Among these, the reboots that I’ve mentioned below stand out as exceptional examples of how to breathe new life into classic franchises without losing sight of their core essence.
Over time, the preferences and expectations of video game players shift and grow, and as a result, developers adjust their strategies. This may involve altering or reinventing well-known game series to meet these new demands.
Over time, numerous gaming series have evolved or refreshed their storylines, characters, and overall structure in order to attract new players or reignite interest among longtime fans. This transformation is often achieved through what are commonly referred to as “restarts” or “re-imaginings”.
Of course, these resets can go absolutely wrong, but they can also revitalize an entire saga, as demonstrated by the protagonists of our list of 10 game franchises with hugely successful reboots.
10 Devil May Cry
Dante’s Underrated Phase
Even though DmC: Devil May Cry initially faced criticism, it significantly revitalized the franchise’s online reputation and served as a groundbreaking hack-and-slash game that left an indelible impact on the subsequent installments of the series.

Originally, Interplay Entertainment and Black Isle Studios were responsible for creating the initial Fallout games. However, due to their monetary difficulties, Fallout 3 was taken over by Bethesda, who chose to employ their popular style from The Elder Scrolls series in its development.
In a significant departure from its predecessors, Fallout 3 underwent nearly complete transformation. The shift from an isometric perspective to a first-person viewpoint, and from turn-based combat to real-time shooting, transformed it from a more contemplative Role-Playing Game (CRPG) into a high-octane AAA shooter of its time. However, it retained many Role-Playing Game (RPG) elements as well.
To devoted enthusiasts of traditional role-playing games, this game fell short in preserving the legacy of its predecessors. Yet, it managed to gain global recognition and cement itself as a contemporary classic, appreciated for its immersive experience, compelling narrative, and exceptional music.
7 Wolfenstein
A New Order, literally
From the very beginning, the Wolfenstein series has consistently played a significant role in the world of video games, and Wolfenstein: The New Order serves as a powerful reminder to today’s gamers of just how accurate this claim is.
Despite being their initial venture, the backing provided by Bethesda enabled the team at MachineGames to develop an exceptional game, which became one of the standout titles in the entire series.
The reappearance of B.J. Blazkowicz, now a lethal mechanical entity, seamlessly aligned with the broader layout of each mission, evoking memories of Arkane Studios’ Dishonored series (both published by Bethesda).
This reboot not only set the stage, but ensured a strong foundation for every sequel that followed, thereby establishing itself as an unquestionable success.
6 Castlevania
A Much-Needed Revamp
For over a century, Castlevania has consistently launched fresh and updated editions each year. However, it was only with the release of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow in 2010 that the series truly embraced modern times.
By transforming its traditional 2D metroidvania structure into a more sequential hack-and-slash design, this revamp offers a fresh take on the story and delivers an all-encompassing experience that shines in terms of plot development, gameplay mechanics, visuals, and audio.
Working together with Kojima Productions, MercurySteam managed to create a stunning action game that reestablished the popularity of Castlevania, a move fitting for this long-standing figure in the gaming industry.
It may have dropped the ball with its sequel, but the first one remains a fantastic experience.
5 Deus Ex
Reboot And Prequel
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say Deus Ex: Human Revolution was my go-to when it came to reinventing an old classic. It aimed to revamp the gameplay for a smoother, more engaging experience, all while staying true to the intricate detail that made its predecessors shine.
Incorporating fresh characters and narratives while preserving the core mechanics that made Deus Ex legendary, this immersive game skillfully struck an engaging balance between accessibility and depth.
Indeed, despite its somewhat humorous finale, I must admit that the engaging plot, captivating environment, and ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ design make it a remarkable revival. We eagerly anticipate the next installment in the saga of Adam Jensen.
4 God of War
New Myths, Same Legend
Following the creation of an unforgettable video game trilogy, and producing what many consider to be the greatest portable games, Santa Monica Studio astonished everyone with the announcement of God of War (2018).
In their innovative approach, Kratos’ Norse adventure felt fresh and unfamiliar, not just for him but for us players too. The developers ensured that they fully exploited this fresh perspective.
Following multiple Game of the Year accolades, inventing a fresh exoskeleton for the series, and surprising us with an unforeseen episode in the life story of one of history’s most notable protagonists, it’s clear that the God of War reboot has more than demonstrated its value.
3 Resident Evil
Less B-Movie, More Horror
In a similar approach taken by numerous successful franchises over time, Resident Evil identified the need for fresh ideas in its established formula, resulting in the creation of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
Capcom carefully selected the most appealing aspects from earlier versions of the series and aimed to make this fresh release feel more contemporary, relatable, and engrossing. The outcome is a remarkable horror game that stands out among recent releases and marks a comeback for the franchise following a few challenging years.
Few reboots manage to eclipse the greatness of their predecessors, but it could be convincingly argued that Resident Evil 7 achieves this feat, standing out as the most impressive title in the Resident Evil series. Therefore, it’s highly recommended that you give it a play.
2 Tomb Raider
The Survivor’s Origins
In an effort to revitalize the brand and compete against Uncharted, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics reinvented Lara Croft’s story in 2013’s Tomb Raider, elevating the series to new levels of success due to its declining popularity.
The reboot of the series significantly revamped the gameplay, introducing survival aspects that provided a raw, intense experience, thereby captivating both new and old Lara Croft fans. With its ominous narrative, sophisticated cinematics, and adult themes, the reboot was an overwhelming triumph.
Tomb Raider also introduced a multiplayer mode, which, though not as strong as the main game, clearly indicated the developers’ desire to transition Lara into a fresh era. We’re confident that there will be more installments in Lara’s tale in the future.
1 DOOM
Rip And Tear
Among the top-tier first-person shooter games today, DOOM stands out as an exceptional model for creating a stunning remake while remaining true to its original roots in the series.
In this fashion, it delivers an intense, contemporary shooter adventure that’s equally violent, thrilling, and gratifyingly brutal, much like its predecessors.
As a gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the flawless execution of every element in this game. The gunplay is spot-on, the bosses are challenging yet satisfying to defeat, the enemies are diverse and engaging, the movement mechanics are smooth as silk, the level design is intricate and immersive, the storytelling is captivating, the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful, the graphics are nothing short of stunning, and the special effects are mind-blowing. This game is perfection personified, with no oversights to be found.
Given that it resulted in the undeniably outstanding DOOM Eternal, another exceptional first-person shooter game, we can confidently say it was an exceptionally successful reboot that will indelibly reside in our memories without a rental fee.
