As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can attest to the power of modding in breathing new life into old games. And oh boy, have these three games benefited greatly from the incredible work done by their respective communities!
Do you sometimes find yourself longing to revisit a classic game from your past, only to be deterred by the thought of its outdated visuals?
In various situations, we can relate. Fortunately, for PC users, there’s a thriving modding community where many modders share similar feelings as you.
In some cases, these modifications overhaul the entire game visuals starting from scratch, whereas others focus on enhancing character designs, special effects, or other visual aspects.
Numerous games have undergone a facelift through graphic modifications, and here’s a list of ten classic games transformed into visual wonders by these mods.
10 Final Fantasy 7
No More Block Monsters
The classic game Final Fantasy 7 is recognized as one of the greatest and influential titles ever made, yet its vintage character is noticeable nowadays. Thankfully, dedicated modifiers have invested a tremendous amount of work to modernize the game for contemporary players.
Among numerous graphic modifications for Final Fantasy 7, the standout choice is the Gaia VII Remaster. This fantastic overhaul significantly upgrades the backdrops, character designs, enemy models, and visual effects, making the game feel almost contemporaneous with today’s gaming standards.
As a gamer diving into this title for the very first time, I can say that the sharp graphics make for an immersive and captivating experience, even though some might debate if it detracts from the original’s endearing appeal.
9 Deus Ex
The Revision We Needed
Revisiting the foundations of the Deus Ex series, originally launched in 2000, poses a significant challenge due to its rich and well-loved installments throughout the years.
Modern gaming can be harsh at times, and let’s face it, not always pretty. Yet, we’ve got a fantastic remedy: Deus Ex: Revision, a fan-made modification that significantly enhances the game. From improved lighting to upgraded textures, this update makes today’s playthrough much more enjoyable.
Instead of merely updating the graphics, it’s a comprehensive makeover that encompasses every aspect of the game, while preserving the core objective of the original. It also introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements and expansions to the map.
8 System Shock 2
The Space Makeover
Glancing at the outstanding remake of System Shock last year, it’s definitely worth checking out the top-tier and widely acclaimed game from the series, System Shock 2.
This terrifying space adventure, released in 1999, needs a massive remaster, if not a full remake.
Rather than just anticipating it to materialize, you might as well experiment with this captivating graphics enhancement which helps soften the eerie, dark atmosphere of the space horror a bit.
In modern times, enhancing the graphics of System Shock 2, particularly in terms of textures, significantly improves the gaming experience without altering its original models, thus preserving its authenticity and immersive atmosphere.
7 Watch Dogs
The Graphics We Were Promised in the Trailer
It was widely anticipated that Watch Dogs would become a major force in the gaming industry. The E3 demonstration showcased graphics of exceptional realism, fueling intense excitement among gamers.
Regrettably, the game’s visuals fell short of their initial hype, which negatively impacted its overall quality.
It’s unfortunate indeed, as many find Watch Dogs to be the finest game in the series due to numerous compelling factors. Fortunately, an upgrade to next-gen graphics brings these early pledges to fruition.
This fantastic modification significantly enhances the graphical quality of Watch Dogs, making it comparable to any open-world game currently available; boasting stunning lighting and textures, as well as sharper overall visuals, the original game appears more visually appealing than Watch Dogs: Legion, which was released in 2020.
6 Half Life: 2
A Much Better Looking Dystopia
Half Life 2 stands as one of the gaming industry’s most revered titles. It signified a unique shift within first-person shooter games, demonstrating that they could encompass more than just brutality and disorder; instead, they could offer compelling narratives, immersive environments, and innovative gameplay mechanics.
This game is quite vintage, having been around for about two decades. Consequently, its graphics may not compare favorably to those of more recent games.
The fans of the franchise, however, remain hard at work, and the modding community is incredible.
Among the numerous exceptional options available, you’ll discover a variety of gun texture replacements, improved lighting setups, high-resolution 4K texture packs, and many other creative enhancements to suit your needs.
