10 Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy Tips for Beginners

The popular Final Fantasy series has brought its worlds together again in Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, a new game from Square Enix and NHN PlayArt. Set in present-day Tokyo, the game features 3v3 battles where players compete against each other and computer-controlled enemies in a large arena. Players fight to capture crystals and defeat opponents, but with so many characters and abilities available, the gameplay can be a little confusing at first.

Luckily, Dissidia Duellum lets you play in a lot of different ways and offers several modes to help you learn the ropes and improve your characters. These include unique challenges for each character and a relaxed battle mode. If you’re new to the game or thinking about trying ranked battles, here are some tips to help you get better.

Use Your First Free Roll to Get More Than One UR Ability

When you start playing Dissidia Duellum, you can reroll your ability draws as many times as you like during your first attempt. Take advantage of this! Aim to get at least two of the strongest, Ultra Rare (UR) abilities before confirming your results to maximize your power. The ‘Retry’ button is located right next to the ‘Confirm’ button, so keep an eye out for it!

When creating a character, keep rolling until you get one you’re happy with—preferably one that has one or two powerful UR abilities right from the start. This gives them a strong foundation for both quick wins and lasting progress, letting you jump into ranked play and start earning better rewards right away.

Pick a Character and Stick With Them

Once you’ve chosen a favorite character in Final Fantasy and built up their skills a bit, prioritize improving them further. Completing challenges specifically for that character in battle mode will earn you rewards like ability crystals, growth eggs, and draw tickets. These items can all be used to directly or indirectly strengthen your character.

Focus on upgrading the special abilities (UR abilities) equipped to this character – they significantly increase your stats. Keep in mind that each upgrade gets more expensive, so try to level them up at a similar pace. Once you’re comfortable with how the game works, try Season Ranked Battles. They’re similar to ranked modes in other online games and will reward you with points and prizes based on your final ranking.

Power Up Your Other Characters’ UR Abilities

Every character has unique abilities, and there are also four abilities anyone can use. Leveling up these abilities is important for improving your character’s stats. Abilities equipped in the Support slot provide half of their normal stat boosts, while abilities on your Main bar give you the full benefit.

Just like your main abilities, try to level up your support abilities at roughly the same rate. This saves resources and gives you more flexibility if you want to switch characters later on.

How far you progress in Ranked mode limits how high you can level up your abilities. Even if an ability can reach level 40, your rank determines the maximum. For example, if you’re in Bronze, your abilities will be capped at level 20; Silver caps them at 30, and so on. Since your rank resets each season, it’s best to spread out your ability growth evenly using growth eggs. Focus on leveling up abilities you use most often on your main ability bar first, then those on your support bar.

Utilize Elemental Bonuses When Possible

It’s not enough to simply improve your character’s abilities – their elemental type matters too. Every character is linked to a specific element, like Gaia with water or Cloud with earth. Using abilities that match a character’s element will give them extra stat boosts.

Look, I’m really into team building, and while matching elements can be cool, it’s way more important to make sure my characters have strong, well-rounded moves. Honestly, I’d never pick a move just because it has a certain element if it means passing up a really good Ultimate Rare ability or something that just fits how I like to play. A solid moveset for the character’s job is always the priority!

Don’t Forget About Job Medals

You can earn job medals by completing challenges and missions. These medals give your character stat boosts, and how strong those boosts are depends on the medal’s rarity, the job it’s for, and its color. When you equip a job medal, it’s chosen randomly, so aim for medals that best suit your character’s playstyle. For instance, characters who fight up close, like Cloud, benefit most from medals that increase attack power. Plus, you’ll get even bigger bonuses if your job medals share the same color – try to collect a matching set of three for the best results!

Use Burst Mode at the Same Time as Your Team

Unlike previous Dissidia Final Fantasy games, Dissidia Duellum‘s ‘Bravery’ system works differently. Players need to fill their Bravery meter to 9999 to activate ‘Burst’ mode. This is essential, because you can’t damage the boss at all unless you’re in Burst mode – it’s the only way to win!

