Zombies and video games have gone hand in hand for decades.

Regardless of the game, there’s excitement and thrill in acting frantically, as if fleeing from a pack of the undead, much like panicking when you see a group of headless chickens running around.

Certain titles delve deeper into the concept, incorporating the menace of swarming zombie mobs as a defining aspect of their essence.

Although Call of Duty: World at War didn’t invent the zombie horde shooter genre, it certainly played a significant role in making it popular and mainstream. Its impact can still be seen, even in many games on this list.

To add some variety and excitement, I’ve narrowed down my selections to only one game per franchise. While there are many excellent zombie games from series like the Black Ops, I don’t want to occupy at least three spots with different versions of them.

As a gamer myself, I can vouch that playing games with friends significantly enhances the fun factor. Many of the games I’ve included in this list offer a multiplayer mode, though it’s not always necessary for an enjoyable experience.

The genre owes itself nicely to first-person shooters, but they aren’t a requirement.

Despite having an unconventional title, “Yet Another Zombie Survivors” stands out as highly engaging and a remarkable contribution to the zombie video game genre.

You might’ve figured it out from the title, but let me tell you that “Yet Another Zombie Survivors” is similar to “Vampire Survivors,” falling into the category of a game where bullets rain heavily.

Zombies relentlessly attack from every direction and appear in greater numbers the longer you play.

In this game, you form a team of survivors, selecting your squad members at the start of each playthrough. At first, defeating the horde seems impossible, but soon enough, you’ll find yourself drawn into an engaging cycle of progression. With persistence and time, you’ll eventually achieve your first victory.

9. 7 Days To Die

Fear For Your Life

Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best in gaming, and 7 Days to Die is a perfect example.

Based on its title, it appears that within a week, you’re expected to encounter a horrifying invasion by not just zombies, but also undead animals.

You have a week to scavenge supplies and fashion a settlement to survive the onslaught.

7 Days to Die offers players an incredible mix of genres, from survival crafting to tower defense.

Building structures is well-developed, featuring skill progressions, and exploration yields rewards because you can salvage most items that aren’t securely fastened.

Despite all the great things I have to say about it, the game 7 Days to Die can be a bit clunky at times. But if you don’t mind navigating through some technical issues here and there, it’s definitely among the top-notch zombie games currently available.

8. Killing Floor 2

A Head-Banging Good Time

Killing Floor 2 shares mechanical similarities with the zombie mode in Call of Duty, but it certainly forges a unique identity by offering more than just imitation.

One of the distinctive features is a well-structured social hierarchy, composed of ten distinct roles that offer unique experiences.

There will always be a special affection within me for the Pistol Expert, who excels at landing headshots; however, there’s a role to suit every preference.

In a playful manner, zombies are affectionately called ZEDs or ‘Specimens.’ While there is no shortage of ordinary opponents to eliminate, numerous ones possess unique skills to maintain your alertness.

There’s also a trader you can interact with between rounds.

In a surprising depth, Killing Floor 2 offers more than meets the eye, but what truly seals the deal is its outstanding soundtrack, perfect for those who enjoy blasting through zombie hordes with heavy metal tunes playing in the background.

7. Call of Duty Black Ops 6

A Return To Form

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that “Call of Duty: World at War” significantly shaped the landscape of wave-based zombie games, a genre we now cherish. Ever since then, CoD enthusiasts have eagerly anticipated Treyarch’s offerings for their fix of the undead, with mostly favorable outcomes.

Black Ops 6 offers players one of the best CoD zombies experiences we’ve had in years.

Maps are created to cater to both novices and experts, ensuring that fresh, exciting mechanics enhance the gaming experience instead of diverting from it.

When it comes to horde mechanics, they are relatively simple but intense. As the game progresses, a crowd of zombies surrounds your location, with increasingly menacing hordes appearing over time.

Several types of zombies exist, yet the classic formula remains irresistible, as players continue to crave more. While multiplayer and Warzone might be experiencing some issues, Zombies will undoubtedly endure.

6. Sker Ritual

In the year 2024, Sker Ritual debuted, delivering a classic style of “Call of Duty Zombies” gameplay, in contrast to Modern Warfare 3, which ventured into an open-world gameplay format.

Sker Ritual openly shows its impact, offering a more substantial Zombies adventure that subtly references the classic Black Ops series.

Zombies assault players in a wave-based format on a great selection of varied maps.

There are easter eggs galore, but my favorite part of Sker Ritual is the map-specific stories.

