The Borderlands games have a large cast of characters, and fans have many favorites. While the latest game, Borderlands 4, added some new faces, it also meant saying goodbye to others.
Following the story of Borderlands 3, the team went their separate ways to look for Lilith. Now that she’s been located, any of those characters could reappear in future downloadable content.
While the ‘Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned’ DLC introduced Ellie into Borderlands 4, the game still offers a wide variety of other playable characters.
10. Sir Hammerlock
And Wainwright

Honestly, Sir Hammerlock is just always there in Borderlands. I’ve run into him in Borderlands 2, The Pre-Sequel, and now Borderlands 3 – he’s become a total series regular, which is pretty cool!
It’s a shame we didn’t see him in Borderlands 4, but it makes sense considering he’s happily settled down with Wainwright Jakobs after the ‘Guns, Love, and Tentacles’ story. Still, it would be great to hear how they’re doing.
They could either go see Lilith in Kairos, or relax at the Speakeasy. They both enjoy visiting spooky places, so either option would be perfect.
9. Athena
Out of Retirement
You may know Athena from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. She was one of the original four playable characters, and many players picked her because of her ability to throw shields.
By the end of The Pre-Sequel, Athena had been captured by the Crimson Raiders and was facing execution, but The Watcher intervened and saved her. Afterward, she decided to leave her life as a mercenary and start a relationship, settling down with her partner.
With The Watcher showing up in Borderlands 4, it’d be great to see Athena reappear. She was a key figure on Elpis, though she’s currently located on Pandora.
8. Fran
Business Consultant
To be honest, I didn’t really enjoy New Tales from the Borderlands, but I did find the characters memorable, particularly the Tediore Soldiers. Fran, the owner of a frozen yogurt shop with a bit of a temper, was one of the game’s main characters.
Though the characters in New Tales from the Borderlands all have their moments, Fran is particularly memorable. Considering the group finishes the game by launching a business consulting firm, it would be great to see them reappear in a future DLC for Borderlands 4.
Now that the Timekeeper is gone, I wouldn’t be surprised if their consulting firm got mixed up in some kind of trouble involving the vaults on Kairos.
7. Dr. Zed
Who Needs Healing?
Dr. Zed wasn’t a character you could actually meet in Borderlands 3 – he only appeared as his usual vending machines. The game didn’t explain why, but it’s believed the actor who voiced him was dealing with health problems during development.
Zed hasn’t appeared in Borderlands 4 yet, though his name shows up on vending machines throughout Kairos. It’s strange because he’s never actually been to that location, but future downloadable content might explain his connection to it.
Zed might be showing up to help Lilith; she seems to be in poor health after being trapped in the Phase Dimension for so long. It definitely feels like it’s been too long since we’ve seen him.
6. Mordecai
B-Team
The first Borderlands game featured a core team of four characters: Lilith, Mordecai, Brick, and Roland. They assisted the vault hunters in defeating Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2. However, in Borderlands 3, Mordecai and Brick were relegated to a secondary role.
Mordecai needs to come back, and it just doesn’t feel right without Brick. With Lilith finally free from the Phase Dimension, it’s odd that Brick isn’t around.
I think Mordecai will definitely help his friend. They worked together for years to rescue Pandora, so a simple phone call to see how she’s doing is the least he can do.
5. Salvador
Arms Race
Salvador is a popular, original character from Borderlands 2, often mentioned alongside Zero. Unlike other characters from that game who’ve continued to appear in the series, Salvador has mostly been limited to providing commentary.
The Designer’s Cut DLC for Borderlands 3 introduced a game mode called Arms Race, featuring Salvador and Axton. While it’s a somewhat silly concept, it’s a fun addition to the game, and many players hope to see a similar feature in Borderlands 4.
It would be amazing to see Salvador back in action, fighting alongside the new vault hunters in the arena. Let’s get this gunzerker back in the game!
4. Janey Springs
From Elpis to Kairos
It wouldn’t be right to talk about Athena coming back without also mentioning her girlfriend, Janey Springs. If you played the Pre-Sequel, you probably remember her – she’s the black market vendor.
I’m still obsessed with Janey and Athena exploring Pandora, it’s amazing! But honestly, Elpis will always be Janey’s real home, and it’s so cool how it was moved to Kairos at the end of Borderlands 3. It really opens up possibilities for where the story can go!
Considering what happened, I think we might see Janey return in Borderlands 4. Perhaps a distress signal led her to Elpis, and when she came back to check on the vault hunters, she discovered her home was gone.
3. Patricia Tannis
Another Siren
Patricia Tannis is the world’s leading expert on Sirens. She’s been a character in all three main Borderlands games: the first Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands 3.

Borderlands 3 showed that Angel passed on her Siren powers to Tannis, allowing Tannis to use the Phaseshift ability. Since then, Tannis hasn’t appeared in any new games.
Given that Borderlands 4 seems to be heavily featuring Siren powers and the Phase Dimension, I think a downloadable content expansion where players explore the Phase, guided by Tannis, would be a great fit.
2. Mr. Torgue
Explosions!
Mr. Torgue is a fan-favorite character in the Borderlands games. While he had a minor role in the first Borderlands, he became much more prominent in Borderlands 2, appearing throughout the main story and several expansions. He even showed up in Borderlands 3 to provide commentary for the Circle of Slaughter.
While his part in Borderlands 3 was relatively small, fans are eager to see him back in Borderlands 4. The game’s endgame could also use some improvement, and a DLC featuring something like the Circle of Slaughter – with Mr. Torgue leading the chaos – would be a fantastic addition.
Man, I’m hoping they release a little DLC pack with this guy, kind of like what they did in Borderlands 2 with the Wattle Gobbler. That Horrible Hunger pack was awesome, and I’d love to see something similar for this character!
1. Tiny Tina
More D&D?
Tiny Tina is a beloved character in the Borderlands games. She first appeared in Borderlands 2 as a helpful ally, and her popularity led to her own expansion, Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep.
People really enjoyed a particular character and the downloadable content featuring them, so much so that it inspired a full game, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Although the game wasn’t a huge hit, Tina’s unpredictable personality stayed true to form.
It’s disappointing that she wasn’t included as a playable character in Borderlands 4. A lot of fans wanted her to be a Vault Hunter, and since they’re planning to add one more, it would be fantastic if she returned as the Demolitionist. Even just seeing her and the rest of the B-team appear in the game would be great.
