Ice-based powers often make characters incredibly strong in many action-packed anime. It’s a dangerous ability – users can freeze opponents and even the ground around them, adding a spectacular visual element and exciting possibilities to the story. That’s why so many anime include characters who can control ice.
Shonen anime has given us many amazing characters with incredible ice powers. Whether they’re summoning ice dragons or instantly freezing water, these characters always make battles more thrilling and visually stunning.
Ghiaccio (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
No list of cool anime characters would be complete without someone from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and I think Ghiaccio really stands out. He showed up in the Golden Wind arc, and I was immediately struck by his Stand, White Album. It’s different from most Stands in JoJo because it appears as a suit you can actually wear.
When Ghiaccio activates White Album, he’s covered in incredibly strong ice armor that can withstand even the most devastating attacks. While his Stand is active, he can instantly freeze anything he wants – water, air, or even things he simply touches. He’s capable of drastically lowering temperatures, from around -100°C down to -215°C or even colder!
Haku (Naruto)
Who could forget Haku from the Land of Waves arc in Naruto? He was a skilled ninja who deeply admired Zabuza, seeing him as not just a teacher, but as the person who gave his life purpose.
Haku is highly skilled in both wind and water-based ninja techniques, even mastering the rare Ice Release. During the mission to the Land of Waves, he demonstrated his power with abilities like trapping Naruto and Sasuke in his Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals and attacking with the devastating Needle Water Jutsu, which sent a barrage of sharp water spikes towards them.
Uraume (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Keeping up with Sukuna, the King of Curses, during his intense battles requires a truly powerful curse user, and Uraume fits that role perfectly. She’s one of the most formidable villains in the series, strong enough to assist Sukuna when he needs help and even challenge incredibly skilled sorcerers like Kinji Hakari.
In the anime Jujutsu Kaisen, Uraume is a character known for their powers over ice. They can create and control ice even without a water source, though having more water available makes them even stronger. Uraume uses these abilities to launch powerful attacks, such as Frost Calm, which creates freezing mist, and Icefall, which lets them control many ice spikes to attack their enemies.
Shoto Todoroki (My Hero Academia)
Shoto Todoroki is a remarkably gifted student in Class 1-A and is considered one of the most powerful characters in My Hero Academia. Fans appreciate him for both his appearance and his impressive quirk, which allows him to control both ice and fire.
Todoroki has a unique ability: he can control fire with the left side of his body and ice with the right. He’s skilled at using his ice powers to quickly freeze opponents, alter the battlefield, and create dangerous ice weapons. He can even build huge ice structures like glaciers to trap or protect himself. What’s truly remarkable is his ability to combine both fire and ice, creating powerful attacks like Phosphor and Flashfreeze Heatwave, along with other defensive strategies.
Judar (Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic)
Judar, from the anime Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, is a remarkably powerful character, like many ‘overpowered’ magic users in shonen anime. He’s considered one of the strongest Magi and isn’t limited to just ice magic – he can also control gravity, lightning, wind, and even manipulate space and time!
Judar is a truly powerful character and easily deserves recognition. He can create a huge ice spear by absorbing all the moisture from a whole city. Beyond that, he’s able to combine his ice powers with other elements, letting him unleash devastating attacks like ice tornadoes and various other ice-based creations.
Doma (Demon Slayer)
I’m absolutely fascinated by Doma! As one of Muzan’s Upper Moons, his Blood Demon Art is incredible – he can control ice with unbelievable skill. Seriously, he doesn’t just make little ice shards; he conjures massive structures like huge Bodhisattva statues and fields of lotuses! And the way he can freeze the very mist in the air during a battle? It’s a clear sign of just how powerful and masterful his abilities truly are.
Doma isn’t just powerful – he can also create small ice copies of himself to fight alongside him. His opponents are also vulnerable to a freezing mist he generates, which was strong enough to harm Shinobu’s lungs, as seen during the Infinity Castle arc. He expertly combines his skill with war fans, known as Tessenjutsu, with his ice-based blood demon art, making his attacks even more dangerous.

Esdeath (Akame ga Kill)
Esdeath, a character from Akame ga Kill, has the power to instantly freeze many opponents using her special weapon, Demon’s Extract. This weapon is considered the most powerful in the series, making Esdeath one of its strongest fighters.
Esdeath can instantly freeze anything she touches by slowing down the movement of its atoms. Similar to Toshiro from Bleach, she can generate ice from thin air. Creating deadly ice weapons is effortless for her, and she’s even capable of building and controlling entire armies made of ice.
Honestly, what really gets me about Esdeath’s Teigu is her ability to actually freeze time! It’s such a game-changer for dominating a fight, though it’s true she can’t hold it for very long – it takes a huge toll on her, but even a few seconds is devastating.
Gray Fullbuster (Fairy Tail)
Gray Fullbuster from Team Natsu is a well-known ice wizard in Fairy Tail. He’s skilled in various ice-based magic, including creating things from ice. Gray’s biggest strength is his imagination – he can quickly form all sorts of ice objects, like weapons or barriers, to handle any challenge.
He’s an incredibly skilled ice mage, far surpassing anyone else in his control of the element. He can cast exceptionally powerful spells, including some that are considered too dangerous for others to use. He can freeze almost anything, even intense flames, and expertly combines ice with other elements like water to create incredibly destructive attacks.
Toshiro Hitsugaya (Bleach)
Toshiro Hitsugaya, a powerful ice user from the 10th Division in the anime world, is famous for his sword, Hyorinmaru. This weapon lets him control ice and water however he wants, even when there’s no water around.
When Toshiro activates his Shikai, Hyorinmaru, he can summon numerous ice dragons capable of instantly freezing anything they touch, even from a distance. Through extensive training, he’s learned to use his Zanpakuto’s ice and water powers in a variety of powerful and effective ways.
Just when you think Toshiro’s abilities can’t get any stronger, his Bankai, Daiguren Hyorinmaru, undergoes a partial transformation, giving him icy wings and a tail. When fully activated, it completely encases his body in ice armor, dramatically increasing his power.
Kuzan (One Piece)
You definitely don’t want to fight Kuzan from One Piece. His Devil Fruit ability, the Hie Hie no Mi, lets him instantly freeze people solid with even a light touch. He was so powerful that Luffy’s entire crew couldn’t beat him at Long Ring Long Land – many were frozen before they could even get an attack off.
Kuzan’s ice-based Devil Fruit power is so strong in One Piece that he can effortlessly freeze vast sections of the ocean, turning them into solid ice. This not only prevents him from drowning but also allows him to form incredibly dangerous ice weapons, capable of challenging even the strongest fighters like Garp.
Furthermore, Kuzan can strengthen his ice powers using Haki, making both his attacks and defenses even more formidable. He can also use his Devil Fruit ability to significantly change an island’s weather, particularly if given enough time.
