Key Takeaways
- Playing as the monster can be fun. Try games like Prototype, where you have supernatural powers.
- Ape Out is a unique top-down indie game where you play as an Ape who can explode enemies by punching them.
- Dead by Daylight offers a unique 4v1 multiplayer experience where one player is the killer.
As a seasoned gamer with decades of gameplay under my belt, I can confidently say that these games are absolute masterpieces, each offering a unique twist on the genre.
In many games, players typically assume the role of a protagonist with a heroic task. However, it turns out that taking on the antagonist, or “monster,” in some games can be an incredibly enjoyable experience as well!
If you’re yearning to swap bravery for sharp claws, check out these exceptional games where you can transform that desire into a reality!
10 Prototype
Superpowers Are A Blessing And A Curse
In “Prototype,” you embark on an exciting journey through an open world as Alex Mercer, a man endowed with extraordinary supernatural abilities. Despite his human appearance, he’s actually been affected by the Blacklight Virus, which has obliterated any semblance of humanity within him.
The Blacklight Virus endows Alex with the capacity to transform various parts of his body, such as his fist into a sharp, edged extension. In essence, Prototype resembles a “Venom-like simulation, and it’s as enjoyable as you might imagine. With some skill development, you can pull off extraordinary maneuvers using your powers and even confront large groups with ease.
Alex also has crazy traversal abilities, making getting around New York City a breeze.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve found Prototype to be a breath of fresh air in the realm of open-world games, even though its narrative occasionally misses the mark and feels a tad awkward.
9 Ape Out
I Wish I Could Shove Like That
In simple terms, “Ape Out” is a unique indie game where you take on the role of an ape attempting to break free from captivity. The visual in the screenshot might seem peculiar since the game is presented from an overhead viewpoint.
Instead of confronting armed sentries or returning their kindness with a firm push, it strangely happens that adversaries burst upon impact when struck forcefully. In addition, it’s possible to seize guards and utilize them as protective barriers.
The chaotic violence in this game is set against an unexpectedly fitting Jazz soundtrack, making it seem strangely appropriate. The odd amalgamation of concepts found in Ape Out results in an unconventional gaming experience where players get to embody a destructive monster.
The game further demonstrates that Devolver Digital consistently publishes exceptional, distinctive indie games among the finest.
8 Aliens Vs Predator
Whoever Wins, We Lose
Say what you like about the movies, but the premise of Alien Vs Predator makes for some incredible games.
In the game “Aliens vs Predator,” developed by Rebellion Developments, you’ll find three distinct storylines, one for each character. While humans aren’t the main focus in this list, it still offers an engaging sci-fi shooting experience. What sets this apart is that you can take on roles as both the renowned Alien and Predator, each with unique control schemes and special abilities.
The Alien moves with remarkable agility, necessitating an active hunting strategy to catch its victims. Meanwhile, the Predator, while slower, boasts advanced weaponry that can be relied upon heavily.
I’m quite fond of classic shooter games from the Boomer era, including the ’90s Alien vs Predator title. However, while I have a nostalgic affection for the original, the 2010 remake outshines it in terms of graphics and offers a more user-friendly experience.
7 Skul the Hero Slayer
An Adorable Anti-Hero
In the game titled “Skul: The Hero Slayer”, you assume the role of Skul, the last surviving member of the demon race, as hordes of heroes invade your territory. It’s a robust Roguelike with an intriguing concept.
In the game “Skul: The Hero Slayer“, the structure is that of a Roguelite, which means it has progress that carries over between games (meta-progression) and levels that are randomly generated. This ensures that no two playthroughs are identical, and with each loss, you become stronger.
Sadly, Skul may seem weak, but he possesses an extraordinary ability – he can switch heads with those he finds in the world, each one granting him special powers.
Abundant, less-than-subtle pop culture nods can be spotted, such as the Ghost Rider helmet bestowing a motorcycle upon Skul.
There’s no need to feel guilty for defeating the heroes. After all, quite a few of them are arrogant and boastful, so it’s just right that a humble servant like you should show them their place.
6 Maneater
They Grow Up So Fast!
In “Maneater,” you find yourself immersed in a straightforward tale of retribution that easily captures your attention. Here, you take on the role of a young shark who tragically loses its mother to a ruthless sea captain.
Life can be challenging for a young shark, facing threats from both larger fish and predators. But with resilience, you’ll grow strong enough to pose a threat to other sharks and even humans!
In this game called Maneater, it’s hard to stop playing because your character gets even deadlier with each victory, and you just can’t seem to get enough! The settings for these battles are quite diverse, and Tripwire Interactive definitely goes all out when it comes to the game’s over-the-top narrative.
