In the third installment of “100 Girlfriends” season 2, titled “Can You See the Maid?”, I found myself immersed in a whirlwind of absurdity and warmth. While the preceding episodes had their share of peculiarities, this one truly stood out and reminded me of some of the mind-boggling scenes from the first season.
Many individuals likely tune in to the show “100 Girlfriends” primarily due to its outrageous and suggestive humor. If you’re among those who enjoy such content, then this specific episode is tailored for you. It offers a range of unusual elements, including drugs transforming people into infants, visually impaired maids, and even references to “Death Note“. In essence, this episode is packed with an assortment of intriguing elements.
The Baby Bit
… It Was Weird
In this exhilarating episode kickoff of season 2, I can’t help but exclaim that the opening scene takes the cake as the wildest yet! You see, our protagonist Hahari, with a peculiar longing to revisit her infantile years (to phrase it delicately), persuaded Kusuri to concoct a potion capable of transforming adults into infants. Fast forward through the twists and turns, an unfortunate mishap transpires, and lo and behold, Hahari herself is reduced to baby form, leaving only Hakari and Rentarou unchanged in their adult forms. Quite a rollercoaster ride, wouldn’t you agree?
In this part, some jokes and scenes might be so bold that they could lead to lesser shows being shut down, but surprisingly, “100 Girlfriends” persists. It’s not necessarily that all the humor is inappropriate for workplaces, but there’s a lot of it involving babies getting into risky situations and Rentarou and Hakari having to maintain control over them.
Hakari Grows Closer to Her Mom
Throughout most of the initial part, the episode centers around infantile jokes and Hakari’s continuous struggles. However, in the concluding moments, they attempted to impart an optimistic lesson. Initially, Hakari and Hahari had a disagreement due to Hakari feeling disturbed by her mother’s unruly behavior towards them. Eventually, after looking after the baby-like sisters, Hakari comprehended the immense effort required in child-rearing, which led her to value her mother more, who was herself a teenager when Hakari was born.
Regardless of any differences or changes in your behavior, you will forever remain my mother. You are the very same mother whom I adore and hold in high regard. (Hakari speaking to Hahari)
Girlfriend #8: Mei Meido
Loyal, Blind, and Possibly Blindly Loyal
In the anime “100 Girlfriends”, the character Mei Meido is introduced as Rentarou’s eighth girlfriend. She made a brief appearance in season 1, episode 11, titled “Even If It Kills Me”. However, her main debut was in episode 12, “The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You (94 to Go)”. In this show, Mei is a maid from the Hanazono family, and she can be seen serving drinks and snacks on the school rooftop to Rentarou and his girlfriends in this episode.
In their conversation about their eye colors, Hahari mentioned Mei, describing her as having stunning rainbow-hued eyes. Intrigued, they requested her to reveal them since, prior to this moment, Mei had always kept her eyes closed, a common trait of refined anime characters. To everyone’s surprise, it was discovered that Mei had grown accustomed to keeping her eyes shut and could no longer open them. The rest of the episode revolves around the group trying to coax Mei into opening her eyes. Although the plot sounds incredibly preposterous, it is remarkably engaging.
Mei’s Personality
Through their attempts to force open Mei’s eyes, the scene unveils some of the characteristics that drive this maid. It appears that Mei’s life revolves heavily around her loyalty towards the Hanazono family, particularly Hahari. In an unexpected move, she proposed cutting off her own eyelids merely to comply with Hahari’s instruction. Later, she expressed a willingness to use Kusuri’s face-altering potion if Hahari gave the order. Remarkably, it was only Mei’s disbelief that she could have insulted her master by laughing at a story where Hahari made an error that eventually caused her to open her eyes.
Despite many aspects of Mei being unclear, the series hasn’t delved into why she remains devoted to the Hanazono family. The latest installment concludes on a suspenseful note as Mei expresses her affection for Rentarou, hinting that the forthcoming episode will primarily focus on her. Fingers crossed that the next chapter provides some insight into Mei’s past.
In the same vein as other girlfriends, Mei’s name is cleverly punny to aid recall. However, what sets Meido apart is that her last name, “Meido,” translates to “Maid” when pronounced with a Japanese accent, making it easily understood by non-Japanese audiences as well. To add to the cleverness, her birthday, May 10th, offers another pun. In Japanese, one way to say ten is “do,” which aligns with “May-do,” another term for ‘maid.’
You can now stream the series ‘100 Girlfriends’ on Crunchyroll. Mark your calendars for February 2, 2025, at 6:00 AM Pacific Time, as that’s when episode 4 of season 2 will be released.
