The Nintendo Switch 2‘s presentation was overflowing with unexpected revelations. Although fans had been speculating about the confirmation of rumored features like the Joy-Con 2’s mouse capability, nobody anticipated the unveiling of a completely new game from Hidetaka Miyazaki, directed by FromSoftware, which will be exclusive to the upcoming Nintendo console.
It was quite unexpected that on the debut day of the new Nintendo Switch console, Nintendo Switch Online would incorporate a GameCube library, available only to those who subscribe to the NSO Expansion Pack on the Nintendo Switch 2. To start, three games – Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soul Calibur 2, and F-Zero GX – will be released initially, with more such as Super Mario Sunshine, Pokemon Colosseum, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance expected to follow at a later date. This collection offers plenty for fans nostalgic for the GameCube era, but there are many other titles from that console that Nintendo could consider adding in the future.
Games That Need to be Added to Nintendo Switch 2 Online‘s GameCube Library
Super Smash Bros. Melee
When reminiscing about the GameCube’s collection of games, there are typically three that shine as the cream of the crop: Metroid Prime, Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Metroid Prime received a remaster for the Switch a few years back, while Zelda: Wind Waker will be available on the GameCube library of the upcoming Switch 2 at launch. However, Super Smash Bros. Melee currently lacks a new platform, as its 25-character roster falls short compared to that of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Despite this, Super Smash Bros. Melee is still widely regarded as one of the greatest fighting games ever created, and it would seem inadequate for the NSO’s GameCube library without its inclusion.
Animal Crossing
The Animal Crossing series has never been more well-loved, thanks largely to New Horizons. It might be interesting for fans to trace the origins of this beloved franchise back to its early days. Although the gameplay may not be revolutionary, the delightful appeal of Animal Crossing remains compelling even after over two decades.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
The game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess came out on both the Wii and the GameCube. However, even though the Wii is the more advanced console, many fans argue that the version of Twilight Princess for the GameCube is better, since it was specifically designed with that system in mind and doesn’t require players to use motion controls.
As a devoted fan, I can hardly contain my excitement with “Zelda: The Wind Waker” gracing NSO’s GameCube library at launch. However, with whispers of remasters for both “Wind Waker” and “Twilight Princess” swirling around, it appears that these might just be dreams yet to materialize. If so, a straightforward emulated port of the enchanting “Twilight Princess” could very well be the next best thing!
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2
Nintendo often finds it challenging to incorporate licensed games into their NSO (Nintendo Switch Online) library, as was demonstrated with past titles like “GoldenEye 007”. However, considering the high praise that “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2” has received for being not only one of the greatest GameCube games but also one of the best “Star Wars” games ever made, it seems worthwhile for Nintendo to make an exception.
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Seven years following “Mario Kart 64,” “Mario Kart: Double Dash” is considered one of the more debated games within the series. Initially, critics had concerns about its limited gameplay and fans were frustrated with its assortment of experimental features, such as the double-rider aspect. However, with a span of 22 years and four mainline sequels, “Mario Kart: Double Dash” now offers a unique, invigorating gaming experience due to its innovative design.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Among the most debated remakes ever made, “Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes” is essentially the GameCube revamp of the 1998 “Metal Gear Solid.” This updated version features entirely reworked gameplay and cinematics. While many fans argue that it strays too far from the original, they still acknowledge its quality as a standalone game. As “Twin Snakes” is exclusive to GameCube, it can be quite costly to obtain, making it an exciting prospect if it were to appear on the rumored Switch 2.
