My Historian Heart and Brain Loves These Underrated Gems
I really love discovering new games through this job – so many are completely off the radar! It’s a fantastic feeling when you unexpectedly find something you truly enjoy.
Looking for some hidden gems in the world of historical strategy games? This article highlights fantastic titles you might have missed or forgotten. We’re digging up these incredible games that truly bring history to life, offering engaging gameplay from ancient battles between phalanxes and legions, through medieval warfare, the age of muskets, and all the way to modern conflicts.
10 – Field of Glory II
The Total War series, known for its realistic and grand depictions of history, gained a huge following starting in the early 2000s with titles like Rome: Total War, Medieval, and Shogun 2. Recently, though, fans haven’t had many options for detailed historical strategy games. That’s where Field of Glory II comes in. Developed by Byzantine Games and published by Slitherine, this turn-based strategy game offers the most in-depth simulation of ancient warfare you’ll find anywhere. With hundreds of factions, thousands of units, historical campaigns, and a simple skirmish mode, Field of Glory II is ideal for players who want to explore alternative historical scenarios with a strong focus on accuracy.
Plus, Field of Glory II has a great expansion called Field of Glory II: Medieval. What’s really neat is that you can combine both games to create battles where ancient and medieval armies fight each other.
9 – Squad Battles: Eagles Strike
World War 2 is a popular setting for games, especially first-person shooters and strategy titles. However, many of these games offer a simplified and often unrealistic depiction of actual combat and tactics. If you’re looking for a more realistic and detailed tactical experience, I recommend the Squad Battles series by Wargame Design Studio, particularly Squad Battles: Eagles Strike. This game features 120 scenarios, playable as either side, and thoroughly covers the experiences of American paratroopers throughout the liberation of Europe – from the initial landings on D-Day to the intense fighting in the Ardennes and beyond. It’s a complex wargame, so if you prefer something more straightforward, consider the game mentioned below.
8 – Close Combat: Panthers in the Fog
The Close Combat series was once incredibly popular, becoming one of the most successful World War II game franchises of all time. However, after a strong run in the 1990s and early 2000s, the series has been largely inactive, with only a few releases over the years, including Close Combat – Panthers in the Fog in 2012.
The Close Combat series is popular because it realistically portrays the mental side of war. Soldiers don’t just act on command; they react like real people – taking cover, getting tired, losing courage, or being inspired. This means every battle unfolds differently, and victory depends on both your strategy and your soldiers’ ability to handle the stress of combat.
