The Original Gaming Jerk
One classic instance of a game subtly criticizing players goes as far back as 1984’s Duck Hunt on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
If you’re deeply involved in the gaming world, you’re likely familiar with this scenario: when you don’t hit a target (like a duck), your virtual hunting dog will pop up from the grass, seeming to chuckle at your mistake.
For many years, the dog has been widely disliked, often appearing in memes and animated images that express frustration or anger.
In an amusing twist for the Duck Hunt arcade spinoff, titled Vs. Duck Hunt, it’s possible to aim at the dog instead of the ducks. When hit, he’ll sport a humorous soot-stained appearance. Limping along with crutches, he’ll encourage you to target the ducks rather than him.
9. Space Quest
The Narrator Does Not Like You
Sierra cleverly emphasized the phrase “save early, save often” in their games since you could find yourself only one action away from an abrupt, harsh demise in nearly all of them.
In contrast to many Sierra games, the Space Quest series often featured a narrator who provided commentary, while most other Sierra games allowed the games’ elements to speak for themselves.
In each Space Quest adventure, the narrator would always make a witty remark whenever you died. These comments ranged from questioning why you even got up in the morning, to advising you to employ your radar to dodge obvious crashes, among other humorous remarks.
If the storyteller didn’t make a witty comment about how you died, they would instead praise you for participating in the game and say that your play was “quite entertaining.
8. Batman: Arkham Asylum
Sassed On Your Deathbed
In the world of Batman, it’s rare for his numerous adversaries to truly have him under their control. Over long periods, these villains may have pondered over their lines, and in Batman: Arkham Asylum, they finally get an opportunity to express them.
Every time Batman is defeated, there’s a short scene where the most menacing villain at that moment stands triumphantly over Batman, reveling in their victory.
Characters like the Joker and Harley Quinn delight in telling jokes, Killer Croc is known for his voracious appetite, the Scarecrow often discusses fear in a thoughtful manner, and so forth.
As I dive into the DLC missions, stepping into Joker’s shoes, it’s a stark shift. Before being whisked away, Batman and Cash scold me, reminding me of my confinement in my cell once more.
7. Total Distortion
A Song Before You Go
1995’s “Total Distortion” was a mind-bendingly strange game for me as a gamer, set in a realm fueled by the rhythm of music and the symbolism of rock icons.
Without a doubt, music is integral to almost every facet of the game, even influencing the moment of your demise.

In every death situation, you hear the same tune. However, should your demise be at the hands of a Guitar Warrior, they’ll open their mouth to harmonize with the song.
6. Team Fortress 2
Every Merc Has Something To Say
In the game Team Fortress 2, each of the nine hired guns on a team can be described as somewhat eccentric gentlemen. They’re proud of their work and don’t shy away from a good laugh when things go their way.
Each class features distinct sounds that play whenever they eliminate other players, and some classes even have extra sounds depending on the items they are carrying.
For an added layer of irritation for gamers, getting continuously slain by the same player triggers the well-known Domination theme, which additionally boasts distinctive voice lines for each character class.
It’s enjoyable to give it to others, but incredibly frustrating when you’re the one dealing with it yourself. (Here, “it” refers to a situation or problem.)
5. Borderlands 2
Passive-Aggressive Marketing
In the game Borderlands 2, the planet Pandora has numerous strategically placed Revival Stations. When you meet your demise in the game, these stations can restore your character at a cost.
Indeed, these stations are operated by the Hyperion Corporation, a business entity that might not necessarily align with your values or ideals, but is more than willing to accept your patronage.
Whenever you’re reawakened, the device’s automated voice will offer comments that subtly convey irritation. Examples might be, “The Hyperion Corporation hopes none of that was your doing” or “Many thanks, do try dying again.
It’s annoying, but it’s the only resurrection biz in town, unfortunately.
4. Quantum Conundrum
Think Of The Things You’ll Never Do
In the game Quantum Conundrum, the main character is merely a 12-year-old boy, who, given his age, has yet to experience many aspects of life. If he were to trip, be squashed, or meet an untimely end while exploring for his uncle in various humorous scenarios, he would unfortunately miss out on more experiences.
In Quantum Conundrum, upon your demise, you’ll encounter one of several items or sensations that you’ll never have the chance to enjoy again.
From my perspective, this encompasses a mix of joyous moments, such as discovering genuine love or the emergence of my first chest hair, and challenging experiences, like failing to meet mortgage payments or spending an extended period in sweatpants – four whole weeks!
Some are more direct insults, like “not peaking at ten” and “not failing.”
3. Hades
Hypnos Is Just Trying To Help
In the world of Hades, death is an inevitable aspect of life, and it’s no different for Zagreus when he meets his end. Consequently, upon being slain, Zagreus is always welcomed to the House of Hades by Hypnos.
Hypnos’ list reveals the cause of your death, and he provides some less-than-perfect guidance on how to avoid a similar fate in the future. He’s not intentionally being indirect or rude; rather, he’s exhausted and overwhelmed, and his words may not always be well thought out.
Humorously, even once the game’s narrative concludes, there are still numerous jokes at your expense. Each time you manage to reach the surface, the narrator reminds you that Zagreus will meet an absurd demise, such as falling off a cliff or being run over by a chariot.
2. Cuphead
Insulted With Rhymes And Puns
In the game Cuphead, the different bosses you fight aren’t particularly fond of the two porcelain characters. This isn’t surprising, given that you’re there to defeat them and collect their souls as a favor for the Devil.
When Cuphead, Mugman, or Ms. Chalice lose a fight, you’ll see a screen where the boss delivers a witty remark.
Apart from delivering a witty blow for your mistake, many of their comebacks incorporate rhyme or wordplay, making the insult even more cutting.
For added variety, each boss possesses a collection of witty remarks, one for every stage of combat. Regardless of whether you successfully navigate a difficult phase, they always have more sharp comments ready to fire off.
1. Elden Ring
“Put These Foolish Ambitions To Rest”
In the world of Elden Ring known as The Lands Between, most inhabitants possess limited consciousness and have no capacity for speech. Consequently, when a player character dies in the game, it often occurs without drawing much attention or response.
An exception occurs when you perish during a battle with one of the game’s significant bosses, often one of the Great Rune bearers.
Or more casually: If you kick the bucket in a fight against one of the major bosses in the game, it’s typically one of the Great Rune holders.
Every time the higher-ups belittle you, they’ll throw in a dig at your capabilities. Godrick will dismiss you as unworthy for any tasks, Messmer will deliver a broad insult towards all the Tarnished, and Melania will simply introduce herself with her name and title, implying that she’s far superior to you.
