Resident Evil Requiem is an action-horror game, and while it’s not as intensely frightening as some games focused on pure horror, it still offers some scares and a good atmosphere. Giving players a gun tends to reduce those tense, creeping fears. However, the game compensates for this by creating a feeling of desperation instead.
Look, I know Grace and Leon are both capable fighters, that’s not what I’m worried about. What really gets me thinking is how long they can keep fighting, and how well. Taking down one zombie is easy, but what happens when you’re completely surrounded and you’re almost out of ammo? That feeling of being truly desperate is where Resident Evil Requiem really excels, and honestly, that sense of desperation is built into almost everything the game does, big and small.
Gameplay and scenario spoilers ahead!
10. Scarce Ammo
We Ain’t Made of Bullets Here

As a huge Resident Evil fan, one thing that always gets me is how limited ammo is. You can usually find enough for a couple of pistol clips, but forget about just spraying and praying! You have to be accurate. I always try to aim for headshots or take out their legs to slow them down, then either finish them quickly or make a run for it. Honestly, even getting rid of just one zombie can take more bullets than you think, even if you’re hitting those sweet headshots!
It’s best to save ammo whenever you can, for both Grace’s pistol and especially the Requiem, since Requiem bullets are very rare. You can make more bullets using scrap and the Blood Collector, but those materials are also hard to find.
Leon doesn’t struggle with ammo as much as other characters because he finds a variety of weapons that each use different types of ammunition. However, this can be frustrating – you might have plenty of bullets overall, but not the right kind for the weapon you want to use, like a rifle or shotgun, which can make combat difficult.
9. Situational Items and Crafting
Make an Educated Decision
Grace and Leon can both create helpful items – like ammunition, health kits, and stat boosts – by collecting resources. These items are mostly made from scrap, herbs, and either infected blood or gunpowder. With careful searching, you can usually find everything you need.
Certain items require resources that could be used for other things. For instance, if you find an empty injector, Grace can create either steroids to boost her health or a stabilizer to increase her gun damage, but not both. Later in the game, you can also turn empty bottles into acid bottles, which are great for defeating Lickers. However, making acid bottles means you won’t have those bottles available to distract enemies.
Leon struggles with crafting because of ammunition. Each weapon uses a different type of ammo, so you’ll need both small and large gunpowder, plus scrap metal, to create it. This means you have to make choices – focusing on pistol ammo will leave you short on shotgun shells, and vice versa, as you can’t make everything with limited resources.
8. Grace: Limited Melee
An MMA Fighter, Grace is Not
Leon is strong and easily takes down zombies with his bare hands, but Grace is much less physically imposing and isn’t as good at close-quarters combat. Unlike in other recent Resident Evil games, this means Grace doesn’t have many options for fighting with weapons like knives or kicking.
Grace isn’t very effective in close combat unless she’s using a knife, and even then, the knife takes more damage than the zombies do. While you can finish off a downed zombie with a few swings, it might not be worth the wear and tear on your knife.
Grace can push or kick zombies when they’re down, which is useful for creating space to run or setting up a final blow. However, these moves don’t actually hurt the zombies, unlike Leon’s kick. Think of them as ways to escape a situation, not as damaging attacks – so don’t rely on them to take a zombie out of the fight.
7. Grace: Breaking and Dropping Knives
Whoops, Left My Shiv in Your Neck
Grace’s knives are most effective for pushing away zombies that get too close. Instead of trying to fight them directly, use the knives to create space, which reduces the damage you take. This is usually a better strategy than just repeatedly hitting buttons to break free.
Like I said before, knives don’t last forever. They have a durability rating that decreases each time you use them to fight or escape zombies. Once that durability is gone, the knife breaks and you can’t use it anymore, making it harder to avoid getting bitten.
Ugh, it’s SO frustrating! If a zombie grabs me and I try to stab it with a knife to get it off, the knife actually stays stuck in its face! Seriously, I have to drop it, and even if it’s not broken, I have to kill that zombie just to get my knife back before I can use it again. It’s a total pain!
6. Leon: Hatchet Combat
I’m a Blade Man, Man
Leon’s sections of the game usually have more intense action than Grace’s, with bigger groups of zombies attacking at once. To help with this, Leon has access to a wider variety of guns. He also carries a durable hatchet as a reliable melee weapon, and mastering its use is key to succeeding in his combat.
The hatchet is good for quick, basic attacks, but it doesn’t deal a lot of damage and won’t easily knock zombies off balance. It’s most effective when used for defense and finishing off weakened enemies. If timed correctly, you can use the hatchet to block incoming attacks, and deliver a final blow to a downed zombie.
