If you’re seeking a challenging gaming experience reminiscent of the past, you’ll find plenty of options available. It’s well-known that games from consoles like the PS2 and earlier were much more demanding than many modern titles. Some of these games are difficult due to mistakes during development, while others maintain their tough reputation.
If you’re looking for a 3D platformer or stealth game, here are some choices that might make even the most seasoned adults emotional. I’ve made an effort to diversify this list, so there should be something for every gaming taste. Enjoy!
10. Jak 2
Don’t Let The Visuals Fool You
The “Jak and Daxter” video games stand as esteemed representatives of the 3D platforming genre. At first glance, their captivating, alluring aesthetics might lead one to believe that the series is simple and approachable. However, while many games in the series can be completed with persistence, “Jak 2” stands out as the most challenging title in the series, and it’s not a small difference compared to the others.
Starting off our list is Jak 2, which stands out due to its relentlessly challenging platform gameplay and can be downright daunting if you’re not a seasoned pro within the genre. A significant factor contributing to the toughness is the scarcity of checkpoints, giving the impression that they were inadvertently omitted at times, resulting in many disheartening deaths.
In the game “Jak 2”, there’s quite a bit of trial and error involved, and you might need to replay later stages several times before you eventually emerge victorious. While I believe the game isn’t overly challenging once you understand the strategies, some players may find the frequent backtracking somewhat excessive.
9. Metal Gear Solid 2
European Extreme
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but sing praises for the Metal Gear Solid series on the PS2. These games are nothing short of extraordinary in the realm of stealth action, with narratives and an unparalleled attention to detail that only the genius mind of Hideo Kojima could craft.
In addition to its other features, MGS2 offers various challenge levels. While inexperienced gamers can complete it easily with the ‘Very Easy’ setting, those who wish to put Raiden through a tougher ordeal can opt for the ‘European Extreme’ level of difficulty.
It’s likely clear to you that European Extreme mode increases the difficulty of the game in all areas. This means that enemies can detect you from greater distances, and if they spot you, the game is immediately over.
On the easiest setting, Raiden fights three Metal Gear Rays. But on the hardest European Extreme setting, he battles a whopping 20! To have any chance of success, you really need to know the Big Shell inside out. The same challenging difficulty option is present in MGS3, but since I’m more familiar with MGS2, I’d suggest that game if you’re looking for a recommendation.
8. Devil May Cry 3
Ugh, Regional Differences
As a dedicated gamer, I must confess that I was taken aback to see “Devil May Cry 3” among the ranks. But here’s the twist – the game’s difficulty level seems to be influenced by the region you’re playing from.
If you reside in the United States, you encounter a significantly tougher version of the game compared to Japan and Europe. This is reportedly due to US audiences finding DMC 2 excessively simple. While the game remains enjoyable, this regional disparity is puzzling.
It’s quite amusing that, regardless of where you come from, DMC3 isn’t a simple game to conquer. Errors are harshly penalized, and the boss fights demand a lot of self-control for a game known for its flamboyant combat style.
7. Contra: Shattered Soldier
A Reputation To Keep
Back in the day, I was always sweating it out with the classic Contra games, known for their heart-pounding speed and merciless challenge. Those titles certainly honed my gaming skills during the ’80s and ’90s!
If you assumed that the series would have become more subdued over the years, prepare for a surprise, as Contra: Shattered Soldier maintains the same irritating nature as its earlier installments.

Interestingly enough, there’s an “Easy” setting available, but it merely extends the number of lives you have and offers unlimited chances to continue playing – it doesn’t fundamentally alter the game itself.
Funny enough, choosing the Easy difficulty level means you won’t be able to progress through the latter stages of the game, or complete it at all. If that’s not a wake-up call, I’m not sure what is.
6. The Getaway

The Getaway” is a thrilling third-person adventure game, deeply rooted in the UK, evidently drawing inspiration from films such as “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch.” Notably, it was exclusive to no other gaming consoles.
In “The Getaway”, the camera can be quite challenging to deal with, much like an experienced opponent. Similar to numerous 3D adventure games on the PlayStation 2, it frequently conceals items or areas from the player’s view.
As a gamer, when I find myself wandering without any heads-up display (HUD), I can appreciate the artistic decision, but let me tell you, it often leaves me feeling lost and navigating becomes quite the challenge.

5. Black
A Top-Tier PS2 Shooter
In the year 2006, towards the tail end of the PlayStation 2’s era, coincidentally when the PlayStation 3 was introduced, a game named Black was released. This game is recognized for its technologically advanced features, boasting stunning graphics and engaging gameplay. However, it has also gained notoriety for being quite challenging.
If you’ve never tried it before, Black is a challenging yet well-crafted single-player shooter that takes place in the present. The game offers rewarding destruction elements, but what truly makes it stand out are its formidable enemies and strategic checkpoint placements.
In the game called “Black”, your life can end swiftly, and a single risky shootout might lead to an irreversible spiral of events.
A slow and deliberate approach is ideal, but it can be hard to follow when you’re dealing with an unexpected loss. One memory that still stands out is my cautious journey through a cemetery, hiding behind tombstones. This scene, along with many others, makes Black an unmissable game, despite its challenging level of play.
4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

In other words, GTA: San Andreas is a top-tier game for the system, yet completing it isn’t something everyone can easily accomplish.
Like every GTA on the PS2, there are plenty of infamously difficult missions in San Andreas.
Regardless of how well-prepared you believe yourself to be or the amount of time you’ve invested in analyzing CJ’s statistics, a swift series of events can quickly diminish your advantage, leaving no room for escape.
After more than ten years, I vividly recall the exasperation I experienced when attempting the “Wrong Side of the Tracks” mission.
Your task involves attempting to neutralize armed personnel on a speeding train, all while pursuing it on a bicycle. The challenge can be more manageable if you explore unconventional methods, as it may require repeated attempts to succeed.
3. Simpsons Hit & Run
Easy When You Know How
The video game titled “The Simpsons Hit & Run” can be described as a highly-acclaimed, action-packed car game that unfolds against the well-known setting of Springfield. In this game, you’ll encounter all your beloved characters, and it’s divided into different segments where each character plays a significant part.
The game’s difficulty level is well-balanced, yet to stand a chance against the final act, you need to give it your all.
Each phase comes with its own deadline and demands perfection. Regrettably, the physics in “Hit & Run” for the PS2 are rather clunky, adding an undue level of difficulty to the gameplay.
In my experience, I’ve found that racing through “The Simpson’s Hit & Run” can be quite challenging, especially in the final region. It’s often more feasible to exploit a glitch and escape the boundaries instead of completing the tasks honestly! Despite its popularity and endearment, the game is notorious for having significant jumps in difficulty.
2. Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
An Underrated Capcom Classic
Maximo is a frequently overlooked treasure trove on the PlayStation 2, boasting a healthy dose of challenging gameplay that can be quite daunting.
Capcom developed the iconic “Ghosts and Goblins” game on the NES, a challenging 2D platformer that’s renowned for its tough difficulty. The game “Maximo” represents the series’ progression, offering sleek graphics in a merciless 3D environment.
Maximo exudes an impressive appearance in his centurion-inspired armor, but that tough exterior soon gives way to heart-patterned underwear following a few blows. The game is challenging due to the restrictive number of lives, which compels you to proceed cautiously as you discern your adversary’s abilities and vulnerabilities.
Maximo accidentally finds himself in a world reminiscent of ‘Dark Souls’, quite impressive given that the original was released nearly a decade ago. Notably, there’s also a follow-up titled ‘Maximo Vs. Army of Zin‘ as well.
