11 Best 3D Metroidvanias You Need to Play

If you’re familiar with the Metroidvania genre, you’ll notice that most of its games are designed to be played from a two-dimensional viewpoint. This is because early games like Castlevania and Metroid established the genre while being played in a 2D environment, which makes perfect sense.

From my perspective as an avid fan, it’s not mandatory for every Metroidvania to incorporate 2D platformer mechanics. In essence, the defining characteristics of this genre lie in its structured progression and the interconnected world design. This structure involves progress being gated by items, which encourages both exploration and revisiting previously explored areas.

In other words, a detailed map that could confound even the most skilled mapmaker is almost indispensable.

Here’s another way:
A complex map challenging even the expert cartographer is nearly vital.

A map so intricate it leaves even the best mapmakers puzzled is almost a must-have.

Let me clarify, we’re planning to demonstrate how games created from a three-dimensional viewpoint can offer authentic Metroidvania gaming experiences.

11. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

What A Legacy

As a die-hard Blood Omen enthusiast, it’s no exaggeration to say that I am what I am – but even for a connoisseur of all things vampiric, the recent remastering of the timeless classic, Soul Reaver, is nothing short of genius.

Though some might contend that this game’s title evokes a similar atmosphere to that of the Zelda series, often associated with 3D metroidvanias, I personally think it manages to just about qualify for conversation within the realm of 3D Metroidvania games.

In a connected global landscape, players often retrace their steps to collect new power-ups, which can lead to feelings of disorientation as they explore the interwoven world of a Metroidvania game.

Players frequently go back to places they’ve been before in a Metroidvania game to get new power-ups, which can make it hard to keep track of where you are.

In this game, while some parts can technically be skipped if you prefer a strictly linear experience, exploring more will reveal additional ‘Metroidvania-style’ elements. There are many hidden depths to discover if you’re willing to delve deeper.

10. Shadowman: Remastered

Voodoo Mama Juju

Instead of dwelling on the present or future, it’s worthwhile to occasionally reminisce about the past and rediscover some lesser-known treasures from times long past, and when it comes to 3D Metroidvania games, Shadowman is definitely one such hidden gem.

In contrast to the thrilling games like Tomb Raider, Castlevania, and Dino Crisis that were popular during the Dreamcast period, this game, although based on the well-known Shadowman comic book, didn’t quite measure up in terms of action-packed gameplay.

Due to the remastering process, players now have the opportunity to experience a refined edition of this 3D Metroidvania treasure, which boasts a moody, rugged environment, captivating voodoo-influenced gameplay dynamics, and a semi-linear structure that allows for flexible progression choices.

Despite the awkwardness in the battle and movement mechanics, this zombie-like character with a Vin Diesel-esque appearance is full of charm if you can look past those initial difficulties.

9. Powerslave Exhumed

Rip And… Explore

Delving into the remnants of long-forgotten video games, we find a PlayStation 1 action game that is a classic in its genre. This title not only boasts the thrilling gameplay associated with ‘boomer-shooters’, but it also incorporates enough Metroidvania aspects to be included on our list.

This game shares a similar style with classics such as DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein, and Duke Nukem from the same era. However, what makes it unique among these legendary shooters is its distinct approach to character progression.

In this game, it’s not simply about blindly slaughtering demons to move onto the next room. Instead, you’ll have to gather items, retrace your steps, and explore an expansive world filled with fresh locations to discover.

Instead of being just mindless, explosive action like a typical boomershooter game, it offers strategic, coherent level design, resulting in a more sophisticated and immersive Rip-and-Tear gaming experience.

8. Castlevania: Curse of Darkness

A Legacy Pick

Although many might anticipate discussing the Lords of Shadow, it should be noted that, while it’s a decent game, it doesn’t particularly shine in terms of Metroidvania elements because of its linear gameplay structure.

Just like with Curse of Darkness, let me clarify our choice to feature this game. Firstly, it stands out among other 3D Castlevanias due to its captivating narrative, thrilling combat, and intriguing ID system. Secondly, we hold a soft spot for it despite the somewhat challenging Metroidvania aspects.

The layout of the levels seems subpar, as there are vast open areas overflowing with adversaries, creating an unwanted sense of bloat. This can make exploring feel more like a burden than an enjoyable experience.

If you manage to navigate those parts, the rest is exceptional and provides a classic example of effective resume content.

7. Hob

An Isometric Icon

As a gamer on the hunt for an experience that seamlessly merges the essence of Zelda-style adventure with the intricate world-exploration of a 3D Metroidvania, look no further! The game I’m referring to, Hob, offers a beautifully balanced fusion that will surely satisfy your gaming cravings.

The game’s battle system and overall structure closely resemble that of the Zelda series, featuring a top-down, action-oriented combat style that offers an intuitive and smooth gaming experience.

In terms of world structure, it follows the blueprint often seen in games like Metroidvania, where players are dropped into an environment without much initial guidance about the context, instead needing to navigate, mark their path, and gradually understand their surroundings on their own exploration.

As you unlock additional blueprints for your glove, you will gain access to previously unexplored regions, where you can find hidden treasures, shortcuts, and much more.

