2009 Game Featuring Ozzy Osbourne is Free, But You Have to Act Fast

To pay tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne, Double Fine has made their cult-hit game, Brutal Legend, available for free on Itch.io for 666 minutes. First released in 2009, Brutal Legend features non-player characters based on real heavy metal musicians, including Osbourne himself. This game is known as one of Double Fine’s most eccentric releases due to its unique blend of gameplay mechanics from diverse genres.

On July 22nd, Ozzy Osbourne, famously known as “Ozzy,” passed away at the age of 76. This occurred just two weeks after he reunited with Black Sabbath for a charity concert titled “Back to the Beginning” in Birmingham, England. Throughout his career with Black Sabbath and as a solo artist, Ozzy was widely recognized as one of the greatest heavy metal musicians and vocalists of all time. Hits such as “Crazy Train,” “Bark At The Moon,” “Iron Man,” and “Paranoid” became staples in many music fans’ playlists. In his later years, Ozzy and his family gained significant fame through the MTV show “The Osbournes“. Additionally, he was featured in advertisements for games like “World of Warcraft“.

Following the demise of Osbourne, Double Fine honored the deceased heavy metal legend by offering fans a brief window to obtain one of their games at no cost. On social media, Double Fine announced that for 666 minutes, _Brutal Legend_ would be free, ending at 6:06 AM Eastern on July 24. This offer was available for Windows, macOS, and Linux users via itch.io. After signing up or logging into a free itch.io account, users could download a 7.6 GB ZIP file containing _Brutal Legend_, without any digital rights management (DRM). First released as an exclusive console game four years ago, the PC port of _Brutal Legend_ was launched in 2013, featuring enhancements such as anti-aliasing and extended render distances. As revealed by Double Fine director Tim Schaefer, _Brutal Legend_ was influenced by his personal musical background, and it takes place in a fanciful world reminiscent of heavy metal album cover artwork from various decades.

Brutal Legend Is Free On Itch.io For 666 Minutes

To honor Ozzy’s larger-than-life rock and roll legacy, we’re making Brütal Legend *FREE* on itch.io: doublefine.itch.io/brutal-legend But this incredible deal will only last for 666 minutes, as the prophecy foretold. So get yourself clicking, before it disappears like a demon in the night… 🤘 🖤 — Double Fine (@doublefine.com) 2025-07-23T23:00:14.234Z

In the game Brutal Legend, there’s a character named The Guardian of Metal, voiced and modeled after Ozzy Osbourne. This character is distinguished by his tinted sunglasses, dark attire, and an array of jewelry. The Guardian of Metal assists the main character, Eddie Riggs, in Brutal Legend, providing enhancements for his Seperator axe and his guitar named Clementine (Flying V). Due to its unique combination of open-world adventure, real-time strategy gameplay, and musical elements similar to those found in games like Guitar Hero, Brutal Legend is often regarded as one of Double Fine’s most unusual releases.

Currently, enthusiasts of “Brutal Legend” have approximately 9 hours left before they can include the 2009 Double Fine production in their itch.io libraries. Given that Double Fine is occupied with projects such as “Keeper”, we’ll have to wait and see what the studio intends to do after 2025.
