The new game, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflections, is now available! It’s a complex adventure with lots of monsters, gameplay features, and systems to learn. If you want to get started on the right foot, here are 12 helpful tips for Monster Hunter Stories 3.
12 Use Throwing Knives Against Barrel Felynes

In Monster Hunter Stories 3, defeating Barrel Felynes earns you experience points, making them valuable targets. However, they’re protected by surrounding barrels that significantly boost their defense. While Barrel Bombs are effective against these barrels, throwing knives are a great substitute if you don’t have any. Throwing knives deal a set amount of damage, allowing you to quickly break the barrels and defeat the Barrel Felynes.
11 Stack Attack Buffs During Combat

Okay, so one of the biggest things I’ve learned in this game is to really focus on stacking buffs whenever I’m fighting. Like, the Pink Rathian Egg Skill, Fireform? That thing is amazing because it boosts everyone’s attack, and the more you use it, the stronger the boost gets – it’s a little hidden bonus a lot of people don’t know about! In Monster Hunter, those attack boosts actually get better and better – small, then medium, then large – so it really pays off to keep them going.
The more you use Fireform, the stronger its buff becomes – starting small and growing to a noticeable increase. In combat, consistently reapply this attack buff, or any others you’re using to improve your abilities, to keep those benefits active for as long as possible.
10 Switch Weapons

In Monster Hunter Stories 3, weapons keep their charge level even if you switch to a different one during battle. For example, if you’ve been building up a charge with a Meteor Hammer and then switch to a Hydra Tornaria, that charge will still be there. This is really useful in long fights, letting you charge one weapon and then switch to it at the right moment for a big attack.
9 Understand Head-to-Head

Head-to-head attacks happen when you and a monster both attack each other at the same time. They can be a little hard to notice when you’re first learning the game. Look for a yellow line connecting the monster to your character – that’s a sign they’re using a basic attack (power, speed, or technical) and you can start a head-to-head battle.
8 Don’t Use Synchro Rush in Certain Situations

After knocking down a monster, you can use a powerful attack called Synchro Rush. This attack deals a lot of damage and builds up your Kinship gauge. If you choose not to use Synchro Rush, the monster will stay down, giving you an extra turn while it recovers.
For a short time, all your attacks will automatically hit with maximum damage, making it easy to defeat the monster quickly.
7 Elder Dragons Can Appear at Night

Elder Dragons are the strongest and most challenging creatures in the game, but they aren’t always easy to locate. We’ve found they typically appear every other night. If you’re having trouble finding one, like Namielle, just keep playing at night until the dragon’s special scene begins.
If you’re still unable to locate them, wait until the next night and keep battling until an Elder Dragon appears.
6 Elder Dragons Can Drop Items

Elder Dragons are really tough opponents in Monster Hunter Stories 3, especially for new players. But don’t avoid them! Even if you’re defeated, you still have a chance to earn valuable items. For example, if you lose to Namielle, you might get a Namielle Hide, which can be used to make weapons and armor early in the game.
5 You Can Hide Headgear

In Monster Hunter Stories 3, armor is really important for reducing damage and giving you an advantage in fights. But it can cover up your character’s face, which is a shame if you’ve spent time customizing their appearance. Luckily, you can easily hide the helmet or headpiece.
Okay, so I figured out how to hide my helmet! It’s super easy. You just go to the main menu, and under your character, there’s an option that says “Change Equipment.” Click that, and then look in the bottom-left corner of the screen for “Display Headgear” – just turn that off. It’s a little trick, but it really changes how my character looks!
4 Change Battle Ally Strategies

Did you know you can customize how your battle allies behave? You can change their strategies by selecting the “Change Battle Allies” option in the menu, then choosing “Strategies” at the top-left of the screen. This lets you tell them to focus on the same enemy as you, switch to a different target, or act in a way that fits how you like to play. You won’t directly control your allies, but you can influence what they do with these settings.
3 Make Sure to Complete Side Stories

In Monster Hunter Stories 3, don’t skip the side quests! They’re really valuable because they unlock essential crafting recipes, strengthen your monster companions, and even let your characters learn new weapon skills and elemental attacks. This allows you to customize your team to handle different enemy types more effectively, making them more versatile and powerful. Putting in the effort to finish these side stories is definitely worthwhile.
2 Collecting Monster Eggs

In Monster Hunter Stories 3, you’ll occasionally find dens with two eggs inside. A little-known trick is that you can collect both eggs without returning to base first! Usually, you can only carry one heavy item at a time, but this lets you quickly grab both eggs from different nests before heading out.
1 Make the Most of Both Day and Night Exploration

You can explore the game world at any time of day or night, and each period offers unique advantages. Daytime is ideal for battling weaker monsters, making it easier to gather resources, particularly if your character isn’t at the recommended level. You can also take on side quests and search for monster dens in Monster Hunter Stories 3.
Monsters are harder to defeat and drop better items at night. Taking advantage of nighttime exploration can help you gather the materials needed to create powerful weapons and armor. It’s a good idea to explore at both day and night to get the most out of your adventures.
