In even the most dismal, gloomy, and grim situations, there’s usually a pinch of humor or lightness. For video games, these lighter aspects might include secret endings, amusing scenes, or unexpected Easter eggs that seem out of place.
In even the most intense games, be they intense actions or terrifying horrors, these humorous instances may serve to reinforce the human aspect, or they could shatter our immersion, all in the name of a clever gag.
Here are 10 of the funniest moments in games that usually take themselves very seriously.
10.
Ellie’s Joke Book
The Last of Us Part 1
In a post-apocalyptic landscape overrun with fungal zombies, it can be challenging for humor to flourish. Yet, Ellie’s less-than-stellar joke book from “The Last of Us” serves as a valuable source of amusement in such a grim setting.
Occasionally, following stressful or intense situations, she often retrieves her joke book to fire off some of the most ridiculous one-liners at Joel – for instance, “A moon rock is tastier than a terrestrial rock because it’s meat-eor.
The situation is quite charming, a bit clumsy, yet irresistibly appealing. Witnessing Joel gradually embrace her quirky wit is a significant factor that makes their connection seem genuine. Even amidst the chaos of an apocalypse, simple humor continues to carry weight.
9.
Mordin Solus Sings Gilbert & Sullivan
Mass Effect 2

In Mass Effect 2, there are many intense situations and life-threatening decisions, but one unexpectedly amusing moment arises from an unanticipated character – Mordin Solus. This brisk-speaking, no-nonsense Salarian scientist hides a love for musical theater, and if you explore thoroughly, you’ll find him singing a reworked rendition of “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General.
Listening to this remarkably adept prodigy recite swift verses on biological concepts, extraterrestrial lifeforms, and combat strategies feels like striking gold. It’s strange, it’s unconventional, and it adds a priceless sparkle to an otherwise grave space opera.
It’s equally surprising when, in the context of Mass Effect 3, the character encounters an unexpected reminder of their affection for Gilbert & Sullivan – an instance that may leave them feeling more somber rather than amused.
8.
Hitler’s Bizarre Auditions
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein II is intense, bloody, and consistently grim – which makes its oddest moment stand out all the more. Around halfway through the game, BJ Blazkowicz winds up on Venus (you heard that right), attempting to try out for a Nazi propaganda film. The director of this production? None other than Adolf Hitler, aged, senile, robed, and clearly not in his right mind.
In simpler terms, his behavior is unpredictable and chaotic. He talks incoherently, occasionally urinates where he shouldn’t, loses temper to the point of attacking cast members, and then unexpectedly dozes off during filming. The entire experience seems like a surreal dream, alternating between terrifying and amusing moments.
However, nothing is quite as amusing as observing BJ maintaining his composure instead of lunging across the room to choke him immediately. Such restraint truly showcases remarkable self-control.
7.
Drunken Night at Kaer Morhen
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Even tough, no-nonsense men from the Wolf School, such as the Witchers, require some downtime occasionally. They appreciate an evening to unwind with friends and enjoy a drink or two… or more.
Before a pivotal moment in The Witcher III: Wild Hunt’s storyline, I found myself, Geralt, Eskel, and Lambert (and briefly, Yennefer), gathering for a casual drink-up. As one might anticipate, the evening spiraled quickly. We downed so many drinks that not even a witcher’s accelerated metabolism could keep pace.
Initially, it seems like an ordinary night. However, things soon spiral out of control. They don one another’s garments similar to Yennefer, Eskel vanishes mysteriously, and they engage in a mischievous act of prank-calling the Hierarch Hemmelfart during his private moment.
Occasionally, even the grimmest and most brooding fighters require a moment of light-hearted fun or relief, as humorously demonstrated by this unexpectedly heartwarming message.
6.
Arthur and Lenny’s Drunken Bar Escapade
Red Dead Redemption 2
In Red Dead Redemption 2, the game predominantly presents a somber, violent, and emotionally intense atmosphere; however, it’s moments like Arthur and Lenny’s evening out that serve as a delightful respite from this heavy tone.
Initially, it begins as an innocent round of drinks, but soon escalates into an uncontrollable, alcohol-fueled spree filled with singing, dancing, and some of the most memorable drunken dialogues in video games.
As a fan, I’d say the most captivating scene unfolds when Arthur, inebriated, roams the bustling bar, calling out “Lenny?!” to every stranger, convinced they’re his friend. The room seems to morph as he hallucinates, seeing Lenny’s face everywhere. It’s a whirlwind of chaos, laughter, and for a brief moment, it’s clear Arthur is living it up, enjoying himself before the world around him starts to crumble once more.
5.
Sanguine’s Drinking Game
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