During a match, you might be ready to activate Burst with full bravery before your teammates are. If they’re almost ready too, it’s best to wait and activate Burst together – having two or more players burst at the same time is more effective.

Dealing damage is boosted when two players use their abilities on the boss in quick succession – this is called a “Burst Chain.” Because these opportunities don’t last long, it’s important to make the most of them. However, if you’re ready to burst but your teammates aren’t fully powered up and don’t have an easy way to get there, it’s usually better to use your burst to damage the boss and avoid drawing enemy attention.

Use Your Lowest Cooldown Moves First During Burst

Your ‘burst’ damage phase lasts as long as you have abilities available. To maximize damage during a burst, time your abilities carefully. Always include at least one quick ability on your action bar to start the burst. After using all your main abilities, try using any remaining attacks from fastest to slowest cooldown. Even after your cooldowns are finished, you might still be in ‘burst’ mode for a short time – take advantage of this to use basic attacks!

While there are exceptions, generally starting with your fastest abilities is best. If a move significantly boosts your attack power, it might be worth using first, even with a longer cooldown. However, even if you won’t be chaining attacks together, using abilities with shorter cooldowns first ensures they’re ready when your main attack window ends and you need them for player-versus-player combat.

Split Up to Capture Crystals Faster (or to Defeat Opponents)

Traveling with your team is generally safer and helps you quickly capture objectives, but don’t hesitate to venture out alone sometimes. Quickly grabbing crystals ahead of the group will increase your team’s bravery faster and stop the enemy from taking control. Abilities like Minwu/Teleport, or anything that boosts your speed, can help you swiftly capture crystals and dominate the arena.

Honestly, one of the smartest things you can do is peel off and finish off anyone who’s limping away or clearly hurt. Taking down another player gives you all their Bravery, so if you spot someone vulnerable, go for it – but only if you’re not putting yourself in danger doing so. It’s a risk-reward thing, but a big Bravery boost is always worth considering.

Don’t Take on the Entire Enemy Team Alone

As a huge Final Fantasy fan, I’ve learned it’s all about teamwork! Seriously, always keep an eye on where your party members are. It sounds basic, but even at higher ranks – I’m talking Diamond and above in Ranked battles – people still mess this up. The biggest mistake I see? Trying to take on the whole enemy team by yourself when you’re separated from your allies. Don’t do it!

Focus on staying away from enemies and sticking with your teammates. Pay close attention to the minimap and your surroundings to avoid surprise attacks, especially when you’re trying to capture crystals or fighting the boss. Basically, stay aware of what’s happening around you!

If you get caught – and you likely will – use your defensive abilities and special, unblockable moves to either buy time or strike back. Each character has unique Ultimate Resonance (UR) abilities marked as ‘invincible,’ meaning you can’t be harmed while using them. Skills like Selphie’s Barrier or Minwu’s escape move can also help reduce damage or get you out of a tough spot quickly.

If you’re stuck with only damaging attacks and can’t escape, focus on dealing as much damage to an enemy as you can. A teammate might then be able to finish them off.

Don’t Hyper-Fixate on PvP

It’s good to fight opponents when you can, but don’t make it your main goal. The match has a time limit, and both teams lose if the boss isn’t defeated. Try to take out lone or damaged enemies when it’s safe, but avoid unnecessary fights, especially when your team is strong. Instead, capture crystals to boost your team’s bravery and concentrate on defeating the boss.

Like many games that combine player-versus-player and player-versus-environment challenges, success here depends on finding the right balance between fighting other players and working together to defeat the computer-controlled boss. It’s good to disrupt your opponents from quickly defeating the boss and grabbing resources, but make sure you and your team are still attacking the boss efficiently – time can be limited! Stay focused and keep up the pressure, and you should do well.
