In my humble opinion, it seems like these characters have led quite the tumultuous lives! From the scheming Preceptor Seluvis to the downright despicable Harvey, each of them has left quite an impression on their respective games and, unfortunately for them, on me as well.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge the immense talent required to craft a fictional character who resonates with everyone.
However, it takes an equal level of skill to make a character that is universally reviled.
There’s a difference between creating a character who is somewhat dislikable and one who is so intensely detestable that it turns into an enjoyable challenge.
Since JRPGs typically feature a large number of characters, they provide an excellent venue for finding the most despicable or inept among them.
If fortune favors you, you may engage these characters in a battle, but spoiling their day is equally satisfying.
10 Sugimura
Persona 5
In the game Persona 5, each Confidant has a secondary villain who creates problems for their friend, often leading to a transformation or change in the Phantom Thieves’ hideout, Mementos.
Among all these folks I’ve encountered, none has rubbed me the wrong way quite like Sugimura, the guy who’s betrothed to my pal Haru. He’s got a charm that’s hard to put your finger on, but it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth every time I interact with him.
Okumura intended to arrange for Haru’s marriage to Sugimura as a means of strengthening his business and political influence, and Sugimura found this attractive, expressing that a high school fiancée was “exciting” or “alluring.
In Okumura’s Palace, you can only confront a cognitive duplicate of him, which is unfortunate. However, it’s reassuring to know that the actual person will be definitively removed from Haru’s life by the conclusion of their Confidant.
9 Folie
Bravely Default 2
About halfway through Bravely Default 2’s narrative, you meet the mastermind behind the enigmatic events in Wiswald – a character named Folie, who possesses the Asterisk of Pictomancy.
For Folie, her art takes precedence over absolutely anything and everyone, even the health and safety of all residents in Wiswald.
In a chilling sequence of events, Folie orchestrates a string of disasters across various cities, claiming innocent lives and pushing people to the brink of madness, all in pursuit of new pigments for her artistic endeavors.
Her extreme lack of concern for her wrongdoings leaves Elvis at the brink of his limits, strengthening his determination to eliminate her danger permanently.
8 Prince Charmles
Dragon Quest 8
In the game Dragon Quest 8, the prince named Charles hailed from Argonia and was betrothed to Princess Medea. However, an unfortunate event transpired when Dhoulmagus transformed her into a horse.
For your information, his name is “Charm-Lay,” which might not be immediately obvious, given its unique pronunciation.
He’s a textbook spoiled prince, having lived life with everything handed to him. He has little-to-no sense of right and wrong or non-material value, and will run screaming at the slightest provocation.
It’s surprising that he, who rules over a society deeply rooted in lizard culture, is petrified of lizards himself. The group was asked to secure a giant lizard’s heart for him, as part of a royal challenge. However, he ended up failing the test by resorting to cheating.
7 Hojo
Final Fantasy 7
In the game Final Fantasy 7, Professor Hojo leads the Science Department of the Shinra Electric Power Company. He is often considered one of the most universally disliked characters within the entire series.
Stating that Hojo is without moral principles might even be an understatement; it seems like the idea of morality doesn’t cross his mind at all while he carries out his twisted scientific experiments.
In the game, Hojo plays a pivotal role, since his research led to the creation of the Jenova Project, SOLDIER, and Sephiroth.
Instead of other Shinra executives, who can justify their actions due to greed, Hojo appears to be on a path that could lead to planetary destruction, seemingly driven solely by scientific inquisitiveness with no apparent justifiable cause.
6 Seymour Guado
Final Fantasy 10
Master Seymour Guado is a significant character within the religious framework of Yevon in Final Fantasy X, and he’s known for his unyielding role as one of the game’s main adversaries.
At first glance, he appears friendly enough, but soon it becomes evident that beneath his public persona hides an individual deeply entrenched in nihilistic beliefs.
Seymour harbors intense disdain for existence itself, convinced that the people of Spira would find liberation from their pain if they all ceased to exist.
No matter how many times the party beats him down, he keeps popping back up, even defying death as an Unsent if it means “saving” (i.e. destroying) Spira.
5 Sota Kume
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, a consistent opposing power is Bleach Japan, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating the nation’s areas of legal ambiguity.
The leader of Bleach Japan’s Yokohama office is Sota Kume, a man often appearing haughty and unapproachable, as if he always maintains an elevated position.
Kume often creates problems for Ichiban and his companions by organizing unlawful demonstrations at their businesses, as well as secretly employing rough characters to scare them.
Although the organization gives an impression of ethical elevation, it appears that Kume prioritizes seeming morally upright over truly exhibiting good character.
4 Porky Minch
Mother 3
Back in Earthbound, I’ve always found myself sharing a border with this character named Porky Minch, or as some folks call him, Pokey. He’s the one who’d often drive me up the wall!
Despite being impertinent, selfish, and seemingly uneducated, this boy somehow charms his way into becoming the trusted assistant of Giygas.
Following Giygas’ downfall, Porky manages to flee across both time and dimensions, ultimately arriving at Mother 3’s Isles of Nowhere where he sets up the Pigmask Military.
The time-traveling process has severely aged Porky, leaving him ancient and bedridden. In spite of that, he still remains the exact same bratty, irritating child at heart.
3 Metal Face
Xenoblade Chronicles
In the game Xenoblade Chronicles, Metal Face serves as the initial encounter with a Faced Mechon. This particular Mechon is enigmatic and appears to possess sentience, making it resistant to the abilities of the Monado.
Metal Face consistently poses a menacing danger towards Shulk’s group, with ambitions to grab the power of the Monodo for his own selfish purposes, all the while causing them maximum harm and distress.
To clarify, Metal Face is actually Mumkhar, a soldier from Homs who previously fought with Dunban, the former user of the Monado.
Most of Mumkhar’s behaviors as Metal Face are driven by his envy towards Dunban’s possession of the Monado, an envy that also encompasses Shulk.
2 Preceptor Seluvis
Elden Ring
Most people who’ve sworn allegiance to Ranni the Witch in Elden Ring are valiant and upstanding characters, but Preceptor Seluvis stands out as an exception – and quite a significant one.
Seluvis, who has a fondness for magical puppetry, employs mystical concoctions to change unsuspecting individuals into lifeless, emotionless wooden dolls.
Even though Seluvis is one of Ranni’s servants, he harbors similar plans for her, and doesn’t hesitate to reveal his crude enthusiasm regarding the possibility.
Regardless of my approach to Seluvis’ quest, it always seems to be him who meets an unfortunate end, following Ranni’s command. Quite ironic, isn’t it?
1 Harvey
Octopath Traveler 2
Harvey is the antagonist of Osvald’s story in Octopath Traveler 2.
Similar to myself, Harvey embarks on a scholarly journey seeking the Ultimate Magic, yet his path has expanded beyond the traditional realms, making it somewhat less defined.
Feeling envious of Osvald’s rapid advancements in gaming, I decided to take drastic measures. I set fire to his house, taking the life of his wife in the process, all while making it appear that he was responsible for the crime. My plan was to seize his research and claim it as my own accomplishments.
It seems that Harvey anticipated Osvald might seek revenge if he had the opportunity, and to prevent this, he paid off the judges in Osvald’s trial to secure a prison sentence rather than a death penalty. This way, he felt he could boast about his deceit towards Osvald while he was incarcerated.
