As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I find myself constantly astonished by the games that slip through the cracks and remain obscure, hidden gems waiting to be discovered. These overlooked titles often hold more charm and innovation than their mainstream counterparts, offering unique experiences that leave a lasting impression on those who dare to venture off the beaten path.
One such game that has captured my heart is “Pokémon Rumble” for the WiiWare. As someone who grew up with the original Pokémon games, I was initially skeptical of this brawler spinoff. However, after giving it a chance, I found myself utterly captivated by its engaging gameplay and strategic elements that seamlessly blend the world of Pokémon with the thrill of beating down hordes of enemies.
The game’s Metascore of 59 is a travesty, as I believe “Pokémon Rumble” deserves recognition for pushing the boundaries of what a Pokémon game can be. It’s a shame that this gem remains largely forgotten, but for those who can track it down, it offers a truly rewarding experience that will leave you wanting more.
Now, if only Atlus had made it easier to play these underrated spinoffs… I guess I’ll just have to keep hunting for them like a rare Shiny Pokémon! 😉
Video game spin-offs can be unpredictable, as some popular series attempt to place familiar figures into new, diverse gameplay styles, resulting in mixed outcomes.
Many of them veered wildly astray, slipped into insignificance, or faced an unusually intense level of criticism, even though they were all generally solid games with unique qualities.
As someone who has been a devoted fan of various TV shows over the years, I’ve come across many spinoffs that didn’t quite live up to their potential or were unfairly criticized. These series have either fallen into obscurity or remain underrated and underappreciated, but in my opinion, they are definitely worth checking out. They offer unique storylines, memorable characters, and a level of quality that rivals some of the most popular shows on television today. So, if you’re looking for something fresh to watch, give these overlooked gems a chance – I promise you won’t be disappointed!
For each brand, I’ll focus on discussing just one game. Since franchises like Pokémon and Mario boast numerous spin-offs, I’ll select the one I believe has been underappreciated the most.
10. Mega Man Zero
What I’m Fighting For
Although Mega Man Zero isn’t a completely unknown spinoff series, much of what the Mega Man series produced during the 2000s has slipped into relative obscurity, regrettably including Mega Man Zero as well.
These games were amazingly engaging, as they allowed you to command Zero, featuring a fantastic progression system that levels up your character, and a more action-oriented fight style centered around melee attacks.
Among the top-notch action-combat platformers available is one that unfortunately often gets overshadowed by Mega Man X and fails to receive the acclaim it truly merits.
I strongly suggest you start with the initial game because the subsequent releases omitted the unique leveling system, which was an amazing way for players to showcase their individuality and creativity, making it incredibly appealing to me.
9. Mario’s Picross
Paint By Numbers
Picross, a franchise often overlooked, boasts some truly outstanding game design that doesn’t always receive the recognition it deserves, much like how Tetris consistently garners more attention.
Due to its limited recognition and the fact that it was primarily released as an exclusive for the Game Boy, Mario’s Picross is relatively unknown, yet it’s truly exceptional.
Mario isn’t the main focus here; instead, he serves as a setting for the intriguing Picross puzzles. These puzzles are designed to challenge your mind and provide an enjoyable gaming experience.
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve clocked in well over 200 hours in the timeless classic Picross, and let me tell you, even though it was born three decades ago, it continues to hold its own against today’s games. It’s still an absolute joy to play!
8. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
Necessary For The Lore
Kingdom Hearts is primarily composed of games that are essential to follow the storyline, making spinoff titles relatively rare within this series. In other words, if you’re looking for a complete understanding of the plot, it’s advisable to play most, if not all, of the games in the franchise, as they function more like RPGs.
In contrast to Melody of Memory, this game isn’t similar because it’s a rhythm game styled like Theatrehythm, in which you manage three distinct characters, making them fight in sync with the music on a road.
Despite seemingly being long past its prime, discussions surrounding this game persist among Kingdom Hearts enthusiasts due to its significant storyline elements that are vital for comprehending Kingdom Hearts 4.
Despite its relative anonymity and receiving quite a bit of criticism, this game stands out as exceptionally strong, boasting innovative mechanics and a vast library of excellent music.
7. Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon
A Puzzling Roguelite
Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon offers an enjoyable blend of puzzle-matching, roguelike, and adventure elements in a delightful chaotic concoction, making for an effortlessly fantastic gaming experience.
As a dedicated gamer, I find myself immersed in an intriguing puzzle game where I slice through foes of identical kinds, linking them together for colossal combos that wipe out the whole playing field. However, I need to stay aware of my health points to ensure my gaming journey continues uninterrupted.
I’m really fond of the Original Soundtrack; Jake Kaufman has crafted lively, jazz-infused, and powerfully energetic remixes that keep me captivated and make it hard for me to stop listening.
Despite receiving moderate critical acclaim, Pocket Dungeon was often seen as a casual mobile game by many players, which is unfortunate because with a little exploration, it proves to be an intense and enjoyable experience.
