The Best Tips to Play and Enjoy Burden of Command And Ease The Difficulty Curve
In an effort to secure permission from Luke, the main figure at Burden of Command, ahead of my review, I went above and beyond by bothering him. Instead of simply sharing a few initial thoughts (which you can find here), I’ve prepared a list of 10 useful suggestions that could maximize your gaming experience and minimize any potential headaches as you navigate the game’s learning curve.
10 – Pay Attention In Bootcamp
This game deviates significantly from typical war strategy games, so if you’re a veteran strategy player, be prepared for a new approach, particularly its unique “Order System”. Burden of Command includes an extensive training session (it could last around two or three hours) that teaches the fundamentals and forms the bond between your character and his troops. Instead of rushing through it, I recommend appreciating the engaging storyline this training session offers.
9 – Use The 4Fs Of Combat
The military training should adequately introduce you to the concept of the 4Fs of combat: Find, Fix, Flank, and Finish. Essentially, these represent locating your opponent before they see you, neutralizing them so they can’t retaliate, moving to a strategic advantage to take them by surprise, and finally, executing a decisive strike that either results in their surrender or eliminates the danger entirely. Neglecting these strategies could lead to casualties and mission failure.
8 – Be Aggressive
In Burden of Command, it’s clear from the start that persistently attacking units that are already suppressed doesn’t yield significant results. It’s tougher to eliminate suppressing units compared to non-suppressed ones because they’re protected by cover and hunkered down, waiting for the barrage of bullets to cease. This implies that playing excessively cautiously, aiming from afar for a single fortunate shot to bring down an enemy soldier, might not be the optimal strategy. Instead, you should seize the initiative, act aggressively, outmaneuver the enemy, and leave them with no opportunity to retaliate.
7 – Use Combined Arms Tactics
You’ve got a variety of weapons at your disposal. It’s crucial to understand how best to utilize each one to gain tactical advantage. Machine guns, mortars, artillery, and tanks all serve distinct purposes in battle. To minimize losses and increase your chances of victory, make the most of these supportive weapons. Heavy machine guns and mortars are great for keeping the enemy pinned down. Tanks offer direct fire support and can shock the enemy, but none of this matters if you don’t strategically position your infantry to attack, capture, or neutralize the enemy.
6 – Think Of Your Units As Real People
As I began viewing my in-game units more like real individuals instead of mere chess pieces, it became clear that many design choices were carefully thought out. Arranging them across an open field without considering cover fire? They’d likely balk at the idea. Ordering a disorganized group to storm a fortified position? The outcome would likely be dismal. Leaving them unsupervised without an officer nearby for guidance and morale boosting? Their performance would suffer significantly. If they were surrounded by enemies, their instinct would be to retreat. Under constant fire, they’d scatter seeking safety.
The ‘Burden of Command’ philosophy considers units as living entities, understanding that no one wants to meet an untimely end. If I want my troops to follow orders effectively, I need to fulfill my role as a commanding officer by setting them up for success – providing cover, organizing formations, and ensuring they have the necessary resources. Taking care of them ensures they’ll reciprocate by having my back in return.
