10 My Hero Academia Characters Who Are Surprisingly Weak Despite Their Appearances

Summary

  • Moonfish, Uwabami, and Death Arms are portrayed as stronger than they actually are due to weaker quirks or lack of strength.
  • Despite high expectations, certain characters like Mei Hatsume excel in support roles rather than physical combat.
  • Characters like Aoyama and Nezu fail to reach their full potential due to struggles with their quirks or lack of combat experience.

In the realm of My Hero Academia, an array of characters, both heroes and villains, showcase immense physical power combined with extraordinary abilities known as Quirks. Yet, during Midoriya’s journeys, he’s met several individuals who, despite their intimidating looks or fearsome reputations, ultimately proved to be less formidable than fans might have anticipated. Instead, they turned out to be mere obstacles rather than significant challenges.

One significant factor leading certain characters in “My Hero Academia” to appear weak compared to others is their inability to match the rapid power escalation throughout the series. By the end of the series, many key protagonists and antagonists have become extraordinarily powerful due to rigorous training and mastery over their Quirks, leaving some characters unable to keep pace. Conversely, an individual may seem strong on the surface, but in reality, they might possess a quirk that proves to be largely ineffective in combat situations, making them less formidable than they appear. In essence, let’s explore those characters from “My Hero Academia” who seemed powerful at first glance but ultimately proved to be relatively weak.

8. Moonfish

The Terrifying Death Row Inmate Doesn’t Make Anywhere Near As Much Of An Impact As His Fellow Villains

Amongst all members of the League of Villains, none can match Moonfish for sheer terror-inducing looks. With a past that includes time on death row and a lethal ability to form blades from his teeth, he was destined to be an intimidating adversary right from the start of the Forest Training storyline.

In truth, Moonfish doesn’t seem particularly powerful compared to Todoroki and Fumikage. Todoroki effortlessly deflects Moonfish’s attacks using an ice shield, while Fumikage annihilates Moonfish’s body with his Dark Shadow ability. Even though Moonfish reappears briefly during the final war, he is once again captured and arrested. Despite having a lethal Quirk that undoubtedly increased his body count, Moonfish appears surprisingly weak throughout the series.

7. Mei Hatsume

Midoriya’s Close Friend And Costume Stylist Focuses More On Building Than Fighting

Mei is particularly skilled at enhancing her friends’ abilities by modifying their gear and outfits, but she isn’t a strong combatant herself. In the early stages of the U.A Sports Festival, she uses her Support Gear to gain an advantage, but later in the story, she retreats to the school workshop where she focuses on inventing innovative devices for the heroes to utilize.

Without a doubt, Mei has proved indispensable to Midoriya and their team, yet it was unexpected that she wouldn’t be more actively engaged in battles. One might expect Mei to summon a massive robot or something similar to fend off opponents, but her passion for creation, coupled with her relatively weak Quirk, limits her physical strength compared to many of her peers on the battlefield.

6. Nezu

The Principal Of U.A High Is Much Weaker In Terms Of Strength Compared To The Pro Heroes

As the principal of U.A High School, a renowned institution housing some of Earth’s mightiest heroes, people often speculated about Nezu’s hidden powers, given his seemingly harmless appearance as a mouse. Characters in this series often possess Quirks that allow them to transform into far more menacing forms, like Re-Destro, and it appeared that Nezu might be one of them.

Regrettably, the anticipated scene where Nezu undergoes a dramatic power increase didn’t occur, as it was disclosed that his Quirk enhances his intelligence instead of providing him with physical strength. Consequently, he developed into an individual who would prefer to steer clear of conflict due to his weakness and limited combat skills.

5. Ending

After Talking A Big Game, Ending Is Utterly Humiliated By The Heroes

In the Endeavor Agency storyline, there’s a character named Ending who occasionally appears as an antagonist. He aims to provoke Endeavor’s darker and aggressive nature. To achieve this, Ending abducts Endeavor’s son, Natsuo, and demands that Endeavor destroy him. In response, three young heroes – Midoriya, Bakugo, and Todoroki – choose to challenge him instead of Endeavor. However, Ending turns out to be quite a weak opponent during the confrontation, and it doesn’t take long before he’s captured by the police.

Regarding his unique ability, Whiteline, which enables him to control traffic lanes and potentially immobilize targets, it seemed like Ending would pose a significant challenge to the heroes for some time. However, surprisingly, he was defeated so swiftly that many spectators soon forgot all about him.

4. Ragdoll

Having Her Quirk Stolen Puts Ragdoll On The Sidelines For Much Of The Story

Originally part of the powerful team of feline heroes called the Wild, Wild Pussycats, Ragdoll was. However, during the Forest Training arc, she was abducted by the villains and lost her ability to search for things with her Quirk. As a result, she could no longer fulfill her hero duties and decided to support her friends from the sidelines instead. This inactivity weighed heavily on her, causing discomfort and sadness throughout the remainder of the story.

Delving into the captivating world of The Wild, Wild Pussycats, I must say they made an impressive debut, boasting an extraordinary team synergy that could swiftly vanquish even formidable enemies. As you’ll soon discover in our adventure, Ragdoll’s unique ability, known as Search Quirk, held immense promise – a fact later underscored by the villain All For One. However, the tragic consequence of this power being stolen from its rightful owner was a significant loss of her inherent might.

3. Uwabami

Despite Being A Pro-Hero, Uwabami Doesn’t Honestly Seem All That Worthy Of The Position

To become a Pro-Hero, one must demonstrate a readiness to safeguard others and possess the ability to do so using their unique power, or Quirk. However, Uwabami seems excessively focused on maintaining her stylish image, which results in minimal heroic actions. Instead, she’s usually spotted shooting ads, meeting fans, or participating in beauty contests.

As an observer, I noticed that many of the Pro-Heroes, including themselves, got their moments to showcase their powers and skills throughout the series. However, it was different for Uwabami. Despite her Serpent Quirk having immense potential in combat situations, she barely left a mark during the course of the series, which was somewhat disappointing given the initial excitement surrounding this Pro Hero among fans.

2. Death Arms

Death Arms Doesn’t Get Much Screentime To Demonstrate His Quirk’s Potential

It’s surprising that a character named Death Arms, seeming so powerful, often functions primarily as a support hero throughout the series. At first sight, Death Arms appears capable of dealing substantial harm, given his Quirk enhances his physical strength at will.

Although temporarily taking on the role of Mt. Lady’s security guard, Death Arms eventually renounced his hero duties entirely due to escalating public scrutiny following Dabi’s performance. In many aspects, it seemed Mirko was poised to swiftly succeed Death Arms as the dominant force within the team.

1. Yuga Aoyama

Aoyama’s Tricky Quirk And Fractured Mindset Prevents Him From Keeping Up With The Rest Of Class 1-A

For most part of the tale, all students in Class 1-A work collectively to enhance their strength and abilities as a team, except Aoyama who lags behind due to his unique Quirk needing more time to master. However, what truly hinders him from reaching his peak is not just the difficulty with his own power, but also his deep-seated fear of All for One.

Towards the end of the tale, just prior to the commencement of the climactic battle, it’s disclosed that Aoyama has been secretly working for All For One all along, a fact he doesn’t wear with honor. This revelation takes a heavy toll on Aoyama, both emotionally and physically, hindering him from achieving the same power levels as Midoriya and their peers, despite being in the same class.