Every story transports you through various locations, accomplishing tasks until you reach a confrontation with the level’s main antagonist. While it’s not required, this encounter significantly enhances the Sker Ritual experience, making it stand out from typical zombie games.

Each map also contains a ‘hidden’ story for hardcore easter egg hunters.

It’s unfortunate that many people aren’t aware of its existence, given its greatness, whether enjoyed individually or with companions.

5. World War Z

You’ve Never Seen Hordes This Big

The action-packed game, “World War Z”, offers a thrilling experience as a swarm shooter, keeping players hooked due to its engaging and repeatable skill acquisition system.

WWZ gameplay offers a solid mix of third-person action and tower defense.

The game also includes a captivating storyline that boasts an impressive range of features. It transports you to diverse locations such as bustling shopping centers and confined research facilities.

World War Z‘s most impressive feat is how many zombies it can cram onto the screen simultaneously.

I’ve rarely witnessed such vast groups sweep across the map as I have now, and it’s truly an awe-inspiring sight. Additionally, there’s a well-structured system for characters’ skills and advancements, which unfold as you make progress.

4. Dead Rising Remastered

A Capcom Classic

No Zombie game list would be complete without the legendary Dead Rising.

For the uninitiated, Dead Rising puts you in the shoes of hot-shot journalist Frank West.

You find yourself stuck in a shopping mall overrun by zombies and madmen, but even amidst this chaos, the environment tells a captivating tale.

Each day presents limitations on how much can be accomplished, so it’s essential to effectively organize your tasks if you aspire for a favorable outcome.

The dynamics of a zombie swarm might appear straightforward, but as time elapses, the undead become increasingly formidable. In the game “Dead Rising”, zombies are significantly more threatening during nighttime hours, making it crucial to strategize and prepare in advance to avoid being caught off guard.

3. Days Gone

Zombie Genocide Baked Into The Story

Many games featured in this collection provide players with wave-based or arcade-style experiences, which are engaging for sure. However, certain gamers seek out titles that offer captivating narratives as well.

If it resonates with you, you’d likely find yourself immersed in the thrilling tale of Days Gone – a bold open-world game set in a world overtaken by the undead.

In the game Days Gone, the horde mechanics, which involve large numbers of aggressive creatures known as swarmers, are a standout feature, often creating tense and frightening moments. These swarmers can be found wandering across the map at night, and occasionally even hiding in caves during the day, so get ready for some unexpected encounters!

Overcoming a large group requires both smart planning and good equipment, and you’ll find more than 30 such resources spread out throughout the area.

In the game “Days Gone,” you have the option to engage enemies on your preferred terms, yet it’s important to note that swarms are quite daunting there, as it adds to the realism of the experience.

2. Project Zomboid

Not As Braindead As You Think

In simple terms, Project Zomboid is a captivating open-world survival game where numerous features seamlessly integrate.

Among the striking aspects, it’s worth noting how zombies behave. These creatures don’t simply teleport themselves towards you; they move by walking or shambling.

In the game Project Zomboid, zombies track their prey through both sight and sound. It may appear advantageous to eliminate a solitary zombie with a firearm, but such an action might unintentionally attract more of them, as if you were calling them for dinner!

In simpler terms, if a zombie sees you, it will rush towards you, and the number of zombies chasing you often varies depending on the location. You’ll find it less challenging to avoid them in rural areas where larger groups of zombies tend to inhabit urban environments, particularly cities.

This game, Project Zomboid, is so rich in content that I could discuss it endlessly without even touching on all its aspects. The unassuming appearance of the graphics shouldn’t deceive you; beneath the surface lies a depth and complexity that will keep you engaged for hours.

1. Left 4 Dead 2

A Flesh-Eating Masterpiece

As a dedicated gamer, I’d boldly declare that no other zombie game has quite captured my heart like the thrilling Left 4 Dead 2. If you’ve got some gaming buddies to back you up, it’s an absolute must-experience!

In the game L4D2, your objective is primarily to get to the evacuation spot. However, the challenge lies in navigating through a horde of the undead that typically stands between you and security.

Zombies come in many shapes and sizes, from brutish Chargers to the horrifying Witch.

Less formidable within their group are the ‘Common Infected,’ lumbering, harmless-seeming undead individuals who present minimal danger. Yet, acting carelessly by making noise or provoking a ‘Boomer’ can cause these adversaries to become aggressive and overpowering in numbers, persistently attacking without mercy.

In harder modes, the strength of the swarm grows, but the strategy in Left 4 Dead 2 remains engaging due to the presence of effective responses, giving its gameplay a tactically satisfying feel.