6. Metroid Prime Pinball
Funny, but Not Bad
In the context of video games, a pinball game within a hardcore, grungy first-person shooter franchise seems just as absurd as a virtual reality version of Final Fantasy’s fishing mini-game. Yet, strangely enough, both manage to be quite enjoyable.
Indeed, Metroid Prime Pinball is a game that has slipped into lesser-known territory due to its unique nature. However, let me assure you, it’s an exceptional pinball game, surpassing the quality of the boards in most recent Sonic games, for reasons that are not immediately obvious.
This game takes you on a thrilling journey through intriguing stage designs, where you gather various items, but chances are you won’t make much use of the built-in DS Tactile Feedback feature, which wasn’t extensively utilized beyond this title.
The game boasts impressive pinball physics, allowing me to execute most shots accurately. Additionally, the Metroid Prime visuals fit surprisingly well, and the music is unexplainably excellent.
5. Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Let The Slime Rain
In a delightfully fresh and distinctive twist on the beloved tiny character from Dragon Quest, Rocket Slime invites you to haul and traverse using your own strength, jumping and carting various items.
The primary mechanic of the game revolves around traversing diverse locations like caves, woods, and so on, while bouncing off adversaries as you go.
Using your elastic, blob-like form, you dart towards objects, scatter items haphazardly, and gather resources or retaliate against bosses in a chaotic manner, particularly during robot battles. This can get quite frenetic!
This game has an engaging story and delightful pixel graphics, making it a genuinely enjoyable experience. However, it somehow remained overlooked and was never released beyond the Nintendo DS, even though it received generally positive critic reviews.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Cadence of Hyrule
Under The Radar
In a manner similar to Sonic Mania, Nintendo allowed independent developers to contribute to one of their major franchises, but it seems that the game Cadence of Hyrule has not received much attention or discussion in the past four years.
This game offers a unique, ailing beat-based roguelike experience similar to Crypt of the NecroDancer. Its outstanding music tracks complement the exploration and dungeon-crawling adventure it provides.
Regardless of whether you disable the rhythm mechanics altogether, it remains enjoyable as it transforms into a strategic game that requires strategic thinking and smart usage of your resources.
It strikes me as rather surprising that such an amazing game, enjoyable even for those lacking rhythm, resembles a cost-effective Nintendo launch on the Switch, and yet it seems to have fallen out of conversation.
3. Pokémon Rumble
Brawling Through Obscurity
Despite offering enjoyable brawling action with your quirky creatures, Pokémon Rumble has been rated with a Metascore of 59.
This game holds my attention much stronger compared to typical brawling games, due to its unique features like developing Pokemon, adjusting stats, and crafting an optimal strategy.
It’s akin to a superb blend of a well-crafted Pokémon RPG experience and the intensely gratifying gameplay of repeatedly clashing with opponents, causing their defeat.
The quality of this show rapidly declined, leading me to focus solely on the WiiWare version of Pokémon Rumble. Fortunately, if you can find it, it’s quite enjoyable.
2. Sonic and the Black Knight
Dare To Fight
Regardless of his actions, Sonic is often met with criticism, and this was particularly evident in the late 2000s following the release of Sonic 06. Every subsequent Sonic game seemed to receive harsh reviews, being slammed mercilessly.
In a different phrasing, Sonic the Hedgehog and the Black Knight wasn’t any different, despite appearing reasonable considering it’s a sequel. However, if looked at independently, it’s quite impressive.
As a die-hard fan, I find myself immersed in an extraordinary tale that places Sonic at the epicenter of King Arthur’s legend. Wielding his powerful blade, he slices through each obstacle in his path with unrivaled precision. With every upgrade and skill I unlock, the exhilarating sensation of these swift, decisive strikes only intensifies.
The game has its quota of superfluous Wii features, yet it boasts an engaging narrative, exceptional music, and an appealing aesthetic, making it one of the finest Sonic spin-offs so far.
1. Persona 4: Dancing All Night
Set It Free and Dance
As someone who’s been a longtime fan of the Persona series, I can confidently say that Persona 4: Dancing All Night stands out as the best dancing game spinoff in the franchise. It may have slipped under the radar for many, but believe me, it’s absolutely worth checking out. This rhythm game offers an exceptional blend of music, storytelling, and character development that truly sets it apart from other games in its genre. So if you’re a fan of the Persona series or just enjoy a great rhythm game, don’t overlook Persona 4: Dancing All Night – it’s downright awesome!
If you’re eager to delve deeper into the company of characters from Persona 4 who you’ve invested a total of 100 hours with so far, you’ll find some delightful character exchanges here. Plus, it’s all set within an engaging and enjoyable narrative.
This spin-off seems to seamlessly continue the original game’s narrative and atmosphere, offering robust gameplay mechanics, and top-notch music that one would anticipate from a rhythm game.
Unfortunately, playing it these days can be quite challenging because you need either a PlayStation Vita or a substantial amount of money to purchase all the dance game collections to play it on PS4. Kudos, Atlus, for such an innovative approach!
