unparalleled disaster threatening the world.
2. The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
“I Swear, I’m The Hero Of Time!”
In every Legend of Zelda game, it’s well-known that Link plays a significant role. But let’s pause for a moment and think about this from another angle, specifically focusing on Ocarina of Time. Here, Link is not just the main character; he’s the protagonist navigating through his world.
As I was idling about in town, a kid with a distinctive pointy-topped hat approached me, claiming to be the hero of Hyrule selected by a chattering tree. In all honesty, I would’ve dismissed his words without a second thought.
Throughout my initial stages of adventure, I’ve encountered several grown-ups and figures of power who thought I was merely fooling around instead of embarking on a serious quest.
He can demonstrate his sincerity about becoming a hero by backing up his words with concrete actions.
1. 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
A Genius, Junpei Is Not
In the year 999, when college student Junpei finds himself on a quickly sinking ocean liner, it’s clear that he’s in an unfamiliar and uncomfortable situation.
Amongst the participants of the Nonary Game, it’s particularly noteworthy that others possess either greater physical prowess or superior intellectual knowledge, in contrast to this individual.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to express that, despite not possessing the typical traits of strength and intelligence often associated with characters who drive a story forward, Junpei remarkably serves as the cornerstone for the game’s triumph in numerous aspects.
Showing swift wit and an eagerness to avoid a grim fate, he manages to secure the safety of most participants in the game. However, one or two individuals fell short of escaping unscathed.
