It might seem unattainable, but determined individuals like independent developers have demonstrated that working single-handedly, or as we say, a “one-person team,” can indeed be successful, despite the numerous hurdles they had to surmount along the way.
For sure, going solo in game development definitely takes longer, but it’s those lone developers who have been able to craft games that were worth the wait and left an indelible mark on the gaming world. Their creations still resonate today. Shall we explore some of these remarkable solo projects?

It’s hard to discuss solo development without bringing up Minecraft, the highest-selling game ever, isn’t it? A lot of people might not realize that this gaming phenomenon started as a one-man project, spearheaded by Marcus Persson, a Swedish programmer who goes by the nickname “Notch”.
Initially, between 2009 and 2010, the game was single-handedly developed by its creator, Notch. This solo effort allowed him to amass sufficient resources to leave his day job and bring other developers and designers on board at Mojang Studios. From that point forward, a team worked on the project, but it all began with just Notch. A short while later, the game was launched, rapidly gaining worldwide popularity.
Given its status as one of the most prosperous game franchises within the industry, we felt compelled to acknowledge Minecraft’s roots which stem from solo development. Hence, we made sure to include it in our ranking, albeit positioned slightly lower than others with more robust content pertaining to this topic.

Joakim decided to independently design a complete game, starting from scratch, with the aim of bringing it to fruition all by himself. This amalgamation culminated into an impressive platformer (some might describe it as having a metroidvania feel) that required seven years to complete.
Back when it first dropped, this game was hailed for its uniqueness and richness, but there were some who felt the narrative and combat weren’t always consistent. Still, with the passage of time, it’s become a modern classic. Let me tell you, I’m still blown away by the fact that just one person came up with those mind-blowing boss designs and battles. They are hands down among the best 2D fights I’ve ever encountered.

A Surreal Classic World

For several years, Éric Chahi was employed at one of France’s renowned development studios from the late 80s, Delphine Software. Here, he honed his skills in graphics, animation, and programming. Then, an idea struck him: why not develop his own game?
As a gaming enthusiast immersed in the realms of both fantasy and sci-fi, I drew inspiration from epic tales like Dune, the chilling visions of John Carpenter, and the mesmerizing artwork of Richard Corben. This fusion led to the creation of Another World, a platformer that follows the journey of a hapless physicist who finds himself stranded on an alien planet after his experiment accidentally ripped open a space-time rift.
Over the course of two years, I single-handedly developed this game, pouring my heart and soul into every detail. However, when it came to the soundtrack, I knew I needed assistance from others to bring the experience to life in its full potential.
Back in the day, I was blown away by Another World. Its eerie vibe and simplicity made it stand out, earning it cult status and influencing many games that followed. It’s incredible how, over two decades later, its creativity still feels fresh. If you’re into sci-fi like me, this game is an absolute essential play.

Billy Basso (Animal Well)
A Well Built for Seven Years

Billy Basso, an accomplished developer hailing from Seattle, boasts a decade’s worth of experience under his belt, much of which was spent developing mobile games for a medical startup. However, his ambition yearned for something grander, leading him to embark on the creation of a game you might recognize: Animal Well.
Initially, Basso embarked on a short-term experimental endeavor, balancing it with his regular employment for financial reasons. However, as the project expanded substantially, he eventually dedicated all his efforts to developing the game that ultimately consumed seven years of his time.
Immediately upon its debut, the game Animal Well became incredibly popular. This intriguing metroidvania features sprawling, connected mazes and the freedom to explore in any order, all set within a peculiar well inhabited by various unusual creatures.
This game feels like a refreshing change for its genre, as uncovering its mysteries has given me an unexpectedly enjoyable experience recently. To be honest, playing this game will definitely alter your perspective on sausage dogs.

LocalThunk (Balatro)
One Dev For Many Jokers

Under the moniker “LocalThunk”, the creator and visual designer of Balatro assumed he’d only manage to shift approximately 10 games before returning to his usual day job. However, it surpassed that figure significantly, selling over one million copies and captivating card game enthusiasts globally.
2021 marks the commencement of Balatro’s development, a unique poker-themed game that offers an addictive and incredibly rewarding experience. The objective in this game is to construct a deck capable of generating high-scoring hands, enabling you to execute extraordinary combos and outmaneuver bosses during their blinds. It may seem somewhat unconventional, but that’s precisely what makes it so appealing! And that’s one of the reasons it stands out.
Initially, the game was a modest endeavor intended solely for companions. However, its immense potential couldn’t be overlooked, leading to its promotion by these friends and “LocalThunk” to introduce it globally. This decision catapulted Balatro into widespread popularity and recognition, earning it numerous accolades and a reputation as one of the most acclaimed card games in existence. Funny enough, I’ve clocked more playtime on Balatro than The Witcher 3.

I may have veered into philosophical territory, but it’s the thought-provoking nature of games like Papers, Please, one of my all-time favorite indie titles, that has me saying this.
The game revolves around twisting conventional concepts, making tedious bureaucracy an engaging experience through innovative gameplay. As a customs officer in the fictitious nation of Arstotzka, your role is to scrutinize travelers’ documents, determining who is permitted to depart (or enter).
This game presents a one-of-a-kind adventure as players are consistently confronted with ethical and political quandaries. For instance, they might need to choose between allowing an immigrant couple entry or denying them, which could potentially impact their ability to provide for their own family at the end of the day.
Lucas Pope, a seasoned developer who once worked at Naughty Dog before embarking on his personal quest to develop games independently, was the one behind all of it. Having worked on Uncharted, he found that he didn’t want to adhere strictly to set formulas and instead chose to create whatever ideas sprang to mind.
This resulted in the creation of Papers, Please, a game that received both critical acclaim and high sales figures, ruling supreme during the 2014 awards ceremonies for video games, and captivating gamers from various corners of the globe.

Yet, he persevered, and now we all can enjoy farming virtual crops and entertaining dreams of marrying Penny.
With jesting put aside, Barone initially coded games for amusement until an ambitious notion sprang up: to develop a farming simulation reminiscent of the cherished Harvest Moon series, despite lacking professional background in video game production. Thus, he secluded himself in his sanctuary and dedicated all his attention to crafting a game that eventually won the hearts of many indie gaming enthusiasts.
There’s something amusing about realizing the charm of Stardew Valley only when you start playing it. It’s an exceptionally engrossing and captivating game that players can’t seem to get enough of, often losing track of time. For instance, I found myself immersed for approximately seven hours during a hectic weekend, all in the pursuit of watermelons. And honestly, I have no regrets about it.

A Timeless And Unique Tale

Over the last ten years, if you’ve been anywhere but secluded, chances are you’ve heard about Undertale – an indie game that has earned unprecedented acclaim. I’m still in awe when I reflect upon the fact that Toby Fox, a lone developer, was responsible for crafting every aspect of this masterpiece – from the story and artwork to the coding and the enchanting soundtrack. It’s truly mind-blowing!
Let’s take a step back and delve deeper into his background. The venture we’re discussing, Undertale, initially began as a crowdfunding campaign. Remarkably, it surpassed its target by an impressive 1022%. However, the creator, Fox, chose to work independently rather than collaborate with others, preferring to navigate this creative journey alone, acting like a solitary wolf.
The experience leads to a game featuring a human child trapped in an underground realm filled with enigmatic creatures. The goal, as one might guess, is to return home, but the journey presents unexpected scenarios and challenges that creatively redefine familiar gaming tropes, giving off a distinct Mother-Super Mario RPG blend. This game, despite its basic mechanics, offers an incredibly engaging and enjoyable experience for all ages, even those who aren’t typically into gaming.