Indeed, the captain appears to be truly wicked, leaving no doubt that he’s the true antagonist in the tale. However, given your actions, it seems fitting that you too have earned a place on this list as a ruthless and brutal figure.
5 Carrion
A “Reverse” Horror Game
Among many games listed here, I typically find myself controlling characters resembling humans or beings from reality. However, it’s refreshing to step into the role of something extraordinary like in Carrion, where I become an ominous, tentacled monster instead.
In a different phrase, “Carrion” is an enchanting 2D adventure where you’ll encounter ample opportunities for problem-solving, gore, and aggression. You assume the role of a unique predator species, effortlessly tossing hapless humans to your heart’s content.
Carrion exhibits a surprising level of complexity in this area, and it’s hard to resist its allure as it swiftly dispatches bands of armed soldiers with seeming ease.
In an unexpected yet seamless manner, Phobia Game Studio captures a sensation reminiscent of an agile octopus as you traverse through the game world. This feeling is particularly pronounced during the puzzle segments interspersed with combat, making exploration and problem-solving feel fluid and intuitive.
In “Carrion,” you get to play as the monster, and it shines as an excellent demonstration of the concept executed flawlessly.
4 Destroy All Humans!
A Sci-Fi Classic
In a popular open-world adventure game titled “Destroy All Humans!,” which was released in 2005, you assume the role of an extraterrestrial character named Crypto. Your objective is to save your species from annihilation. To accomplish this mission, you require human DNA, leading to a series of events that some might interpret as genocide.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, Crypto is the ultimate ally when it comes to battling in sci-fi landscapes. With an arsenal of amazing futuristic weaponry at my disposal, I can hurl enemies and objects skyward with ease using my telekinetic abilities or simply incinerate them with my trusty laser gun. In a pinch, I can always count on my jetpack to get me out of danger, and if things really hit the fan, I’ve got a UFO waiting in the wings!
Destroying groups of civilians is surprisingly pleasurable rather than it ought to be, and the absurd narrative has moments that are amusing in an oddly entertaining way.
Man, I’ve got to hand it to Black Forest Games – their 2020 remake is top-notch! If you’re craving more alien invasion action, there’s a sequel, Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed, that’s just begging to be played.
3 Dead by Daylight
A Multiplayer Masterpiece
Balancing isometric multiplayer (PvP) games can be a real challenge. However, it’s truly remarkable that Dead by Daylight has successfully achieved this feat and maintained a dedicated player base for several years.
In simpler terms, “Dead by Daylight” is a thrilling 4 versus 1 multiplayer game where one player takes on the role of a terrifying monster while the rest work together as survivors, aiming to make their escape.
In this game, you’ll encounter various monsters, each having distinctive playstyles and skills. On the other hand, players aren’t helpless as survivors; however, they need to collaborate effectively to achieve victory. And guess what? You also have the option to play as Lara Croft!
In my own words, “The game Dead by Daylight is most thrilling when played alongside a team of equally skilled players.” The challenge level might be high compared to playing randomly matched opponents, but it’s precisely this factor that keeps the game popular among its large player base.
2 Bioshock 2
A Gentle Giant
In contrast to the initial Bioshock game, Bioshock 2 represents a daring change of pace. The underwater city of Rapture is infamous for its fearsome Big Daddies, equipped with deadly drills. However, in Bioshock 2, you assume the role of one of these Big Daddies, offering an intriguing perspective into their worn-out lifestyle.
As a gamer, I find myself transitioning from fast-moving first-person shooter action into a more methodical, tactical shooting experience, complete with tower defense aspects. In this role, I assume the mantle of a Big Daddy, tasked with safeguarding the Little Sisters as they carry out their daily tasks. This innovative blend of gameplay mechanics is executed flawlessly, offering a truly unique gaming experience.
Give Bioshock 2 a chance instead of dismissing it initially. Trust me, it’s an exceptional game that allows you to take on the role of the monster and offers an impressive shooting experience – even without the remasters!
1 Left 4 Dead 2
Valve Does It Again
In a nutshell, Left 4 Dead 2 is an outstanding multiplayer horror title that challenges players as they fight off hordes of zombies and grotesque mutants.
The standout game from Valve has earned its place on the list since players can even take on the role of the Infected. It’s quite engaging to pursue armed survivors in this scenario, and there are numerous ways to customize your experience when playing as the Infected team.
As a gamer, I get the thrill of stepping into the shoes of various Infected units, ranging from formidable Tanks to cunning Smokers. Each character offers a unique gameplay experience and set of abilities. Unfortunately, I can’t personally play as the legendary Witch, but a skilled Infected player can guide unsuspecting survivors towards her waiting arms.
Left for Dead 2 can be enjoyable even when playing with strangers, but it’s truly a fantastic experience if you invite some friends to join you on this adventure.
