10 Things From Sunrise on the Reaping Hunger Games Fans Want to See in the Movie

The following contains spoilers for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

As a huge fan of the series, I’m incredibly excited about The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes really showed us how well a prequel could work within the Hunger Games universe, and after loving the second prequel book, I – along with countless other fans – am counting down the days until November 20, 2026, when this next movie finally arrives in theaters.

With a strong cast and growing excitement, Sunrise on the Reaping is full of fantastic scenes that will look amazing on the big screen. From the beautiful arena setting and frightening creatures to Haymitch’s role in the beginnings of Panem’s rebellion, audiences are in for a thrilling and captivating movie experience.

10. Lou Lou’s Introduction Marks a Dark Moment in THG Franchise

Her Appearance Could Make For a Shocking Visual

This series is now firmly rooted in the dystopian genre, hinting at violence rather than showing it directly. However, Suzanne Collins really challenged the limits of young adult fiction with Sunrise. In this new book, one of the tributes from District 12, Louella, dies in an accident during the opening ceremony of the games. To hide their error, the Capitol secretly changes the appearance of an unsuspecting girl and presents her as Louella’s replacement.

This situation deeply disturbed Haymitch and the other tributes, who started calling the girl Lou Lou. They were surprisingly kind and protective towards her. Lou Lou’s story represents the darkest turn the Hunger Games series has ever taken, and fans are eager to see how her character will be brought to life on screen.

9. The Mutts Will Be Cute, But Deadly

This Arena’s Muttations Are Horrifyingly Creative

The Gamemakers are known for creating frightening animal hybrids, called ‘muttations’ or simply ‘mutts,’ to use as dangers in the arenas. These mutts are often the most terrifying hazard tributes face. For example, in the 74th Hunger Games, the arena contained large dogs with the eyes of previously killed tributes, and the 75th Games featured vicious monkeys that brutally attacked the competitors.

The animal mutations in the games from Sunrise are particularly shocking, featuring creatures like electric butterflies, baby deer with incredibly sharp hooves, and a massive porcupine covered in poisonous quills. These bizarre creations give Haymitch’s games a surreal feel and present a completely new challenge for longtime Hunger Games fans.

8. The Volcano Eruption is a Fantastic Hunger Games Set Piece

This Arena is a Dangerous One

Viewers who enjoy The Hunger Games are drawn to its exciting action sequences, making the clock arena in Catching Fire a memorable part of the series. The arena in Sunrise on the Reaping promises a similar spectacle, featuring a massive volcano that erupts during the games. This moment is sure to be a highlight of the film and will likely be the scene audiences remember most.

Even if you haven’t read the book, the volcano serves as a strong hint of things to come, creating suspense. Keen viewers will likely anticipate a dramatic event, and the eruption marks a critical turning point for Haymitch, raising the emotional stakes for the main character’s journey through the games.

7. Haymitch and Lenore Dove’s Picnic is a Sunrise on the Reaping Highlight

A Sweet Moment in a Sad Story

The characters who participate in the Hunger Games always face terrible hardship, so it’s heartwarming when they find moments of happiness. In the series, Haymitch finds solace with a woman named Lenore Dove, and they escape to a peaceful meadow near District 12 to hide from the authorities. Many readers are eager to learn more about their love story, even though it ultimately ends in tragedy.

The trailer features scenes of Lenore Dove with her geese and giving Haymitch the firestriker, hinting at the romantic storyline in Sunrise. This moment is the story’s most emotionally resonant part, and foreshadows the shocking ending. While Lenore’s death is heartbreaking, seeing her joyful in these scenes will be a welcome relief.

6. The Introduction of Legacy Characters is What a Franchise is All About

Getting to Know Some of The Hunger Games’ Most Iconic Players

Franchises often allow fans to follow their favorite characters over a long period of time. With the new movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, viewers will get to see younger versions of characters like Beetee, Effie, Plutarch, Caesar, and Mags – twenty-five years before the events of The Hunger Games trilogy. The film features a strong cast, including Ralph Fiennes returning as President Snow, alongside Jesse Plemmons as Plutarch Heavensbee and Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket.