The hatchet is durable and won’t break like Grace’s knives, but it will become dull over time. Leon needs to regularly sharpen it with a whetstone, otherwise it won’t be effective against zombies, either for finishing them off or defending against attacks. It’s tempting to finish every zombie immediately, but neglecting to maintain the hatchet’s sharpness will leave you without a usable weapon when you need it most.
5. Stealth Takedowns
The Best Way to Win a Fight is Not to Be There
In Requiem, particularly when playing as Grace, the most stressful moments often come from trying to avoid fighting altogether. Getting surrounded by zombies with nowhere to run is a real danger, so quietly taking enemies down when possible is key to survival.
Grace can silently eliminate zombies by approaching them from behind and injecting them with a special device. This device causes the zombie to burst into a bloody mess, but surprisingly, it’s still quiet. Each device can only be used once, and it only works when you’re directly behind the zombie or if it’s already down. If a zombie turns around before you can use it, you’ll have to fight it the hard way.
Leon can also silently eliminate zombies from behind using his hatchet, just like you can. This works as long as the hatchet isn’t broken, but be careful – you’re still vulnerable to attacks from other zombies while you’re doing it.
4. Armed Zombies
Who Gave These Zombies SMGs?
In Requiem, the T-Virus doesn’t completely erase a person’s mind when it turns them into a zombie. They retain fragments of their former selves, which makes them unsettling, but also strangely relatable. Interestingly, this also allows them to use a variety of weapons, despite their condition.
Okay, so playing as Grace is seriously creepy! You’ll run into zombies shuffling around with IV drips, and the doctors are way more aggressive – they’re swinging bone saws like crazy and can hit you from further away. If you’re playing as Leon, though, you’ve got a bigger problem with armed zombies – they’re coming at you with axes, clubs, and even chainsaws! But Leon can throw weapons back at them, which is awesome, and he can even pick up and use a dropped chainsaw himself! It definitely changes how you play each character.
While exploring the wrecked city of Raccoon City, Leon will face zombies that were once members of the BSAA. These zombies carry submachine guns and will immediately start shooting at him in a broad spray, forcing players to find cover until the zombies run out of ammunition. To make things even more dangerous, some zombies are positioned on rooftops, operating mortars and launching large explosives at Leon. It’s hard to believe a zombie could manage such a task – they must have been very well-trained in life.
3. Blister Heads
V-ACT V2
Playing as Grace, defeating a zombie in a hallway can be a little frustrating, but you can usually manage it. However, if you don’t use a hemolytic injector to destroy the body, you might eventually find your way blocked by a much more dangerous enemy: a Blister Head.

Similar to how Crimson Heads were created in the original Resident Evil, Blister Heads appear when a zombie infected with the T-Virus is killed and then mutates further. This secondary mutation heals their injuries and makes them stronger, faster, and more aggressive. They’re much tougher to take down with a standard pistol, especially since they dodge attacks. While a special ‘Requiem’ shot is the most effective way to defeat them, it’s not always possible to land.
Leon also runs into Blister Heads, but he can defeat them simply by smashing their heads with his hatchet. However, you still need to knock them down first, which can be tricky because they constantly duck and dodge.
2. Grace: Stalker Enemies
They’re Always There, Around the Corner
Okay, so like with Resident Evil 2, this game has those bigger, tougher enemies that really hunt you down. But playing as Grace, it’s way more intense. She’s not as strong as Leon, so trying to fight these guys directly is almost a guaranteed death sentence. You really have to focus on running and hiding – it’s the only way to survive!
Throughout the game, Grace faces various stalkers. The most unique is a tall, unsettling creature known as ‘The Girl,’ who avoids light. She also runs into a large kitchen chef and an even bigger stalker named Chunk in the east wing of the facility. While you can defeat Chunk and the chef, it requires a lot of firepower from the Requiem weapon or multiple doses of the hemolytic injector.
Near the end of the game, while exploring the world of ARK, Grace runs into a group of dangerous Lickers. These creatures hunt by sound, making this a final challenge where stealth is key. Players must carefully avoid making noise and stay out of the Lickers’ path, being mindful of things like broken glass that could give them away.
1. Leon: T-Virus Sickness
He’s On his Last Legs
As Leon and Grace delve deep into ARK beneath the ruins of Raccoon City, Leon’s condition, Raccoon City Syndrome, has become critically severe. He’s covered in dark blotches and is no longer able to ignore the intense pain and worsening symptoms.
Okay, so playing ARK as Leon can be seriously creepy. Sometimes, I’ll start feeling the effects of the T-Virus – everything goes blue and blurry, and I move super slow. The worst part? It always happens when zombies or Lickers are nearby. Talk about bad timing! It makes surviving that much harder.
Even while Leon is attacking, you can still move, shoot, and fight with melee weapons, but aiming becomes more difficult and you’re slower. When facing a Licker about to attack – and a precise headshot is the only way to stop it – impaired vision and slower movement are particularly dangerous.
