Even though they might appear easy targets for zombies and mutants, they persistently battle through all the hardships, making it effortless for fans to root for them enthusiastically.

Despite facing significant challenges, Steve turns out to be a valuable asset to Claire, albeit his innocence occasionally lands them in tricky situations, such as getting stuck in rooms or accidentally activating forbidden switches. Sadly, Steve’s untimely demise cut short his journey, but his development and growth throughout the narrative left many viewers rooting for him.

6. Brad Vickers

Brad Would Try To Fight Through His Cowardice To Help His Fellow S.T.A.R.S Teammates

Within private circles, Brad Vickers, a S.T.A.R.S team member, is commonly known as “chickenheart” among his peers, reflecting his character. In essence, Brad can be described as fearful or cowardly, this becoming evident when he chooses to abandon his team in the initial game by fleeing in the helicopter as they are hunted by zombies and find themselves trapped within the Spencer Mansion.

It’s evident that Brad is working diligently to conquer this significant flaw. For instance, although he abandons his comrades, he persists in circling the mansion until he spots a beacon from the helipad, which prompts him to toss a rocket launcher for the team’s use. In Resident Evil 3, he similarly strives to aid Jill in her escape, but ultimately succumbs to the Nemesis and meets his end.

However, when he was active, he was seen as an unlikely antagonist compared to Wesker and Excella.

An instance of this is when Leon gets imprisoned by cultists, it’s Ashley who takes on the challenge of solving puzzles to free him, even with relentless enemies pursuing her at every turn.

She too helps Leon by throwing some blue flame lamps at the corrupted knights and opening doors for him using levers that are hard to reach. Despite not being equipped to confront Saddler and his troops, her determination to challenge the odds, even in the face of fear, makes her an inspiring underdog.

After linking up with Claire, Sherry embarks on a nightmarish journey in Resident Evil 2, with Redfield swiftly stepping up as her protective companion.

Given her tender age of only twelve, it’s astonishing that Sherry managed to escape from Raccoon City unscathed. However, her story doesn’t end there. Even when she grows older in Resident Evil 6, Sherry continues to face danger due to her association with the G-Virus. Throughout the series, she is portrayed as a resilient character who must persistently battle for the right to survive, often finding herself in precarious situations.

Initially, she’s forced to evade zombies without a gun for self-defense. However, as the series progresses, Rebecca transforms into a more self-assured and dependable figure within the cast. Yet, there’s always this sense that she’s fighting battles beyond her weight class, given that she lacks the same abilities and background as many of her fellow characters.

As a gamer, I can tell you from my own gaming experience, for a survival horror game to truly scare me, the character I control should always feel like they’re in over their head and outmatched. Characters like Leon, Chris, Jill, and Claire might have plenty of experience battling bioterror and handling weapons, but that just makes them seem too capable to be genuinely terrified. That’s not the case with Ethan, though; he’s an ordinary civilian, which means I, as the player, am always on edge because I don’t know what I’m up against or if I can even handle it.

Ethan lacks the necessary strength and agility to perform roundhouse kicks or shatter boulders. Instead, he’s a rather feeble individual who is primarily trying to comprehend the chaos surrounding him. However, his steadfast loyalty towards his family and unyielding resolve to safeguard them have endeared him to fans. In Resident Evil Village, despite being left in the dark with no assistance from Chris or the BSAA, Ethan went to great lengths to save his daughter, showcasing his true underdog spirit.
