- Games like Left 4 Dead 2, State of Decay 2, and Siren: Blood Curse showcase the variety of terrifying zombies.
Among the timeless monsters, zombies continue to hold a firm place as one of the most beloved. Ever since they made their debut on screen, these brainless creatures have gained increasing popularity, transforming into an instantly recognizable symbol, particularly in video games. Over time, zombies have moved beyond their traditional image of aimless shuffling, and there’s no question that they possess the ability to be truly petrifying.
In horror gaming genres, survival games and shooters featuring a horrifying type of zombies that can run, scream, and devise lethal attacks against victims are infamous for it. These zombies serve as excellent carriers of body horror with their deteriorated and grotesque forms. Consequently, these terrifying zombie designs in horror video games are often lauded due to their chilling visuals and abilities.
10. Clown Infected (Left 4 Dead 2)
A Coulrophobe’s Worst Nightmare
Few zombie shooting games have achieved iconic status like Left 4 Dead 2 does. With its diverse range of zombie species, selection of ranged and melee weapons, and various gameplay modes, there’s no shortage of excitement. Although teamwork for smashing the Infected is crucial, there are still numerous thrilling moments to keep you on edge.
In the “Dark Carnival” campaign, you may encounter an unusual type of zombie known as the Clown Zombie. Though they might not match up in size with behemoths such as the Tank, their menacing teeth, sharp claws, and eerie face paint make them more than formidable. The chilling sight of a zombie clown stepping out from the shadows is truly unforgettable.
Repeating a melee attack on a Clown-infected character’s nose ten times results in players earning the “CL0WND” achievement.
To get the “CL0WND” achievement, you need to attack the nose of a clown-infected character ten times by using melee attacks.
9. Ferals (State Of Decay 2)
Fast And Spidery
In the first-person perspective, I’d say: “I’m deeply engrossed in State of Decay 2, an exhilarating survival game that goes beyond mere resource management for personal survival. Instead, it challenges me to establish and nurture a thriving community of fellow survivors while fortifying our base against the relentless onslaught of a zombie apocalypse.
In State of Decay 2, the “Ferals” prove to be more challenging compared to their counterparts in the initial game, particularly when they appear as a group. These creatures are exceptionally swift, moving on all fours and evading bullets while waiting for an opportune moment to pounce on the player. Spotting them can be tricky, avoiding them is difficult, and their overall movement pattern is downright terrifying.
8. Shibito Brains (Siren: Blood Curse)
Loyal To A Vengeful Deity
In the series “Siren: Blood Curse“, the term “Shibito” refers to the reanimated remains of Hanuda’s villagers who are bound to serve their alien-like deity, Kaiko. What makes them unsettling is their eerily human facade, coupled with their retention of intelligence yet unpredictable behavior, and not forgetting their chilling laughter.
Shibito Controlers” are a specific type of Shibito, each managing their own class of Shibito, distinguished by their bug-like heads. The design of the Wheelchair Brain is particularly unsettling, resembling a swarm of wriggling text leeches. However, all of them present a significant challenge to those with squirmish tendencies or arachnophobia.
7. Lurkers (World War Z)
A Matter Of Life And Death If Caught Off Guard
In simpler terms, “World War Z” delves into the thrilling action of a horror-themed zombie shooter game. It allows up to four players to either work together in the campaign missions or engage in multiple multiplayer modes. Regardless of the chosen path, the game is filled with intense moments as you face hordes of zombies that can be downright overwhelming and nerve-wracking due to all the gunfire.
Lurker” refers to a type of undead creature that can be both terrifying and annoying. Their appearance is gruesome, with scorched and decomposing skin, as well as empty, haunting eyes. However, they are surprisingly stealthy, save for their raspy breathing sounds. The true risk lies in their attack, where they suddenly pounce on unsuspecting prey, often leading to sudden and startling moments.
6. Butchers (Dead Island 2)
Apex Zombies With Razor Arms
After numerous modifications and abandoned production plans, the long-awaited “Dead Island 2” was ultimately launched in 2023. Thankfully, many found the game to be worth the extended wait, as it provided players with ample opportunities for gory zombie combat along with intriguing mechanics set against a visually stunning backdrop of Los Angeles.