This game is a visually stunning, lively, and tragically underappreciated 3D Metroidvania that’s definitely worth your focus and consideration.

6. Lunacid

A Dark Souls Demake

Let’s discuss something else first to get us warmed up. How about a first-person indie game that resembles Dark Souls to spark your excitement for the larger project from FromSoftware?

As a gamer, I’d describe Lunacid as a raw, fantasy-themed demake by the creators of the chilling horror game Lost in Vivo. Instead of exploring above ground like most games, you dive deep underground via the Deep Well. Solving intricate environmental puzzles, navigating this interconnected underworld, and negotiating with a cunning crow could be your ticket to staying alive and succeeding in this challenging adventure.

The fight feels deliberately challenging, similar to playing Elden Ring on the N64. Yet, this difficulty enhances its appeal, and the universe is captivating, filled with numerous mysteries waiting to be discovered. Unraveling these secrets will grant you access to hidden regions, offering more opportunities for exploration.

If you were a fan of King’s Field in the past, then this new one is definitely worth your time. Make sure to give it a look!

5. Dark Souls

You Died

Let’s shift our focus to the game that is widely recognized as launching the Souls series we appreciate so much now. Although some may argue about its 3D Metroidvania classification, I personally do not share that viewpoint.

Because of its remarkably well-crafted game world filled with puzzles, boss challenges, and shortcuts. Additionally, there’s an abundance of items and abilities players must acquire to access certain zones, and it’s evidently overflowing with elements inspired by the Metroidvania genre.

Combine this with the understanding that the game delivers an extremely skill-based, challenging, and gratifying role-playing experience, and you’re looking at a game that belongs on every gamer’s must-play list.

If you’re interested in understanding how FromSoftware came to rule the action RPG genre, playing this slightly old-fashioned game might offer some insights as a beginner.

4. Batman Arkham Asylum

It’s Da Bat!

As I delved into the captivating world of the Batman Trilogy, it wasn’t just the iconic combo-based combat that kept me hooked – action and superhero games wouldn’t be the same without it. Yet, it was easy to overlook at the heat of the moment as I dished out punches to henchmen, but this trilogy was essentially a Metroidvania game in its essence.

By obtaining either Explosive Gel or a Line Launcher, these bat-gadgets enable you to reach hitherto unreachable spots within the labyrinthine world of Gotham’s infamous asylum for the mentally disturbed, thereby expanding its intricate network.

Moreover, these tools serve dual purposes: facilitating easier movement by revealing shortcuts, and functioning as essential weapons against the tough enemies who pose a threat to you.

You might find a seamless gameplay structure that combines exploration and progression, similar to what you’d experience in a Metroidvania, but with an added dash of style inspired by DC Comics, as well as top-tier visual and technical quality.

3. Metroid Prime 2

A Prime Candidate

metroid-prime-2_-echoes-in-game-screenshot-2.jpg

To be honest, I found myself struggling to choose between the original Metroid Prime and its outstanding sequel. However, after much thought, I believe that the sequel provides the most authentic Metroid Prime experience – for now, until possibly a fourth installment arrives.

This transformation elevates the concept of converting Super Metroid into a 3D game to new heights, by enhancing virtually everything, from incredible power-ups, a larger, diverse environment to traverse, to a richer and deeper backstory to discover.

Moreover, Prime 2 doesn’t shy away from increasing the challenge, making it a tougher play for seasoned Metroid gamers.

I acknowledge that nothing can surpass the Sanctuary Fortress in the original game, but when it comes to overall quality, Metroid Prime 2 takes the lead hands down. As for Metroid Prime 3, let’s just say it’s best not to discuss it.

2. Supraland

A Solo-Developed Gem

According to its description, this game combines elements similar to those found in Portal, Zelda, and Metroid, and I completely concur with that assessment.

Although the vibrant artwork may lead you to believe that Supraland is purely a children’s game, it quickly becomes clear that this notion is misleading once you encounter one of its intricately crafted puzzles and find yourself at a loss for how to solve it.

This game requires you to maintain numerous mental notes about different elements to revisit later, effectively challenging players to think creatively. Similarly to many Metroidvania games, defeating the final boss doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve reached the end of the game.

The main drawback is the somewhat simplistic combat system, but with its vast world, intriguing puzzles, and abundance of content, it’s just a minor flaw in an otherwise exceptional 3D Metroidvania game.

1. Pseudoregalia

Do A Flip!

Amongst exceptional 3D Metroidvania games, there’s an ideal method to make the perfect finish, and that’s by bestowing the independent masterpiece, Pseudoregalia, with well-deserved recognition.

At heart, this game is a 3D platformer. Players begin their journey in a mysterious world, and as they venture deeper, they encounter boss battles, uncover hidden areas, and leap through levels to earn upgrades.

Here’s my take: As a dedicated player, I can’t stress enough that investing in these enhancements is key to gradually unveiling and ultimately dominating the remarkable movement mechanics hidden within this game.

The title offers an immersive experience where players can achieve a parkour flow state by wall-running, performing gainer backflips, and soaring to their next location with the agility of a falcon.

Although it might not be visually appealing at first, and its controls can seem tricky, this game offers an incredibly satisfying Metroidvania experience that is unique and worth giving a shot.
