There’s an appeal in occasionally stepping away from the hustle of keeping up with the newest gaming fads and exploring familiar territory. For myself, that sanctuary is found within the realm of World of Warcraft, though each person may have their own preferred comfort game.
These are the timeless games that continue to captivate us, regardless of age. We’ve immersed ourselves for countless hours within their intricate universes, developing affection for their characters. We could recite every word spoken by heart and even navigate the game without sight.
Most impressively, these games provide an outstanding blend of limitless play opportunities and adventures that never grow old on us. Therefore, if you’re seeking quality entertainment that offers a bang for your buck, these are the games worth immersing yourself in.
10. The Civilization Series
Civ 4, Civ 6, don’t matter
In the realm of the popular game series, “Civilization”, players often find themselves saying they’ll take just one more action or round during a game, only to eventually sign off after that.
People who have experienced playing the game Civilization (Civ) readily comprehend the reason. It’s not merely the capability to deploy nuclear weapons as Gandhi that makes it appealing; rather, it is the vast strategic depth embedded within the gameplay that truly captivates players.
Each move requires careful consideration, as you need to balance immediate actions with long-term plans, all the while staying aware of the actions of every other civilization within the game.
Are we forming alliances, setting up trading paths, or should we consider conquering them for their resources instead? Time seems to fly by as we plan, with six hours passing in what feels like a moment.
9. Cities: Skylines
The premiere city builder
Despite the SimCity series taking a break following the disappointing release in 2013, Cities: Skylines has stepped up to provide an enjoyable alternative.
As a dedicated gamer, I must admit that the much-anticipated 2023 sequel didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. But let me tell you, going back to the original 2015 release has been a refreshing experience that’s still very much worth my time. The nostalgia factor is strong with this one!
This is the city-building game we’ve long envisioned. From our modest beginnings to constructing and overseeing an expansive, bustling metropolis, the one shortcoming of Cities: Skylines is that it devours all your spare moments.
Even though it is a decade old, the game boasts a thriving mod community, ongoing support, and substantial downloadable content expansions, providing an abundant gaming experience.
8. World of Warcraft
Thousands of hours and counting
Twenty years and over 10,000 hours later, I’m still playing World of Warcraf t.
Over time, I’ve noticed that my favorite MMORPG has been evolving with the times. It’s been introducing more user-friendly quality-of-life improvements and even incorporating aspects from the Action RPG (ARPG) genre to enhance gameplay experience.
In its latest update, titled “The War Within“, while it does have some imperfections, it provides a wealth of activities for enthusiasts to explore and engage in, such as acquiring mounts, customizing appearance with transmog outfits, participating in top-tier raids, taking on challenging Mythic+ dungeons, and much more.
Looking forward to the addition of player housing in the upcoming expansion, we’re all geared up to invest another 20 years and 10,000 hours into the world of World of Warcraft. And if you’re like me, you’re more than happy revisiting the Classic WoW adventure.
7. Diablo II
Still the best
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say that even with the release of Diablo III and more recently, Diablo IV, the original Diablo II continues to captivate me. It’s like an old friend that just refuses to fade away.
In 2012, Blizzard took advantage of the massive popularity of Diablo II by officially launching Diablo II Resurrected, a remastered version of the beloved Action RPG. This gives those who have spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours playing the game an opportunity to rekindle their love for Diablo II.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled that there aren’t any changes to the gameplay – instead, it’s all about enhancing the visuals and audio! It’s still the classic game we cherish, and I can’t wait to dive back in for countless hours of fun.
For numerous players, this stands as the zenith of Action Role-Playing Games (ARPG), offering a refreshing sense of continuity as Blizzard preserves the fundamental gameplay mechanics intact.
6. Baldur’s Gate 3
One playthrough alone is 200+ hours
2023’s best game of the year grabs hold of you and refuses to let go.
Regardless of the fact that you’ve invested countless hours playing through once, there remains an abundance of content yet to be discovered.
On numerous occasions, friends have shared with me instances where they found something novel during their fifth or sixth gameplay sessions, and it’s worth noting that this barely touches upon the vast array of discoveries that can be made within the game.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, one could immerse oneself in the tales of each character or repeatedly experiment with various narrative and dialog choices, making it a game that offers endless entertainment without ever becoming monotonous.
5. Final Fantasy XIV
Arguably the superior MMORPG
As a dedicated enthusiast, I typically bypass the narrative details in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) to swiftly reach the endgame. What truly ignites my passion are the high-level dungeons and raids.
One cause for this is that the storyline in many MMOs tends to be weak, but that’s not true for Final Fantasy XIV. In fact, its narrative stands out even within the realm of gaming, regardless of genre.
To put it simply, Square Enix has truly outdone themselves by completely revamping the game after the unfortunate debut of the initial Final Fantasy XIV.
In a new iteration, they’ve constructed an engaging universe that invites discovery. Their advancements in overall enhancement have streamlined the process of sampling diverse career paths (occupations or classes).
4. Monster Hunter World
Hunting we will go
Just like numerous others, I found myself immersed in the world of Monster Hunter World – a game that served as my initial foray into the genre. Spending numerous hours engrossed within its depths left me pondering over what I might have been missing out on for so long.
The “Monster Hunter” series excels at creating an engaging atmosphere centered around every facet of the hunting experience.
Absolutely! The excitement of going head-to-head with towering beasts is undeniable, but the process of chasing and locating these titans is equally captivating.
The game provides an outstanding blend of exploring, probing, and interacting with these beasts. Continuous action games can become monotonous after extended hours of play, but that’s not true for Monster Hunter World. I’m eagerly anticipating Monster Hunter Wilds.
3. Persona 5 Royal
Beneath the mask
One of the best JRPGs ever made, Persona 5 Royal is the definitive version of Persona 5.
Absolutely! You’re looking at more than 100 hours of playtime, but given how delightful the gaming journey is, you might find yourself eager to replay it multiple times.
While it may not provide the same variety of storylines as Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s often the case that a single playthrough of Persona 5 doesn’t allow for experiencing everything. Returning to the game offers an opportunity to explore new paths and options.
2. Minecraft
Endless Creativity
It’s undeniable that Minecraft has significantly influenced the world of video games, paving the way for the rise of the crafting game category.
It’s astonishing to realize that this game has been around for more than a decade, considering how dedicated fans have likely invested countless hours playing it.
In a simple and engaging manner: Minecraft thrives by offering a wealth of choices for players to enjoy it according to their preferences. It goes beyond mere crafting and extends into the game’s survival mode, hardcore mode, and numerous other creative possibilities at your fingertips.
As you delve deeper into the world of Minecraft, you’ll continually discover fresh activities to engage in, ensuring countless additional hours of captivation.
1. Stardew Valley
Down on the farm
Exciting tidbit for enthusiasts of Stardew Valley: creator ConcernedApe hints at potential content creation for the game spanning the subsequent five decades.
Regular improvements keep players deeply immersed in the game “Stardew Valley,” as we find ourselves happily dedicating countless hours to tending our virtual farms. With fresh content consistently added, it becomes simpler to overlook our pile of unfinished tasks.
Whenever I find myself craving a deeper experience in comfy gaming genres, Stardew Valley never fails to deliver fresh surprises.
