Netflix offers a wide variety of shonen anime, and it’s become incredibly popular with its viewers. In fact, Netflix reported that half of its subscribers watch anime as of July 2025, making it a major success for the platform. As a result, Netflix features many of the most popular and well-regarded shonen series available.
As a huge shonen anime fan, I’ve put together a list of what I think are the absolute must-watch series on Netflix right now. It’s a great mix – you’ll find some of the newest hits alongside older classics that honestly still hold up incredibly well. If you’re getting into the genre, or just want to revisit some favorites, this is where to start!
Jujutsu Kaisen
Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most popular anime series to emerge recently. This action-packed shonen anime delivers everything fans of the genre want – and it looks fantastic. Each season is filled with thrilling fights, suspense, and genuinely moving scenes, making it a series well worth checking out.
I’ve been watching this series, and it’s really grabbed me. The whole world is built around this idea of ‘Cursed Energy,’ which basically comes from people’s negative feelings. So, naturally, there are monsters born from that, but also people – Jujutsu Sorcerers – who fight against them. The main character, Yuji Itadori, gets pulled into all of this when he accidentally consumes a cursed object, and suddenly his life is completely turned upside down. The story itself is really well done, and the way it unfolds is incredibly compelling, especially the fight scenes – there’s a ton of action. I’d definitely recommend checking it out.
One Piece
Everyone knows One Piece is amazing. While Netflix doesn’t have every episode, there are still plenty available to keep you entertained for weeks. It’s a true anime classic that any fan should experience.
If you’re familiar with the live-action series but haven’t watched the original anime, we highly recommend checking it out. From the beginning, you’ll be swept away by a world full of adventure, comedy, exciting fights, and memorable characters. After a few seasons, you’ll quickly see why One Piece is such a beloved and long-running anime – and why it continues to be popular today.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Frieren isn’t like most action-packed shonen anime; it focuses more on characters’ feelings, emotions, and spiritual themes. Despite this, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is still considered a fantasy shonen. The anime delivers everything fans love about the genre – a rich medieval fantasy setting, compelling characters, exciting action, and a captivating story.
The story follows Frieren, an elf mage and one of the heroes who defeated the Demon King and saved the world. Though fifty years have passed since their victory, Frieren appears unchanged, unlike her human companions who have aged – and one has sadly passed away. Realizing this, Frieren sets out on a journey hoping for one last conversation with her lost friend. Along the way, she begins to understand the impact she had on those she cared about and the true value of the time they all shared.
Death Note
Death Note, the anime adapted from Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s popular manga, is a bit different from most action-focused anime. Despite not immediately seeming like one, it’s consistently considered a shonen anime in Japan. Fortunately, you can stream it on Netflix. While the anime doesn’t quite match the manga’s level of quality, it’s still a worthwhile watch.

Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku
Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is a new anime quickly gaining popularity. It’s known for its dark, violent, and intense action, making it a gripping choice for viewers who enjoy thrilling combat and a dangerous world.
I’m totally hooked on this story! It centers around Gabimaru, a ninja who’s basically waiting to die after getting captured. But here’s the crazy part – nobody can actually kill him! Because of his incredible resilience and his past as an assassin, he gets a second chance: he’s chosen to join a team sent to this unbelievably dangerous island. It’s full of other assassins, and he has to make it back alive. There’s just one catch – he’s constantly watched by an officer, and if she goes down, he fails the mission. It’s a really tense setup!
My Hero Academia
While anime has featured superheroes for years, My Hero Academia is responsible for their current widespread popularity. Even anime versions of Marvel comics haven’t reached this level of global success. My Hero Academia stands out because it draws viewers into a compelling story about young people learning to become heroes.
The characters in My Hero Academia have become incredibly popular in the anime world, facing constant challenges and developing amazing abilities. The story starts with Deku, who is born without any powers and believes his dream of becoming a hero is impossible. However, meeting his hero, All Might, changes everything, giving Deku powers and the chance to train. This sets the stage for an epic journey.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
It’s rare for a manga to get two complete anime adaptations so close together. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is considered the most accurate adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa’s original story, as it was made after the manga was finished. The first anime series, however, had to invent its own plot points because the author was still writing the manga while it was airing.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is widely considered one of the greatest shonen anime ever made, captivating viewers with its thrilling story, emotional depth, and complex themes. The series follows two brothers who attempt to use alchemy to bring their mother back to life, but the experiment goes horribly wrong. One brother loses an arm, while the other’s entire body is destroyed, forcing his soul into a suit of armor. As they struggle with the consequences of their actions, they uncover a much larger and more intricate destiny than they ever anticipated.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
I remember when Demon Slayer really took off – it felt like everyone, not just in Japan but worldwide, suddenly wanted to get into anime. The story, with its demons and samurai, was captivating, and it kept you guessing at every turn. It genuinely felt like it changed the game for shonen anime, and played a huge role in bringing the genre back into the spotlight.

Tanjiro Kamado’s story has everything you’d expect from a great action anime. He starts as a kind boy focused on his family, but tragedy strikes when they’re killed and his sister is turned into a demon. This forces him to become a Demon Slayer, training with a special organization dedicated to fighting demons. Driven by a desire for revenge and a hope to save his sister, Tanjiro embarks on a dangerous journey. The bond between siblings is central to the story, and the anime also features incredible sword fights and magical battles.
Gintama
Many Western viewers overlook Gintama, but it’s a truly significant shonen anime from its era and deserves more recognition. The show cleverly blends a historical Edo period setting with futuristic technology, but what really stands out is its incredibly unique and hilarious sense of humor.
This anime is genuinely funny, filled with jokes and lots of references to popular series like Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon. Gintama is a hilarious, action-packed show with a uniquely Japanese style of comedy. The main character, Gintoki, used to be a legendary samurai, but now he’s more focused on his health. He’s surrounded by a cast of quirky and lovable characters that viewers will quickly enjoy. It’s a surprisingly good shonen anime that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.
Sakamoto Days
Among recent popular action manga published in Jump, Sakamoto Days really stands out. Although the animation isn’t always perfect, the series is funny and engaging, making the visuals less of a concern.
The story follows a retired hitman who’s trying to live a quiet life managing a convenience store. He’s gained weight, but is still surprisingly fast and dangerous. Now, the criminal organization he used to work for has found him and wants him eliminated, sending their top assassins to do the job. However, taking him down will be much harder than they expect.