It seems clear now that developers often find humor in portraying typically sober characters as being intoxicated, and to some extent, they might be correct about this being amusing.
As a Dragonborn gamer, I found myself accepting a boozy bet from an unassuming fellow named Sam in the game Skyrim’s “A Night to Remember” side quest. Before I knew it, I was waking up in a temple with no recollection of the previous night, and things only grew stranger from that point onwards.
At some point, it seems you’ve found yourself in quite an unusual predicament: You’ve apparently made off with a goat, entered into an engagement with a hagraven, and created turmoil that stretches across nearly half of Skyrim. The surprising revelation? Sam is none other than Sanguine, the Daedric Prince of Revelry, and this entire escapade was simply a grand divine pub crawl orchestrated by him.
It’s ridiculous, chaotic, and easily one of the funniest and most memorable quests in the game.
4.
Cloud’s Dress-Up Infiltration
Final Fantasy VII

As a gamer immersed in a game that’s got existential dread, eco-terrorism, and a planet-threatening meteor, one of the most absurd yet memorable scenes I encountered was… dressing up Cloud in women’s attire to sneak into a mansion.
To save Tifa from Don Corneo, the villainous crime boss in Final Fantasy VII, Cloud must disguise himself as a woman and gain the Don’s affection. This initially involved scouring Wall Market for makeup, wigs, and dresses; and, of course, participating in a squats competition with the muscular residents of the market.
The revamped version becomes more extravagant. Cloud’s transformation has escalated into the climax of an elaborate musical performance at a cabaret, featuring dance routines and dazzling stage lights. It’s flashy, eccentric, and undeniably memorable. A spectacularly over-the-top reimagining of a moment that’s been bringing laughter to fans for years.
3.
The Secret Cow Level
Diablo II

Diablo II centers on themes of darkness, conflict, demons vying for dominance, intense brutality, and even the occasional battle with axe-brandishing bovines – yes, you read that correctly!
Originally, The Secret Cow Level was a humorous online concept suggesting a hidden region populated by aggressive cows in the first Diablo game. In the sequel, Blizzard chose to incorporate this whimsical mayhem. Once unlocked, you’re confronted by upright, hellish cows, bellowing menacingly as they charge towards you, under the leadership of the foreboding Cow King.
The oddity of its appearance made it an instant legend, such that the “cow level” has been mentioned or reintroduced in virtually every product related to Diablo since then.
2.
Sergeant Johnson’s Secret Elite Hug
Halo: Combat Evolved

Typically, Halo delivers its action with massive explosions, heroic acts, and fierce space battles. However, should you conquer Combat Evolved on Legendary difficulty, the game surprises you with an unexpected, quirky, and humorous secret scene that is memorable within the series’ lore.
Instead of engaging in a fierce battle as the Pillar of Autumn explodes, Sergeant Johnson and a Covenant Elite unexpectedly opt for a peaceful gesture. Rather than exchanging gunfire, they choose to put down their weapons and, remarkably, embrace each other. The scene is devoid of conflict or turmoil. Their eyes lock, their weapons are discarded, and in the midst of the impending explosion, they share a quiet, intimate moment that feels out of place amidst the imminent destruction around them.
It’s bizarre, hilarious, and totally worth the pain of Legendary.
1.
The Dog Ending
Silent Hill 2

In simpler terms, Silent Hill 2 offers a chilling, gradual exploration of remorse, sorrow, and psychological terror, setting up the ideal backdrop for the humorous twist known as “The Dog Ending” to take you off guard.
Instead of revealing the truth about past traumas or hidden memories, James unexpectedly uncovers a concealed command center… but finds a playful Shiba Inu responsible for everything thus far – manipulating fog, creating monsters, and generating radio static. As if in a cartoon, a lighthearted tune plays and the scene transitions to James collapsing in dismay as the dog affectionately licks his face.
When the game ends and switches to a sequence of dog-related credits, you find yourself contemplating your achievements, wondering whether laughing out loud or getting frustrated enough to throw something at the screen is an appropriate response. Truly remarkable!