Translating the game’s current features collectively creates an amazing impression now, and adding these enhancements will make revisiting this timeless classic more enjoyable compared to playing it in its original form.
If you need an excuse to play one of the most important games ever made. Now you’ve got one.
5 Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Vampire Resurrection
Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines might be the sole game in its unique category. As a vast role-playing game centered around vampires, it stands alone as the authentic vampire simulator available to date. Not only is it the only game of its kind, but it’s highly acclaimed for being not just unique, but exceptionally well-crafted too.
Despite releasing on the same day as Half-Life 2 and following closely after Halo 2, its sales performance was less than expected due likely to that competition. This may explain why a direct sequel is yet to come out, with tentative plans for a 2025 release.
Experiencing it nowadays is a genuine delight, particularly due to the outstanding modding community. With a selection of Nexus’s mods, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines can almost match games from the PS3-early PS4 era, and the gameplay that complements these visuals remains as some of the most immersive and intriguing RPG experiences available.
4 Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
This is the Mod You’ve Been Looking For
The game “Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic” is often considered the greatest Star Wars video game ever made. However, due to its age, it can be seen as an antique by many.
These days, the narrative, characters, and visuals of this game are so complex that it’s challenging to play without getting lost. However, with mods, you can remove the dust from the corners and bring out its interstellar space opera brilliance once more.
There are numerous modifications available which enhance the visual aspects such as character designs, special effects, textures, and even the appearance of lightsabers, making the game much more pleasing to the eye.
3 Fallout: New Vegas
A Better Looking Apocalypse
Fallout: New Vegas is a remarkable role-playing game, yet it’s fair to acknowledge that its visual appeal was never its strong suit, even at its initial release.
Despite this limitation, it managed to garner widespread acclaim as one of the finest pure Role-Playing Games set in the Fallout universe. Over time, however, its subpar graphics have become increasingly noticeable.
Today, thanks to the fantastic modding community at Nexus, you don’t have to worry about that.
The modifications available significantly improve those less appealing character designs and dull settings, although they might not reach today’s top-notch quality, you can certainly achieve visuals similar to those found in Fallout 4.
This addition is greatly beneficial. It enhances cityscapes by making their lights more vibrant, improves combat visuals, and most delightfully, it also elevates the aesthetics of the VATS sequences.
2 Final Fantasy XI
A Magical Revamping
Instead of some modifications being extensive graphic overhauls from the original games, Final Fantasy XI offers a distinctive feature known as the Moguri Mod.
Employing AI enhancement, we refine textures, clarify backdrops, but chiefly, we soften character’s faces, providing a glimpse that likely mirrored Square Enix’s original vision for the game at its launch.
At its heart, it’s a straightforward enhancement, yet it transforms playing Final Fantasy XI into an enjoyable experience today. The once confined colors and textures, held back by the PS1’s limitations, now explode vibrantly on the screen. The cutscenes are stunning, magic attacks flash across the screen in vivid hues, and for the first time, the world feels alive.
1 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Whatever World You Want It To Be
Skyrim was released in 2011; graphics-wise, it was a marvel at the time.
Many of us can easily recall the stunning landscapes the world presented, which continue to linger vividly in our memories as we reminisce warmly about them.
13 years have passed since its iconic debut, and regardless of the version you choose, the original Skyrim no longer holds up visually.
Regardless of your personal significance, it is worth noting that if you are a PC user, Skyrim boasts one of the most vibrant and active modding communities in history.
As a gamer, I’m always amazed by the countless graphics modifications available out there. Some of these mods totally transform the familiar landscapes I roam, while others upgrade characters to look like they stepped straight out of next-gen visual masterpieces. And let’s not forget about those that revamp the entire art style of the game, giving it a fresh, unique feel!
With your modding skills at their peak, Skyrim can appear indistinguishable from any current-generation game and, on occasion, surpass them visually.
This, of course, takes a decent amount of time to figure out and tinker with, but if you love the game and just want it to look better, you quite literally have thousands of options to make that happen.
