10 Years Later, Heroes of the Storm Defies MOBA Norms in a Refreshing Way

On June 2nd, 2015, Blizzard debuted their venture into the multiplayer online battle arena genre with the release of “Heroes of the Storm“. Before this, the game was known as “Blizzard DOTA” and later “Blizzard All-Stars”, but it wasn’t until October 2013 that it took on its final name. Regardless of its previous titles, over the past 10 years, “Heroes of the Storm” has stood out as Blizzard’s most ambitious crossover project to date.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but reflect on the unique journey that “Heroes of the Storm” took. This game was more than just a sequel; it was a testament to the roots of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre that truly blossomed with fan-made maps like “Aeon of Strife” for “StarCraft” and “Defense of the Ancients” for “Warcraft 3”. These creations paved the way for gaming giants like “League of Legends”, “Smite”, and even “DotA 2”.

Yet, Blizzard’s entry into this realm was not merely an inevitability. “Heroes of the Storm” brought about some significant shifts that set it apart in a genre brimming with competition. It’s these profound changes that make it a standout.

Heroes of the Storm โ€“ A MOBA Unlike Any Other

No Items in Heroes of the Storm

In contrast to other Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games such as League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm distinguishes itself by not requiring players to acquire items after returning to base and farming currency. Instead, it amplifies character strength through Talent choices, which are selected as characters level up during a game. In titles like Pokemon Unite, while they have unique approaches to items with Held Items and Battle Items, these still differ from traditional MOBA mechanics.

In Heroes of the Storm, characters primarily return to their base for health and mana replenishment, repositioning, or if they’ve been defeated. Unlike League of Legends where frequent item purchases are necessary, this mechanic ensures continuous action on the battlefield in HotS, as Healing Fountains and Globes extend players’ combat duration, making HotS matches more active compared to a typical Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game.

Over a Dozen Maps With Unique Objectives

A wide variety of arenas are crucial in every multiplayer battle arena (PvP) game, and Heroes of the Storm boasts an abundance of them. With over a dozen maps available, several of which have unique variations in other Heroes of the Storm game modes such as Brawl Mode, it’s unusual to fight on the same Battlefield during the same play session. While many multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs) offer multiple maps, few can match the variety that Heroes of the Storm provides โ€“ with some, like League of Legends, only featuring a single map for each major game mode.

Map Game Objective
Blackheart’s Bay Original Turn in coins to buy a canon barrage on the enemy base
Cursed Hollow Original Collect tributes to curse the enemy team’s minions and base
Dragon Shire Original Control shrines to possess the Dragon Knight statue
Haunted Mines Original Collect skulls from the mines to empower the team’s Grave Golem
Garden of Terror Original Collect seeds to summon the Garden Terror
Sky Temple Original Control the shrine to blast the enemy base with lasers
Tomb of the Spider Queen Original Turn in gems to summon Webweavers
Battlefield of Eternity Diablo Defeat the enemy Immortal while defending their own
Infernal Shrines Diablo Activate shrines and kill Skeletal Defenders to summon a Punisher
Towers of Doom Original Claim Altars to damage the enemy’s core
Braxis Holdout StarCraft Capture beacons to empower the team’s Zerg wave
Warhead Junction StarCraft Collect Nukes to launch on the enemy base
Hanamura Temple Overwatch Escort payloads into enemy territory to barrage the enemy base
Volskaya Foundry Overwatch Capture the point to summon the two-seat Triglav Protector mech
Alterac Pass Warcraft Free allied prisoners to call in a cavalry rush

Additionally, each of these maps has distinct goals that get activated at different stages in the game. Ranging from launching laser beams from sacred statues and summoning spiders with Webweavers, to controlling Dragon Knight figures and fighting angelic and demonic Immortals, every map offers unique elements that stir up conflict and offers decisive power-ups for the winner. Although some players may argue that certain goals are more enjoyable than others, it’s hard to claim that the diversity leads to repetitive gameplay.

The Ultimate Blizzard Crossover

Without a doubt, one standout feature of Heroes of the Storm is its role as a Blizzard-universe crossover on a grand scale. Characters, levels, and gameplay elements from all major Blizzard games – even classic ones such as The Lost Vikings – are integrated within the game alongside exclusive content. This rich tapestry of over 30 years of gaming history gives Heroes of the Storm a distinct and immersive experience. Familiar aspects like mounts from World of Warcraft and Healing Fountains from Diablo bridge connections to these legendary games, while unique dialogues between characters who would otherwise never interact result in unparalleled and side-splitting moments that can only be found within the realm of Heroes of the Storm.

The Fate and Legacy of Heroes of the Storm

Despite its notable qualities, Heroes of the Storm struggled to match giants such as League of Legends. It transitioned into maintenance mode in July 2022, and since then, occasional balance adjustments and bug fixes have been made. However, no new content has been added to the game. While it remains playable with a dedicated fan base, it’s essentially stagnant at this point.

Many supporters had hoped that Microsoft might reintroduce “Heroes of the Storm” following the completion of their acquisition of Blizzard in October 2023. The initial update after maintenance mode occurred around that time, and some enticing benefits for “Heroes of the Storm” were included in the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate earlier this year. However, there hasn’t been any further sign of a full-scale revival of “HotS”. Regrettably, the 10th anniversary would have been an ideal opportunity to share some news, so unless Blizzard comes forward with something soon, the prospect of “Heroes of the Storm” making a return seems slim at best.

Despite the fact that Heroes of the Storm might no longer exist, there’s a possibility that its impact could persist in different forms. Reports suggest that Nexon is working on a new Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game based on Overwatch for mobile devices, but specific details about it are scarce. Since some Overwatch characters were featured in Heroes of the Storm, this potential mobile title might not include characters from franchises like Warcraft, StarCraft, or Diablo. However, it could potentially draw inspiration from Blizzard’s original MOBA and offer content that fans who miss Heroes of the Storm might appreciate.