It’s fantastic to get this extra content just for fans, but seeing familiar characters before the events of Catching Fire and Mockingjay – and how the rebellion secretly began – will be really cool. Plus, the movie has a fantastic cast, making it even more exciting to see these characters brought to life by some of Hollywood’s best actors.

5. The Cornucopia Scene is Always a THG Classic

The Arena Reveal Makes For an Exciting Scene Every Time

Fans love the different arenas in The Hunger Games series. Each one presents unique obstacles and landscapes for the tributes, and the arenas have changed over time, reflecting the evolution of the Games themselves. After getting a glimpse of Haymitch’s arena in Catching Fire, viewers are eager to see the new, colorful arena brought to life in the movie.

The arena for the 50th Hunger Games was intentionally created to appear safe and inviting, masking the real dangers within. It’s heavily inspired by Alice in Wonderland – the rabbit guiding Haymitch through the maze is a clear example – and offers a vibrant, colorful landscape, a stark contrast to the grim setting of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It will be satisfying to see Haymitch use his wits to overcome the arena’s challenges, mirroring Katniss’s success in her second Games.

4. Haymitch’s Attempted Sabotage of the Arena Redefines What We Knew About the Rebellion

Getting a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Games

What makes Sunrise on the Reaping so interesting as a prequel is that it adds new layers to the entire series. We learn that Katniss wasn’t the first tribute to attempt to disrupt the Hunger Games. The story reveals that Beetee comes up with a plan to flood the arena as a way to sabotage it, and he shares this idea with Haymitch, who then discovers a hidden access point underneath the arena’s barrier.

The moment the arena is shattered is always a striking visual – it’s like something out of The Matrix. Katniss destroying the arena in Catching Fire was particularly impactful, and it makes sense that Haymitch’s attempt to disrupt things will be a memorable scene in the Sunrise movie too. I’m excited to see how the filmmakers show us the behind-the-scenes work of the Gamemakers and how they bring the arena’s terrifying reality to life.

3. The Public Cut of the Games Showcases an Important Theme

A Critique of Propaganda is a Go-To Hunger Games Storyline

A key theme in Sunrise on the Reaping is how the Capitol uses the Hunger Games to frighten people and reinforce its control. During the 50th Hunger Games, Haymitch attempts to disrupt the competition, famously using the arena’s force field to help secure victory. However, the Capitol responds by editing the footage of the Games to cover up his actions and create a false narrative of what happened.

Viewers are eager to see how the movie adaptation will portray the Games, particularly since the Capitol within the story uses visuals so effectively to control people. The new prequel, Sunrise, offers a fascinating look at how the Capitol gained ideological control over the districts, and it’s positioned perfectly on the timeline between Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and the first Hunger Games book.

2. Maysilee Slapping Drusilla is a Satisfying Moment

The District 12 Tributes Have Always Had Some Fight in Them

Throughout The Hunger Games series, the people of the Capitol consistently seem unaware of the realities faced by others – which isn’t surprising, given they’ve always lived in safety and comfort. Drusilla, who worked as the District 12 escort before Effie Trinket, embodies the worst aspects of the Capitol. She’s not only unkind and heartless, but her obvious dislike for the tributes from District 12 probably contributed to their suffering and deaths.

By chapter four, Maysilee has reached her breaking point with Drusilla’s constant criticism, and after Drusilla hits her, Maysilee fights back with a strong blow. The dynamic between mentors and tributes is a classic element of The Hunger Games—think of Effie’s famous line about mahogany—and seeing Drusilla finally face consequences is expected to be a particularly rewarding moment in the Sunrise adaptation.

1. Haymitch’s Final Fight with Silka is a Series Pinnacle

A Dramatic Conclusion to a Nerve-Wracking Games

One of the most memorable moments from the Hunger Games series is the footage of Haymitch winning his own Games. Katniss and Peeta watch it while preparing for the 75th Hunger Games in Catching Fire. The scene shows a final, desperate fight where Haymitch is cornered by Silka at the arena’s edge. Both are severely injured, and Silka appears to be winning.

Haymitch famously dodges an axe thrown by Silka, anticipating it will return and hit her – a prediction proven correct by his earlier tests. This clever and ruthless act, on top of his already witty personality, solidifies Haymitch’s place as a fan-favorite and one of the most compelling characters in the series.