One particularly chilling top zombie character in the game is called “The Butcher“. With their bones jutting out as deadly blades from their arms, they can inflict substantial damage and ward off attacks. What’s more, they can recover health if not completely vanquished. And let’s not forget their unsettling habit of moving on all fours, which doesn’t diminish their fear factor in the slightest.
5. Swarmers (Days Gone)
Formidable Flesh-Eating Hordes
The game titled “Days Gone” is set in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest landscape and focuses on Deacon, an outlaw biker, as he embarks on a quest to find his lost wife. Although the emphasis lies on exploration and story development, it incorporates elements of zombie horror for some tense situations.
Swarmers” are creatures transformed into aggressive, swift, and merciless beasts due to the “Freaker Virus”. Though they may not have vast health reserves, encountering a group of ravenous zombies charging towards you is undeniably an exhilarating and chilling situation.
4. Masked Haunted (The Evil Within)
Creepy And Intelligent Undead
Suppose we could journey into one’s mind to reexperience past memories – this idea is delved into by the game “The Evil Within.” It’s a psychological survival horror title that takes players on a chilling adventure with detective Sebastian Castellos, who finds himself in a disorienting landscape of nightmares.
In the game, the “Haunted” were once experiment subjects who perished while attached to STEM. Even though they move rather slowly, certain versions can be downright spooky. The Masked Haunted don masks with eerie smiles and large, dark eyes that shield them from headshots. Their ominous cult-like appearance and murderous nature are genuinely unsettling.
3. Crimson Heads (Resident Evil Remake)
Imagine If Dead Zombies Came Back Even Stronger
As a diehard gamer, I’ve got to admit that the Resident Evil series never fails to deliver when it comes to creepy creatures. From its humble beginnings as a zombie-focused survival horror, it’s grown to encompass bloodsucking vamps, howling werewolves, and colossal bugs too. But if we’re talking traditional undead, the Crimson Heads from the original game still take the cake for me.
Although the “Lickers” give a strong competition, nothing quite compares to the first-time dread of rounding a corner and encountering a revived Crimson Head, which then pursues the player relentlessly. The striking design of these creatures is particularly chilling, especially when combined with the fixed camera angle, creating an unforgettable experience in the horror genre.
In this franchise, numerous terrifying beings can be found, like the parasitic Drain Deimos and the transformed Bakers, although most of them don’t fit the classic definition of zombies. Consequently, these particular creatures haven’t been considered in this context.
2. Stalkers (The Last Of Us Part 2)
Strong, Speedy, And Strategic
The Second Installment of “The Last of Us”
In this second part, our focus shifts to Ellie’s adventure following the events depicted in the initial installment. Similar to its precursor, this game stands out for its compelling narrative, tackling profound and authentic themes. As for gameplay, it has been refined with certain adjustments; one notable addition is the increased presence of “Stalkers”.
In the game, Stalkers, together with “Clickers,” are standout adversaries that leave a lasting impression. While both are formidable, Stalkers have an extra advantage due to their ability to see as well as attack. What adds to their eeriness is their habit of concealing themselves and (as their name implies) following the player before attacking, often in groups. Their sound design also contributes significantly to the chilling atmosphere.
1. Volatiles (Dying Light)
Nocturnal Infected That Live Up To Their Name
One of the top choices in open-world parkour games is “Dying Light”, rivaling titles such as “Assassin’s Creed” and “Marvel’s Spider-Man”. In terms of survival horror, these mechanics lead to engaging and swift gameplay, particularly when set against the backdrop of a city overrun by aggressive zombies.
In the realm of horror video games, Volatiles are undeniably the most infamous creatures, making nighttime exploration perilous. Although they are tougher in Dying Light 2, their behavior in the original game was downright terrifying, traversing both ground and rooftops with equal ease and pursuing the player relentlessly upon detection. With their superhuman speed and immense strength, the piercing scream of a Volatile should instill fear in even the most seasoned players.
